Play a game long enough, and you inevitably collect items that carry personal memories. They do not have to be anything special in themselves; it is the memories attached to them that inspire affection, or sometimes a love-hate relationship. For this post, I have picked out a few of those items.

Dorothy Cube Chair : 2022

The Dorothy Cube Chair is one of the cube chairs you can earn as a Monster Collection reward.

You need to register a total of 25 monsters, but the real stumbling block is not on floor 50—it is the 2 beetles on floor 48. As 2-star regular monsters, they have a low registration chance, and with only around 10 of each appearing in a run that takes 40~50 minutes, they are a much bigger obstacle than you might expect.

Even with ring boxes available back then, farming rank 2 boxes was more efficient because you could stop at floor 41 and finish a run quickly, and the odds of a valuable drop were too low to justify the time spent going further. That made the whole process really tough, and my bad luck stretched it out to over 2 years, so what I felt when they finally registered is genuinely hard to put into words.

Blooming Maple Medal : 2021

The Blooming Maple Medal is an 18th-anniversary medal, and it stands out in my memory because it came from the anniversary event held after the player conference.

The player conference took place in April, and earning this medal meant completing every attendance check-in for the anniversary event that followed, so it may have ended up in fewer players' hands than medals from other anniversary events.

The memory itself is not a happy one, but I do not think anyone back then could have imagined how well MapleStory would go on to do, right up to today. Looking at it that way, I think this anniversary medal carries a certain significance.

Pink Bean Transformation Potion (Permanent) : 2019

The permanent Pink Bean Transformation Potion is a modest little item with a particularly useful perk. Just as the description says, it lets you transform into Pink Bean for 10 minutes.

Other potions are gone after a single use, but this one lives up to the “permanent” in its name: using it does not consume it.

As the tooltip above also shows, other transformation potions restrict certain animations, whereas this one lets you lie down and climb ladders without any trouble. I remember being in Pink Bean form most of the time when I was chatting with people I knew in town.

This potion used to be a reward for completing the diary in the [Pink Bean World] event, but the 2019 version was the last chance to earn it, and it has not returned as a reward since. More recently, Pink Bean World itself has disappeared, leaving only special worlds during collaborations, so I suspect this item will remain hard to obtain.

As with other transformation potions, you can use it after drinking an Advanced Giant Potion to grow huge. The result is devastatingly cute.
