Boss Etiquette Tips for New MapleStory Players

This post was created as part of NEXON PEAK activities.

Hello.

In this article, I have gathered some bossing etiquette tips worth reviewing if you are new to MapleStory. Some cover basic courtesies, such as being on time, while others are conventions established within the game. It is worth familiarizing yourself with both.

How important is party play in MapleStory in 2026?

As of 2026, most hunting and other content in MapleStory is solo-only, with no option for party play.

  • Hunting: All hunting maps for level 60 and above are instanced. When you enter, monsters spawn that only you can see.

  • Guild content: Both Culvert and Flag Race are solo activities.

  • Monster Park Extreme: A relatively recent update changed it from a party dungeon into an additional quest you can complete after clearing Monster Park 5 times.

  • Most content, including Monster Park, Epic Dungeons, and Arcane River weekly content, can only be played solo.

Even so, party play still matters in MapleStory. One reason is the Blast-style events that appear occasionally.

These events are not especially frequent, but they return every so often. During the event, you play through a particular dungeon while transformed into a specific character. Each event has its own theme and strategies, so some appeal to players more than others. Look up the relevant guides whenever one appears.

Clearing these dungeons is practically impossible without knowing the strategy. If you use quick matchmaking rather than play with people you know, study a guide beforehand to avoid problems.

More importantly, party play is a major part of boss content, becoming almost mandatory for higher-tier bosses. Players often start joining parties for Extreme Lotus and above. The value of the Intense Power Crystal alone varies significantly by difficulty, as do the valuable rare drops available. Some players prefer to run bosses exclusively solo because they dislike party play, but this means missing out on potential rewards.

If you started in Challenger World, you can reasonably treat the bosses covered by its missions (previously up to Normal 최초의 대적자) as the range you can tackle solo without losing out.

Tips for new players: What is a multiplier?

You can find boss parties through open chat rooms or the in-game boss recruitment board.

A common term you will see is “multiplier.” Players rely on this metric more than the official Combat Power stat. To check yours, visit MapleScouter, enter your character name, and open the Efficiency and Boss Thresholds tab under Analysis & Optimization. Virtually every player uses this site. Your character's multiplier for each boss indicates how ready you are to challenge it.

Keep in mind that these multipliers assume you are using all commonly used buffs.

Scroll down on that page to see which buffs are applied, as shown here. The figures include various consumable and Cash buffs, as well as Legion's Blessing at its maximum level. Your multiplier can therefore differ greatly depending on whether you use these buffs. You can select the options you want on the site to see the difference in detail.

When playing in a party, especially if you barely meet the minimum clear threshold, these buffs can make the difference between success and failure. Remember to use them rather than save them for later.

Tips for new players: Agree on key details before forming a party

This matters for regular parties, but it is especially important for temporary groups of players who do not know each other, often called public parties. Discuss these details as you form the party, before the run begins, to help prevent disagreements.

  • Reward distribution: How will miscellaneous drops and valuable rare items be divided?

  • Boss experience: Are you recruiting beginners to practice together, or experienced players for a quick clear?

  • Retries: If a party member uses up all their lives and is removed from the fight, will the remaining members leave and try again?

All of these points matter. The retry policy is particularly important: if the remaining members defeat the boss, the player who ran out of lives also has the boss marked as cleared, but receives no rewards.

The recruitment post may already cover these details. If it does not, agree on them beforehand to avoid problems later.

Tips for new players: Reward rooms

After you clear the final phase of almost any weekly boss, you move to a boss reward map. New players should keep a few things in mind here as well.

  • Follow the agreed-upon reward distribution rules.

  • The player with the highest Item Drop Rate should attack and open the reward chest.

Item Drop Rate bonuses apply to the reward chest, so the player with the highest Item Drop Rate should open it. Do not break it as soon as you enter.

This applies to solo clears as well. Use a preset to switch to your drop-rate setup before opening the chest. If you forgot to buy Legion's Luck, you can purchase it through the Buff Manager in the reward map, provided you have Legion Coins.

  • Blink roll: Everyone uses Blink, and whoever travels the farthest gets the item.

Usually, everyone uses the skill from the left side of the map, and the player who ends up farthest to the right wins. Occasionally, players try to cheat by teleporting or jumping, but these attempts are always noticed.

This is the site players mean when they refer to the reward split calculator.
