Some stories spread naturally among players despite having no basis in a game's official lore or mechanics. They range from claims that certain places have better item drops to rumors that a particular NPC gives you better odds of enhancing your gear. They're hard to believe, yet somehow you still want to try them at least once. That seems to be the appeal of gaming urban legends.

The one that has stayed with me most is the well-known “enhancement rumor” among players of 《Mabinogi Mobile》​.

The Enhancement Rumor: “Osla Will Make It Work”

Mabinogi Mobile players have been passing around one particular enhancement rumor for a long time.

The story goes that if you attempt enhancements at the blacksmith shops in Tir Chonaill, Bangor, and Dunbarton in that order, and keep failing until your enhancement points reach 98%, the NPC “Osla” in Emain Macha will make your final attempt succeed​.

None of this has been officially confirmed, but the story quietly spread among players whose enhancements kept failing, eventually taking on the air of an urban legend. After a string of failed attempts, it's not uncommon to see someone joke, “I guess it's time to see Osla.”

Enhancement Materials Are Scarier Than the Rumor

The interesting part of this rumor isn't whether it actually works.

The problem is failing over and over until your enhancement points reach 98%. By then, you've spent so many enhancement materials and so much gold that the loss is hard to laugh off. During my own streaks of failed attempts, I've even caught myself wondering, “Do I really need to go see Osla?”

A rumor is just a rumor, of course, but I can understand why players start putting their hopes in stories like this as the failures pile up.

Why Hope for Success Before 100%?

There's another reason Mabinogi Mobile's enhancement system makes so many players nervous.

When your enhancement points reach 100% and you get a guaranteed enhancement, your points reset to 0% for the next enhancement level​.

In other words, if you keep failing all the way to 98~99% before finally getting a guaranteed enhancement, you have to build up failures from scratch at the next level, too. That's why most players are so eager to get lucky and succeed before reaching 100%.

This system makes every click of the enhance button tense. Somehow, the more attempts fail, the more believable the rumor starts to sound.

Why Players Keep Talking About It

I think this enhancement rumor has lasted so long because everyone has experienced a string of failed enhancements at least once. When the failures keep coming, it's natural to wonder, “Should I try a different location this time?” or “Would a different NPC make it work?” Those shared experiences seem to have grown into an entertaining urban legend.

There's no official mechanic behind it, but sharing these stories and laughing about them together is perhaps part of what makes MMORPGs uniquely enjoyable.

Closing Thoughts

To me, gaming urban legends are less about scares and more about the culture players create together. True or not, Mabinogi Mobile's enhancement rumor is well known enough that anyone who attempts enhancements has probably heard it at least once.

Of course, I still hope I never have to visit Osla after failing all the way to 98%. Watching my enhancement materials disappear rattles me more than any urban legend could.
