If I had to pick one recent Steam release that really stands out, it would definitely be ARC Raiders!

It's an extraction shooter developed by Embark Studios, a Nexon subsidiary.

It feels like the first truly solid game I've played in quite a while.

In a post-apocalyptic world overrun by robots called “ARC,” you take on the role of a “Raider,” fighting to survive on a ruined Earth!

If you're new to extraction shooters, I've put together a beginner's guide to help you get started.

What Is an Extraction Shooter?

Simply put, an extraction shooter is a game where you loot, fight, and escape.

You gather loot on the battlefield and fight other players (Raiders) or ARC (monsters), but you only get to keep your items if you extract at the end. If you fail, you lose everything.

That makes every match a thrill! It's easier to get into than Escape from Tarkov, another game in the genre, so I think newcomers will pick it up pretty quickly.

Battlefields & Loadouts

Five maps have been revealed so far: Dam Battlegrounds, Buried City, Spaceport, Blue Gate, and Stella Montis.

When you first start, only Dam Battlegrounds is unlocked. Looting routes are easy to learn, and it's clear where fights are likely to happen, so finding your feet shouldn't be too difficult.

Before deploying, you'll put together a loadout with weapons, healing items, and other supplies.

You only keep the gear you bring if you extract successfully, so I recommend starting with a free loadout while you get a feel for the game. That takes the pressure off—you have nothing to lose if you die.

*A quick tip: if you're taking valuable items in your loadout, make sure you have a “Safe Pocket.”

It lets you keep some items even if you die!

On one of my first runs, I went in fully geared, ran into another player early on, and lost it all..!

Looting & Combat Guide

You'll spawn at a random location when you enter the battlefield, so check your map first. Spotting the main looting areas early will help you plan your route without unnecessary detours.

Once you reach a looting area, you'll find all sorts of loot containers. Search them thoroughly and gather those items!

Surprisingly, the ARC monsters are more dangerous than other players. They use a variety of attack patterns, so rushing in blindly could get you taken down.

When I'm carrying plenty of loot, I've found it best to prioritize survival by staying hidden and avoiding threats as I move.

Taking down ARC can earn you good loot, too, so be sure to aim for their weak points!

How Do You Extract?

Once you're done looting, it's time to extract.
You can escape through the cargo elevators or Raider Hatches marked on your map.

Calling a cargo elevator sets off a siren that draws ARC to your location. Get inside quickly and activate the controls for a speedy return to Speranza.

Raider Hatches, on the other hand, require a specific item to open.
With all my hard-earned loot on the line, I found extraction to be the most nerve-racking part.

Post-Combat Rewards & Progression!

Such a satisfying moment!

After a successful extraction, the items you collected during your expedition are tallied up.

You can use these resources to craft or upgrade gear.
Different battlefields and unexpected situations kept every match fresh for me!

Leveling up also lets you upgrade your skills, so take your time developing your character.

The tension of an extraction shooter, realistic combat, and the mix of cooperation and betrayal made for an experience I found genuinely addictive!

Now that Nexon's new venture has found its footing, I'm excited to see what future updates bring.
