So what even is nostalgia bias?
If gaming is one of your hobbies, every now and then you suddenly catch yourself thinking, “Man, that game was really fun. Should I try it again for the first time in forever?”
The problem is, real life gets in the way, so actually acting on that thought isn’t easy—and even when you do boot it up, it’s weirdly easy to just sit there and feel completely lost.
Sometimes the game itself is hard to find, or you finally install it and immediately go, wait... I used to play something that looked like this? The graphics are that rough...?

Yep. This is about me.
I tried going back to the original Mabinogi more than once too.
It definitely felt like 4K in my memory back then, so I had the thought “wait, it looks THIS rough?????” about ten thousand times.
Every time I came back, I upgraded my gear, bought pets, and put in effort in my own way. But somehow, I never stayed for very long.
Part of it was that after playing other games, readjusting to the 화질구지(...) was hard enough on its own, but the biggest reason was the story.
I’m sure I used to follow it seriously, but once I actually logged back in, I couldn’t remember how far I’d gotten. But starting all over from the beginning felt like a waste because I’d already built up my character, and even when I looked for summary posts, the story had gone on for so long that it still wasn’t easy to catch up.
There was also the spec issue.
Whenever I logged in after a long break, I had to start with all the proficiency grinding I’d been putting off. When the list of stuff you have to do gets too long, even opening the game starts to feel like a chore.
Since it’s an old game, there also weren’t many newbies left. The friends I used to play with back in the day were either off playing other games, or had quit because real life hit too hard. There was only so much I could do while trying to figure everything out and play solo.
That’s how I ended up starting Mabinogi Mobile.
It hasn’t been out that long, so the graphics are clean and the characters are cute. Honestly, it’s fun just seeing your character every time you log in.
And it supports both PC and mobile.
At home, I play on my computer, and when I’m out, I can log in on my phone. For an online game, it’s pretty accessible.
It also has auto-battle. At first I was worried—can an RPG even work like that?—but once I tried it, it was actually pretty convenient on busy days. And when I wanted to play things myself, I liked that manual play was still an option.
Character customization is also fairly simple, and if you change your mind later, you can switch things up through reincarnation. In other RPGs, I’ve spent literal hours making a single character and then gotten tired enough to quit, so saving that energy is definitely a plus.
Personally, what I liked most was the class system.
If you play games long enough, you know this happens: the class you’ve been building suddenly gets awkward after one patch. In Mabinogi Mobile, thanks to the proficiency system and the weapon swap system, switching over to a different class line felt relatively painless.
Of course, yes, it is also true that sometimes I think, “Why is it always my class that gets nerfed?” and start wanting to grab a spear.
More than anything, I think the chance encounter system is kind of a huge win.
You don’t have to wait that long to run dungeons or other content, and it’s also fairly easy to find people through the party-matching board.
On top of that, with the Season 2 update not far off, maybe that’s part of it, but the player count also seems pretty healthy. This might actually be the game at its most active right now (though, to be fair, there is such a thing as one last burst before the fade-out).
Life content like production skills and part-time jobs was also much easier to enjoy compared to the original game.
Back then, you had to sink a lot of time into raising even a single stat, but now it’s something you can do with a lot less pressure.
Of course, everyone’s going to have different tastes.
But if you’re someone who thinks, “I used to like MMORPGs, but getting back into one now feels like a lot,” then I do think Mabinogi Mobile is worth checking out at least once.
I’m saying that as someone who failed the comeback multiple times, and is now enjoying it pretty comfortably.
Anyway, Season 2 is coming soon, so I guess I should stick with it a little longer.
