Having fun and making the most of life in Erinn?

Certain images and feelings come to mind when you think of Mabinogi’s “Erinn,” don’t they?

The kind you just can’t find anywhere else~

As someone who’s played both Mabinogi and Mabinogi Mobile,

I’d love to share the images of Mabinogi that have stayed with me over time!

I wonder how the Erinn I picture

compares to the Erinn you’ve come to know, adventurers.

With its roots in a particular mythology, Mabinogi’s world

has such a dreamy, mysterious feel to it.

It’s wonderful to meet not just humans, but gods and extraordinary races,

and the stories they live through are fascinating, too.

There’s something so enchanting about magic and alchemy, too.

They take the place of science, helping all sorts of things in this world make sense.

And isn’t there something romantic about all of this being passed down through bards’ songs~

It means all those adventures you’ve had become legends told by the people in the game, doesn’t it?

Shall we try putting those feelings Mabinogi gives us into words?

Hearing a god’s voice, getting caught up in battles between gods,

being called a hero, yet becoming someone others fear,

facing enemies, but finding trusted companions along the way…

In some ways, it all feels serious, heavy, and melancholy,

but there’s a brightness and hope to it, too🤔

Keeping those stories in mind, I gave each image plenty of thought

and put together a mood board for Mabinogi and Erinn.

I toned down the saturation a little and adjusted the brightness,

but keeping everything from looking too dark was trickier than I expected.

Here’s why I chose each image!

First - A Statue of Nike, the Goddess of Victory

I chose this statue of Nike, with its two broken wings and missing arms,

because it reminded me of the goddess Morrighan, held captive by Cichol and unable to move!

Even without that connection, a sculpture of a deity felt like a natural choice.

So many different gods appear in Mabinogi, after all.

Second - Old, Weathered Architecture

I picked this with the great city of “Tara” in Mabinogi in mind,

or “Emain Macha” in Mabinogi Mobile.

A city I must protect, or a town already in ruins and the people who lived there…

A kingdom in peril, a king and knights asking an adventurer for help…

I can already picture a whole story taking shape🤩

Third - A Forest with Towering Trees

I wanted an image that felt… close to nature, perhaps?

Forests, wide-open meadows, towering trees, and fields of wildflowers in full bloom all came to mind,

so this was the photo I chose for the mood board.

Fighting Fomors in the forest,

subduing a giant animal driven wild by some harmful power,

or having a spirit or fairy suddenly appear~

Wouldn’t it be the perfect setting for an important story to unfold?

Fourth - Celtic Patterns or Knots

You know that pattern you see every day in Mabinogi, right?

The one that looks a bit like a cross and a bit like a twisted doughnut!

It’s one of those images you simply can’t leave out when you think of Mabinogi👍

And beyond that familiar pattern, take a closer look at things like the characters’ clothes in Mabinogi,

and you’ll spot Celtic patterns in all sorts of shapes.

Fifth - A Western-Style Cooking Pot, or Cauldron

Bubble, bubble~ You know the pot that so often appears in Western stories, with a potion or stew simmering away inside?

You’ll see one when the hero and their companions stay at an inn,

or stop along the road to light a campfire and cook a simple meal!

Sometimes, a mysterious being or a healer will be brewing medicine in one, too~

It’s hard to imagine traditional fantasy stories like these without one, isn’t it?

In Mabinogi Mobile, you cook over a campfire, too,

and gather around it with your party to share a meal before taking on dungeons and other challenges, don’t you?

So that pot naturally came to mind~

Sixth - A Horse, Your Traveling Companion

As the hero of your story in Erinn, you travel far and wide, solving problems along the way,

but you probably couldn’t have managed it all on your own two feet.

It’s having a horse of your own, always by your side, that makes it possible!

Whenever I played Mabinogi or Mabinogi Mobile,

traveling through all those vast places reminded me how much my horse meant to me.

I even gave the name plenty of thought—that says it all, doesn’t it~

I wonder what names you’ve given your traveling companions.

I’m trusting you to have picked something lovely or grand, adventurers😁

The mood board on its own felt a little too serious,

so I made a color board, too, using shades that remind me of Mabinogi and Erinn.

For the original Mabinogi alone, I’d lean toward a little more red and orange, or slightly lower saturation,

but for Mabinogi Mobile, this level of saturation feels just right.

Erinn on a dark night or at dawn, with something suspicious afoot~

Those were the scenes I pictured while choosing these colors. What do you think, adventurers?

As I brought together these impressions of Mabinogi,

all those different experiences came back to me, and I found myself lost in memories again.

I remembered the moments I’d shared with so many fellow adventurers, too~
