Magatia in MapleStory, where medieval elements are woven into the setting #중세시대게임

Hello.

The keyword of this post is medieval-themed games. The medieval period has a distinctive appeal of its own, and for that reason its imagery is often woven into a wide range of creative works, usually in combination with fantasy elements.

One of MapleStory’s often-cited strengths is that, because it began as an open-ended game without a strongly defined central storyline, it can borrow from almost any kind of setting when designing a region without creating any real sense of dissonance. In this post, I took a look at Magatia, one of MapleStory’s towns that most clearly draws on medieval elements.

Magatia is a town in the Nihal Desert, home to alchemists who practice alchemy, one of the pursuits most closely associated with the medieval period.

Its buildings carry a fantasy-medieval atmosphere, and that same aesthetic extends to the interiors as well.

The town is split between two alchemist factions, Zenumist and Alcadno.

The Alcadno Association, located on the right side of town, is built around the idea that alchemy and science should be combined, and that concept is reflected in its monsters as well.

On the left side of town, the Zenumist Society is devoted to the pursuit of pure alchemy, and this idea is likewise reflected in its monsters.

One part that remained particularly memorable to me was the test required to enter the Zenumist Association.

The process involved obtaining information from Broker Han, demonstrating alchemy in front of Carson, having your skill acknowledged, and then proceeding with admission into the association, and I remember it standing out because the sequence itself was quietly enjoyable.

Magatia also once had an enhancement system whose concept suited alchemy perfectly: Maker . If you take the portal above to Stan’s Workshop, you can still see the NPCs who handled it at the time.

The fact that the three are named after soccer players is an interesting detail. They were once responsible for the old Maker system, and while I do not know the finer points, it appears to have been an equipment crafting system well suited to Magatia’s concept, involving things such as creating equipment and enhancing mineral items with catalysts that are no longer used.

It is said that when this system existed, crystals were also divided into low-, mid-, and high-grade categories, which is interesting to me because I have no memory of that myself.

At present, unlike other equipment repair NPCs, whose lines have been standardized as shown above, these characters still display individual dialogue, and I find myself wondering whether that reflects a certain degree of special treatment or whether it, too, has simply been left behind.

Lastly, Magatia is significant as the town where the Black Mage was first mentioned. The storyline centered on Humanoid A is still well regarded in many respects even now, nearly 20 years later, so if the subject interests you, I would strongly recommend either experiencing it for yourself or seeking out related posts and videos. Broker Han hints at this as well, but it creates the sense that the townscape, which once appeared beautiful, can come to feel quite different.
