Break these and you’re asking for it! 3 basic gaming etiquette rules

Hello, I’m Jaepamin,

and I’m a big fan of MapleStory and Mabinogi Mobile!

In games, there are times when you lose but still feel good because you gave it everything you had, or when the match feels more meaningful than a simple win. That’s when people say “a good loss well fought”.

Today, I’m going over 3 basic pieces of gaming etiquette that can make a match feel more valuable than victory itself through mutual respect and consideration. If you’re a newbie, you really need to know these. Let’s go!

Don’t be late

Untitled-1

This is basic manners even outside of games, right? If you’ve set a time to do something with other players, you absolutely should not be late.

The people you made plans with could be all kinds of players, like:

  • someone who logged in by carving time out of a busy day

  • someone who got on even though they were exhausted after work

  • a student who finished their homework and finally got 1 hour of free time

There are all sorts of situations like that. Everyone is giving up their own time to keep that appointment, so please make sure you do too!

Learn the patterns

When you’re taking on a newly released boss with guildmates or friends, there’s always a mix of nerves and excitement. In my opinion, the fastest way to ruin that feeling is not knowing the boss patterns 🤔

If you don’t learn the boss patterns in advance, the run gets delayed, and it can frustrate the players who came prepared so they wouldn’t inconvenience anyone else.

It’s basically like showing up for a group project having prepared absolutely nothing! 🫡

Whenever possible, it’s better to at least familiarize yourself with the patterns a little before joining a boss run. Of course, this doesn’t apply to blind progression parties! 😁

Build a proper team comp

It depends on the player, but most people prefer playing DPS because it lets them play more proactively. But if you want to win, you usually have no choice but to balance tanks, healers, and DPS.

Sometimes people get too caught up in what they want, ignore the team comp, and end up contributing to a loss. When that happens, feelings get hurt and arguments can start.

My regular party members: Swordsman, Archer, Cryomancer, and Priest!

If possible, it’s better to take turns adjusting the comp for each other, or build a party with players whose main roles are already settled.

I think games are a kind of social life too. RPGs especially have a lot of people who are connected through mutuals, so if everyone keeps basic manners, good things will follow.
