[Game Recommendation] Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4

‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’ has attracted attention for all sorts of reasons.

That tends to come with questions like “So, is it fun?” and “Is it actually worth playing?”

The name carries far less weight than it did back when I could pick up a Call of Duty game and trust that I would enjoy it.

Then again, given how badly some entries have dropped the ball, the series largely has itself to thank for that.

Still, while I am no hardcore FPS enthusiast, I have consistently kept up with the Call of Duty series,

so as a long-time casual player, I could hardly let Modern Warfare 4 pass me by.

As mentioned, though, the emphasis is on ‘casual’: I am not the sort of player who spends their time in online multiplayer

pulling off flashy moves; I am simply here for the campaign.

The price is in the 80,000-won range, for a campaign that lasts about 8 hours.

That works out to roughly 10,000 won an hour, about what you would spend at a comic café with some good snacks thrown in.

Of course, there is extra content along the way to sink some time into,

and working through what those areas have to offer can easily bring your playtime up to 10 hours.

I stuck to the bare minimum before moving on, so I reached the ending in about 8 hours.

So much for a short introduction.

To get straight to the point: “Yes, it is fun,” and “Yes, it is worth playing.”

My one-line verdict would be “A dependable helping of the familiar.”

Nothing about the experience was particularly innovative or eye-opening.

But for anyone looking for the experience they picture when they hear ‘Call of Duty’,

there is enough here to satisfy.

You get a variety of weapons, operations that adapt to different situations, and a range of vehicles and their mounted weapons to use.

“Every weapon and vehicle in the world at your fingertips? Wow! Best game ever!” Well, not quite.

There is only so much campaign content you can fit into a “mere” 8 hours of playtime.

Still, I think they have packed in plenty without compromising the atmosphere or making anything feel out of place.

The story is not so groundbreaking that it makes the game impossible to pass up, either.

It flows reasonably well, with some oddly true-to-life Korean characters and depictions of military life as a bonus.

The game does seem to attract a few… less-than-flattering labels at times,

but having played it myself, I do not think there is much cause for concern.

Taking it as I would any other game, and simply getting immersed in it and its characters,

I, at least, did not find anything particularly off-putting.

Conclusion: ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’ is fun. I cannot confidently call it good value for money, but it is worth a playthrough. It has just the right length and enough entertainment to make setting aside a weekend to finish it feel worthwhile.
