Anyone who loves games has probably thought about this at least once.
Which is more fun: an RPG, where you build up a character and chase long-term goals,
or a competitive game, where your own skill decides the outcome and the payoff is immediate?
Right now, I play Nexon's Mabinogi Mobile and Overwatch on a regular basis.
One is a progression-focused RPG, and the other is built around competition.
I like both, but after spending a lot of time with them, I realized which kind of fun suits me better.
Overwatch, where every match feels electric
The biggest appeal of Overwatch is, naturally, the thrill of competition.

I mainly play Kiriko, Zenyatta, D.Va, and Symmetra,
and the closer the two teams are in skill, the more enjoyable the match becomes.
Especially when we come back from what looked like a certain loss and somehow win anyway... that rush is hard to describe.
On the other hand, when one side is simply too strong or too weak,
and the match turns completely one-sided, it actually becomes less fun.
In the end, what I seem to love most is not victory itself,
but the sense of accomplishment that comes after a genuinely hard-fought game.
In competitive play, I’ve reached Master on healer, and Diamond on both tank and DPS.
Maybe that’s why Overwatch is still the first game I think of whenever I want to really lock in and lose myself in a match.
Mabinogi Mobile, where steady growth keeps stacking up
By contrast, Mabinogi Mobile offers a completely different kind of fun.

When I first started, I thought raising combat power was the most important thing.
But the more I played, the more I realized something mattered more than the numbers.
What really counted was collecting runes I could actually use in real combat.

So now, I play with a different goal: collecting a wide range of runes, filling out the rune codex,
and building the best setup for my class.

Every day, I run dungeons and hunting grounds, and I tackle weekly content like Abyss and raids to gather the runes I need.
Especially once I’ve saved up enough silver coins, the moment I head into dungeons and hunting grounds to pull for a new rune is the one I look forward to most.

I used to dislike Mondays,
but now they’re the busiest day of the week and the one I anticipate most, because that’s when the weekly rewards reset.
Once Monday arrives, I end up having the most fun because I’m busy running Abyss and raids and picking up all kinds of rewards.
When growth becomes visible

The most satisfying moment in Mabinogi Mobile
is when I can actually feel that my character has grown stronger.
Whether it’s clearing a dungeon that used to stop me,
or finishing Abyss Hell difficulty faster than before,
that’s when the reward of growth really sinks in.

More than anything, what matters to me is
becoming the kind of character who can reliably do their part and fulfill their role when I’m playing with friends.
For me, the biggest appeal of Mabinogi Mobile is that gradual process of growing toward that goal.
So which genre fits me better in the end?

Overwatch is thrilling.
Facing opponents at a similar skill level, fighting through a tense match,
and then pulling off a comeback win at the very end creates a special kind of satisfaction.

But Mabinogi Mobile is different.
The time I put in today turns into growth tomorrow,
and the fact that small daily investments remain behind as visible results
brings a deep sense of satisfaction.
So if I could only choose one game to play in a day,
I’d probably choose Mabinogi Mobile.
If Overwatch is the game I turn to when I want to play with full intensity,
then Mabinogi Mobile is the game that has quietly become part of my daily life.
Closing thoughts
RPGs, where the joy comes from steadily building up growth, and competitive games, where everything hinges on a single match
Both genres have their own appeal,
but for me, progression-based RPGs seem to be the better fit,
because the time I steadily invest stays with me as something meaningful in the end.
