Back when I used to play KartRider with friends at the PC bang, the measure of being good at the game was simple.
If you knew a shortcut nobody else knew, used your boost well at the last corner, or dodged a water fly right before the finish line, you were the hero of the day.
I was never especially gifted at driving games. I often mistimed my drifts and hit the wall, and even in Speed Mode, I would lead for most of the race only to lose my place in the final stretch.
Even so, I kept coming back to KartRider.
Each match was short, and even when I lost, the reason was easy to see right away. I had taken a corner too wide, used my boost where I did not need to, or run straight into a water bomb a friend had thrown.
Without any complicated explanation, I could just queue up and try again in the very next race.
If I had to recommend one game from among Nexon’s long-running series, I would choose the KartRider series.
The first thing that comes to mind is an old PC bang keyboard
When I first played the older KartRider, memorizing track names came before worrying about gear or rank.
When a friend said, “Stick to the inside here,” I followed along without really knowing why. If I got through cleanly, my position would suddenly jump, and if I clipped the wall, everyone behind me would pass at once.
What I remember most, though, are those moments when we held onto our items right up to the finish line.
One time, a friend in front thought the win was safe, got hit by a missile, and in that brief opening I slipped past to take first. My friend said it was just luck, and I insisted it was skill because I had saved my item until the end.
We kept arguing about it long after the race was over.
That is why I remember KartRider less as a simple racing game and more as a place where I spent time with friends.
Since domestic service for the original PC KartRider ended in March 2023, you cannot start that exact version of the game now with a new account. (NEXON PC방)
Drift felt like seeing a familiar game on a new screen
Later, when I first saw KartRider: Drift, even the screen itself felt unfamiliar.
The karts and backgrounds were far sharper, and even the familiar characters looked like newly rebuilt models. It felt close to the KartRider I remembered, but the controls were something I had to learn again.
For the first few races, I made even more mistakes because I was too confident in a game I thought I already knew.
I went into corners on old instinct and hit the wall, or let go of a drift too early and watched the kart slide wide. A friend standing next to me asked, “I thought you said you were good at this back then?” and I had nothing to say.
Even so, what made it fun was the feeling of my hands slowly remembering again.
After a few laps, I began to remember where I needed to turn. More than learning a completely new game, it felt like getting back on a bicycle I had not ridden in a long time.
Still, KartRider: Drift also ended service on October 16, 2025. Rather than recommending it now as a starting point, it feels more accurate to remember it as the game where the KartRider series tried to change in a new direction. (카트라이더)

If I were starting now, I would choose Rush+
If someone were coming to the KartRider series for the first time now, I would recommend KartRider Rush+ first.
You can start right away on your phone, and it is well suited to playing just a race or two at a time. It is also an easy way to get a feel for KartRider’s distinct characters and the atmosphere of Item Mode.
As of July 2026, KartRider Rush+ is still in service, with Season 40 content being announced. (Nexon Community)
I also assumed at first that mobile controls would feel frustrating.
I was so used to steering with a keyboard that tapping buttons on a screen felt awkward. If my finger slipped even a little, I would take a corner too wide, and sometimes I missed the moment when I needed to end a drift.
But after a few days, I started to notice the conveniences that were unique to mobile.
Because I did not need to turn on a computer, I could play a single race whenever I had a little time. Even without some long progression plan, it was enough to shave a little off my track record or play a few Item Mode matches with friends.
In practice, though, I was never very good at keeping my promise to play just one race and stop.
If I lost, I wanted revenge right away, and if I won, I wanted to keep going until the streak finally ended.

If you are new to the series, it is better not to chase only fast karts from the start
On the surface, the KartRider series looks simple.
But getting a faster kart never meant my times improved right away. If I did not know the track, the more speed I had, the harder I crashed into the walls.
When I was starting out, what mattered more than kart performance was learning the corners and shortcuts on the tracks I would run often. After repeating the same track a few times, I could gradually see where I needed to slow down and where it made sense to use boost.
Second, it is better to think of Speed Mode and Item Mode as separate things.
Speed Mode was all about cutting down mistakes and learning clean racing lines. Item Mode, on the other hand, made item timing and team movement matter more than simply driving well on your own.
If rankings feel stressful from the beginning, it is perfectly fine to get used to the game’s atmosphere through Item Mode first and then try Speed Mode.
Third, I found it easier not to chase every kart released each season.
If every new kart makes the one you already have feel weak, the game quickly becomes tiring. I got better results by settling on one kart I used often and trying others only after I had grown comfortable with its controls.
Lastly, I did not copy other people’s control settings exactly.
Finger size and screen size are different for everyone, so a layout that feels comfortable to someone else may feel awkward to me. Rather than overhauling everything at once, I found it easier to adjust one or two button positions at a time and play several races to adapt.

Why the KartRider series has stayed with me
The charm of the KartRider series is that even when the screen and platform change from one title to the next, its core fun is instantly recognizable.
The brief tension before the start signal, the feeling of a drift locking in at the corner, and the moment when a single item flips the standings just before the finish line all remained familiar, even as the games changed.
More than anything, there was always plenty to laugh about, even when skill alone was not enough.
If you fell off a shortcut by yourself, trapped yourself in your own water bomb, or lost a race you had almost won at the very end, it was less something to be angry about and more one more story for your friends to bring up later.
That is why, for me, KartRider was always a series where the strangely lost races stayed in my memory longer than the perfectly won ones.
You cannot start the original KartRider or Drift directly now, but if you want to experience the atmosphere of the series, Rush+, which is still running, is the most realistic place to begin. Since seasons and events can change, be sure to check the official community for the latest information before you start. (KartRider Rush+)
To me, the KartRider series is both a game from the past and one my hands still respond to before my mind does.
Even if I come back after years away, I somehow reach for the drift button at the very first corner.
And after hitting the wall, I always say the same thing.
“That round was just practice. The real one starts next round.”
Among game series that stretch across multiple titles, is there one that makes you come back and start again every time a new installment appears?
