A Look Back at MapleStory’s Most Impactful Titles #이미지보드
마빡도로시
Hello
The keyword for this post is the imageboard idea: bringing together the images that immediately come to mind when you think of a particular game.
With that in mind, I gathered some of MapleStory’s most iconic update title images. MapleStory has been running for a very long time while continuing to put up steady results, and that likely would not have been possible without repeatedly making the changes and adjustments each era called for.
Every update was part of that larger process, so none of them were truly meaningless. Still, some clearly had a bigger impact than others, so I collected those titles and briefly looked into what kind of patch each one actually brought.
MapleStory’s Iconic Titles
1) Closed Beta : 2002~2003
Apparently, this image was used all the way back in the 2002 closed beta. Even for me, it comes from such an early period that I would never have known it existed if I had not run across it while searching before, which somehow made it feel fresh.
Of course, a huge amount has changed since then, but what stands out is how Henesys Market has still managed to preserve part of its original shape over all that time.
It really makes me wonder whether the developers and testers back then ever imagined MapleStory would still be running today. The illustrations later used for the characters in Comic MapleStory also seem to date back to this period, and it was interesting to realize those characters were created even earlier than I had expected.
2) Open Beta : 2003/4/29
This is probably the login screen a lot of people still remember. I can’t help thinking the success MapleStory found at this stage laid the foundation for the IP to remain appealing all the way up to the present.
Personally, I used to think a lot of the fun from that era was being heavily amplified by nostalgia, but seeing how massively successful Maple Land once became, maybe the process itself really was that fun too. Of course, it is not at that same level now, but I hear it still maintains a steady player count.
3) [BIGBANG] Update : 2010/7/8
The BIGBANG update, often described as MapleStory’s first truly major overhaul, introduced so many drastic changes that even now it feels fair to say the game before and after the patch were practically two different games.
The UI overhaul, hunting map terrain changes, world map revisions, and skill reworks all had an enormous impact on play, of course, but the most immediately noticeable point for players was probably the EXP reduction.
When you look at how many online MMORPGs, for one reason or another, fail to move away from their old formulas and end up shutting down or simply hanging on, this kind of radical patch feels especially striking. It was a bold move that clearly could not ignore the risks involved.
4) [V] Update : 2016/6/30
The [V] update in 2016 was the one that first introduced 5th Job, and it is often viewed as the patch that put MapleStory, which had been trending downward at the time, back on a growth track.
Recent patches have changed the enhancement method, but the Core Gemstones added then are still in use, and 5th Job skills remain an essential part of the game.
Arcane River and the Force system also arrived around this time, and since both still carry a lot of weight even now, this was clearly a major update.
Lucid, who is still popular now, was also released as a boss monster during this period.
5) [Black Mage] Update : 2018/6/21
The [Black Mage] update in 2018 was, as the title itself makes clear, the patch that brought the Black Mage storyline to its conclusion.
Since this character was first mentioned as far back as 2007, he had served as a central figure in the story for a full 11 years. In that sense, you could say this was a pretty grand farewell given with the proper level of respect.
The overall event difficulty, structure, and the way the Arcane River story was wrapped up at the time do seem to have drawn criticism when you look back on them now, but this update also included what could be seen as the earliest form of today’s event “tonics,” and
it remains meaningful as the point where Tera Burning first appeared and MapleStory’s Part 1 officially came to an end.
6) [NEWAGE] Update : 2023/7/13
As the name suggests, the [NEWAGE] update in 2023 was rolled out under the ambitious banner of a new era.
This was when 6th Job arrived, seven years after 5th Job first appeared in 2016. With 6th Job came 6th Job skills, Sol Erda, and Sol Erda Fragments, all of which had a major effect on gameplay.
At the same time, that title seems to have reflected not just in-game considerations but external ones as well, because this update marked the point where MapleStory’s director changed, and the game’s operational direction also started to look noticeably different from before.
7) [ASSEMBLE] Update : 2025/6/19
The [ASSEMBLE] update in June 2025 ended up becoming a level of success that nobody had expected, with several factors overlapping at once. Even without a Hot Time event running, it became a major talking point by reaching a 25% PC cafe share as of June 19.
The main additions were the new class Ren, Ascent Skills, and the first Adversary, and all three received a fair amount of praise in their respective areas. On top of that, the first-ever sale of the Genesis Pass came alongside major quality-of-life improvements such as cooldown reset on boss entry, shared Cash Storage access, and Buff Sequence.
8) [CROWN] Update : 2026/4/29
As for [CROWN], the most recent update, it still does not have quite the same level of impact or influence as the other titles above if you judge only the update itself.
That said, the “economy-related changes” mentioned at the showcase and in January’s Maple Now seem like the kind of thing that could have a major effect on future MapleStory play in the current situation, so I decided to include it as the last entry in this lineup.
For now, there was a remark suggesting these changes would likely be applied within the first half of the year, and based on the planned schedule, that would overlap with the period when the anniversary update is underway.
At the showcase, while mentioning the Genesis Pass, they said that resale might become possible again after the planned economic measures are taken, and that this move would be different from previous pricing adjustments. In Maple Now, they also used the phrase “fundamental change.” Taken together, a lot of players seem to think a very impactful measure is on the way. Hopefully, it turns into a patch that has a positive effect for the people who care deeply about the game.
