When I used to hear that a K-POP singer was appearing in a game, I tended to have the same reaction every time.
I assumed it would follow the usual pattern: turn a famous face into a character, sell a few items with their name attached, and then let it all quietly disappear once the event was over. That might be exciting for people who already liked the singer, but for longtime players, it often felt more like a brief attraction than something that would actually stay with the game.
The collaboration that changed my mind was MapleStory X BTS.
Even when I first heard about it, I was not especially excited. But when I watched the video they released, it did not feel like the members were simply reading prepared lines. They talked about their memories of MapleStory, and the video showed them actively thinking through the styling items that would eventually be added to the game.
In 2020, MapleStory introduced items designed directly by the BTS members, with hats, weapons, chairs, and other pieces released in the Cash Shop. The lineup included “Light of the World Tree,” “HOPE,” “Mikrokosmos,” “Wongki-hyung on a Hobby Horse,” “V Mask,” “Time Spent with Maple,” and “ARMY Bomb,” and even the names alone gave a clear sense that each item reflected a different idea. Before the black set, Wongki-hyung on a Hobby Horse caught my eye first
When I first looked through the collaboration items, what stayed with me most was not the polished outfit set.
It was the item called “Wongki-hyung on a Hobby Horse.”
When I heard it was a K-POP collaboration, I expected elegant, stylish designs along the lines of stage outfits. Instead, there was this playful detail mixed in—something any MapleStory player would recognize immediately.
That was the moment the event began to feel a little different.
It did not seem like they had simply borrowed a singer’s name and attached it to merchandise. It felt as though they had actually thought about what would be fun to use inside MapleStory. Names like “Time Spent with Maple” also fit naturally with the memories of people who had played the game for a long time.
I was not the kind of fan who followed every BTS activity without fail. Even so, after watching that video, I found myself curious about which member had suggested which idea.
In that sense, the game made me look at the singers differently, and the singers made me take another look at a styling feature I would normally have passed by.

In the end, I spent more time in the styling window than in combat
At the time, my character was dressed almost entirely around function.
The equipment visuals did not really match, and even the clothes I had picked up from events were just filling empty slots. It did not bother me much while hunting, but once I started previewing the collaboration items one by one, my usual look suddenly felt awkward.
At first, I thought I would just equip a full set of BTS items.
But when I changed the hat, it did not match the hairstyle, and when I equipped the weapon, my old cape stood out far too much. In the end, I pulled every outfit piece I had stored away out of the warehouse and compared them one part at a time.
I only hunted for about twenty minutes, but I spent well over an hour in the styling window.
That was when something became clear to me.
If a game collaboration is going to remain memorable, what matters is not a background you can only see during the event period, but an item players can keep on their own characters afterward.
Music and videos have to be looked up again once the event is over, but styling items bring those memories back every time you see your character.
My friends’ reactions were different from the usual collaborations as well
The reactions from my friends who played MapleStory were interesting too.
One friend who liked BTS barely played the game, but still wanted to know what the items looked like. On the other hand, another friend who did not really know BTS songs looked at the hats and weapons designed by the members and started asking which ideas felt the most like Maple.
Not everyone liked the same things.
Some picked items with very obvious symbolism, like the ARMY Bomb, while others looked for pieces that would be easy to mix into their usual Maple styling. I personally remembered the slightly oddball items more than the finished sets.
Because people’s tastes split in different directions, the conversation actually lasted longer.
If it had been the kind of collaboration that ended with everyone saying, “That looks cool,” I probably would have forgotten it a few days later. But each item gave us something to talk about—“Who do you think came up with this?”—and that made even browsing the Cash Shop feel like part of the content.

Jin and MapleStory meeting again a few years later
Another thing that impressed me was that this collaboration did not simply end as a one-time event.
In 2026, MapleStory also presented “Office Warrior Kim Seokjin Returns” with BTS Jin, and the related content continued from March through May. In-game, “Jin’s Mysterious Garden” ran from March 23 to May 13. ([MapleStory] July 2026 Update)
Even though quite a few years had passed since I first saw the collaboration, it did not feel like an awkward reunion.
That was because, by then, there was already a sense that he genuinely liked MapleStory. Rather than someone suddenly appearing to promote a new product, it felt closer to an old player dropping by again.
Of course, not every event was perfect.
The “Amazing Hot Time” event in April 2026 also drew disappointed responses on the official event board over some of its participation methods and player limits. It showed that even if people are happy to see the collaboration figure, the overall response can change if the actual room for players to participate is too limited. ([MapleStory] July 2026 Update)
Giving something a good name and making it genuinely enjoyable for players turned out to be two different issues.
Four ways I enjoyed the collaboration without regrets
First, I did not buy everything at once.
Once the word “collaboration” makes you feel hurried, it becomes easy to want even the items you would never normally use. I picked the single piece I liked most first, then tried combining it with things I already owned at least three times. I only decided to buy it once I had a look I could realistically imagine using often.
Second, I checked the sale end time first.
The 2020 BTS items were sold from December 17 until the morning of January 21 the following year. If I had only remembered it as “sometime in mid-January,” it would have been easy to miss the final day. With limited-time items, it feels safer to note the exact end time rather than just the start date. ([MapleStory] July 2026 Update)
Third, I watched the making video before buying the items.
If you only look at the items themselves, they can seem like simple hats or weapons. But once I understood how the ideas had taken shape, they felt different. The item I chose after learning who came up with it and what they were thinking stayed with me longer.
Fourth, I did not take screenshots only on the event map.
Collaboration backgrounds can be flashy, but sometimes the text and decorations stand out more than the character. I tried taking screenshots both in bright places like Henesys and in darker hunting maps. Even with the same outfit, the colors looked noticeably different depending on the background.

A collaboration where taste remained more than the singer’s face
The reason I chose MapleStory X BTS as the most memorable K-POP game collaboration was not simply its fame.
Even without placing the singer’s actual face directly into the game, I could still feel the taste of the people involved through the names and designs of the items.
Players who liked BTS could dress their Maple characters in familiar symbols, while longtime Maple players had a reason to try styling they might not otherwise have considered. Instead of one fanbase simply watching the other’s culture from the outside, both sides could talk about the same items from different perspectives.
That was especially important for someone like me, who did not know K-POP in much depth.
I did not need to study the songs or the members in advance, because the items were interesting on their own, and once I saw how they had been made, I naturally became curious about the members who had participated.
I do not think a good game collaboration ends with placing a celebrity inside the game.
Even after the event is over, something has to remain in the player’s character and in their memory.
For me, more than any flashy stage video, the moment that lasted was the one when I first saw “Wongki-hyung on a Hobby Horse” in the Cash Shop and laughed.
When you choose K-POP collaboration items, do you prefer something that symbolizes the artist, or something that fits naturally into the game?
