Hello! I'm 온야.

When you create a new character in MapleStory, one choice can take longer than picking a class: your character name.

I recommend combining your usual nickname with the class name. It saves time whenever you create a character and gives your characters a consistent naming style that's uniquely yours!

01. Just Insert the Class Name into Your Nickname!

My usual nickname is “온야”.

When I create a MapleStory character, I use this formula: “온 + a shortened form of the class name + 야”.

Class

Combination

Character Name

Mercedes

온 + 메 + 야

온메야

Demon Slayer

온 + 데 + 야

온데야

Instead of coming up with an entirely new name each time, you only need to choose the syllable in the middle.

Which part of the class name you use is up to you. Try the first syllable, or choose one that makes the name flow naturally. If the name is already taken, try a different syllable from the class name.

I like how small variations on a familiar nickname make even a new character feel like one of my own. ^_^

02. Take the Effort Out of Naming Legion Characters

This method is especially handy when leveling multiple characters for Legion.

When you have plenty of characters to level, getting stuck on a name every time can wear you out before you even start. I'd rather not spend that time puzzling over names—I want to create my characters and get to leveling!

With so many longtime MapleStory players, I've found it hard to find a short, two-syllable Korean name I like. Even when I come up with a good one, it's often already taken.

That's when building on your usual nickname can help narrow down your options.

You can keep the beginning and ending fixed, as I do, or add a class trait or a word you like to your existing nickname.

Best of all, it's satisfying to see characters with similar names together because they look like members of the same raid team. I leveled them all myself, but their matching names make them look like a coordinated group. ㅎㅎ

03. A Rare Name to Me, Even If No One Else Recognizes It!

Another option is to use the name of a character from a webtoon or another work you enjoy.

I sometimes use character names from works I like. The character doesn't have to be famous or recognizable to everyone.

In fact, using a favorite character's name makes me feel more attached to my own character, even if no one else recognizes the reference. Seeing the name also reminds me of a work I enjoy. It's less about choosing a name others will recognize and more about choosing one I enjoy seeing.

04. Want to Rename a Character You've Already Created?

What if you come up with a new name and want to use it for a character you're already leveling?

You can change that character's name, too.

To rename your character, visit the NPC “Mr. Newname” in town.

You can find him in several towns, including Henesys, Ellinia, and Leafre.

Here's how to change your character's name:

1. Log in with the character you want to rename and visit Mr. Newname.

2. Select “Change Character Name” from the dialogue menu.

3. Read the notices and click [Continue].

4. Enter the name you want and click [Change].

5. You'll return to the character selection screen. Log in again to play with your new name.

Changing your character's name requires a “Character Name Change Coupon” or 15,000 Maple Points.

If you have both, the coupon will be used first.

Keep in mind that the change cannot be undone, and you cannot change your name again for 7 days. If a name is already taken or contains prohibited words, you cannot use it, so double-check your choice before confirming!

There's also an occasional name-trading event called “New Name Auction”. (It runs about 1 time per year, and this year's event was held in June.)

If you're looking for a particular name, try checking the announcements when the event opens.

I usually stick to combinations of names I've come up with myself, but if there's a name you've always wanted, it may be worth waiting for the New Name Auction!

05. Stuck on a Name? Try This Checklist!

If you can't think of a name for a new character, work through these questions in order.

- Do you have a nickname you usually use? → Keep some parts fixed and try variations

- Are you planning to level multiple classes? → Shorten each class name and insert it in the same spot

- Do you have a favorite webtoon or other work? → Think of your favorite characters' names

- Is the name already taken? → Use a different part of the class name or combine it with your existing nickname

I recommend this approach if, like me, you level several Legion characters or get stuck choosing a name whenever you create a new character. ㅎㅎ

If you're staring at the name field wondering what to enter, start with a name you already use!
