Gaming Nickname Ideas! How to Come Up with a Name for Your Character

One of the first decisions you face when starting an RPG is what to name your character.

Personally, I think a nickname in Mabinogi Mobile
is one way to show how much you care about your character.
In this post, I'll share what I look for in a nickname
and some naming methods I've used myself.

👀 I Know I Shouldn't Judge People by Their Nicknames, but...

1
Imagine using chance encounter matchmaking for an Abyss or raid in Mabinogi Mobile,
only to end up in a party with someone named “StorageCharacter” or “EventParticipant.”
Of course, a nickname doesn't tell you how good someone is at the game,
but names like these give me the impression that the player hasn't put much care into their character.
Fair or not, that makes me a little less confident in them—enough to consider queuing again.

2
Of course, Mabinogi Mobile has a charm system,
so a character's profile border color can also give you a sense of how invested the player is in the game.
I also look at their class, combat power, and magic resistance.

3
However, combat power and magic resistance aren't displayed in chance encounters,
so nicknames and profile borders tend to catch my eye first.
A nickname is, after all, part of how you present your character to other players.
So, how should you go about choosing one?

📜 An RPG Character Deserves a Name That Fits!

4
Here's my top recommendation:

For an RPG character's nickname, choose something that sounds natural, like a real person's name.
It doesn't matter whether it's Korean or from another language.
That's how I came up with my own character's name, “곤류.”

5
Take a healer nicknamed “HealerInsteadOfPotions,” for example.
If I meet a healer with a proper name of their own instead,
I tend to trust them a little more.

6
Of course, some people prefer funny nicknames,
and a funny name can certainly stick in your memory longer,
but for an RPG character you'll be playing for a long time, I recommend giving them a proper name from the start.

📝 Try Playing Around with Your Own Name!

The simplest way to come up with a name is to tweak your own.
If you'd rather not use your real name, try adapting the names of people you know,
your favorite celebrities, or characters from movies and TV shows.

Naming Method

Example

Lengthen the name

연 → 이언

Say it quickly

지아 → 쟈

Spell it as it sounds

진훈 → 지눈

You could take one syllable from your name
and pair it with a surname you like,
or change that syllable's pronunciation slightly.
Repeating a syllable from your name works quite well, too.

🎰 The Allure of Two-Character Nicknames, and 녜힁

7
Personally, I prefer short nicknames of around two or three Korean characters.
Fewer characters mean fewer possible combinations,
so a short name I like feels like what people call a “rare nickname.”
Characters with those names sometimes seem a little more trustworthy, too.
(Of course, that's purely a personal preference...)

8
Coming up with a short name from scratch can be more of a headache than you'd expect,
so it can help to start with whatever longer phrase comes to mind and shorten it.

9
One of our guild members, for instance, was creating a character
when they noticed that even young characters could have tattoos.
That gave them the idea for “문신충꼬맹이,” meaning “tattoo-obsessed kid.”

10
They were going to shorten it to “문꼬,” but noticed that “문” looks like “곰” when rotated 180 degrees,
so they ultimately settled on “곰꼬.”

11

When my younger cousin started Mabinogi Mobile,

they chose an embarrassingly edgy name: “무장의군주,” or “Lord of Arms.”
They liked it, but I couldn't stand looking at it,
so I told them to shorten it to “무군,” or add their surname and use “신무군” if that was taken.
They actually took my advice and changed it.

12
Another option is to use a site like “뉴녜힁 생성기.”
It generates random nicknames with your preferred number of characters,
though plenty of the combinations it produces are complete nonsense.

13
The site was inspired by a MapleStory player whose obsession with rare two-character nicknames
led them to choose the name “녜힁.”
Give it a few tries, and you might find a surprisingly usable name.

🧬 Naming Alts? One Shared Syllable Does the Trick

14
If you're leveling multiple alts,
I recommend choosing a syllable for them to share.
My six characters in Mabinogi Mobile are named
곤류, 대곤, 곤순, 곤우, 곤태, and 곤비,
so they all share the syllable “곤.”

15
For some, I added syllables from the names of people I know or Animal Crossing villagers.
For others, I asked AI for name suggestions.

16
When I played the original Mabinogi, I used “제로” as a shared given name,
changing only the surname to get 하제로, 여제로, and 남제로.
Sharing part of a name like this saves time when naming alts,
and gives your characters a nice sense of consistency.

🎟 A Fresh Start for 100 Deca

17
Even after trying several methods, you might still struggle to find a name you like.
But you don't have to stick with your first nickname forever.

18
Mabinogi Mobile
introduced character name changes in its January 15, 2026 update.
Using a “Character Name Change Ticket,” you can change your nickname at a limit of 1 change every 1 week.

Category

First purchase (1 per server)

100 Deca

Regular Character Name Change Ticket

990 Cash

The in-game cash shop currently sells these tickets at the prices listed above.
Your first purchase costs just 100 Deca, limited to 1 per server, so it's fairly affordable.

19
When changing your nickname, you can choose a unique name that isn't in use on any server,
or a unique character name you're already using on another server.
However, conditions determine when your old nickname is released or becomes available for reuse after a waiting period,
and past conversations and records will still display your old name after the change.

20
With Character Name Change Tickets available,
there's no need to put too much pressure on yourself
if you can't think of a name you want when you first create your character.

🤔 Is a Name Really Worth Taking This Seriously?

Is there a right answer when it comes to choosing a gaming nickname? Nope.
Some people prefer funny names,
while others simply use a favorite word or character's name.

Still, when it comes to naming my own RPG characters,

I think I'll keep favoring two- or three-character nicknames that feel like real names.

If you're creating a new character and struggling to choose a nickname,
start by tweaking your own name or shortening a word inspired by something around you.
You might be surprised by how much you like the result.
