Football Game Terms That Confuse FC Online Beginners, Explained Through Forum Language

This content was created as part of NEXON PEAK activities.

If you are new to FC Online, a useful starting point is learning the abbreviations used in player recommendations and guides. Descriptions of the same player can mean different things depending on their upgrade level and how they feel to control. Some transfer market terms also have completely different meanings in other games.

In this post, I have put together a beginner's guide to football game terminology, with example sentences based on common forum expressions. It should help you understand everything from player recommendations to transfer market advice and match guides.

1. Terms Used in Player Recommendations

I'm looking to switch from a silver card to a gold card. Do I need to go all the way to platinum? Any recommendations for salary-efficient players?

At first glance, this might seem to be about card colours and prices, but it is actually a question about upgrade levels and squad building.

Term

Definition

Silver card

Usually refers to a +5 card. The silver card colour covers upgrade levels 5–7.

Gold card

Usually refers to a +8 card. The gold card colour covers upgrade levels 8–10.

Platinum card

Refers to cards at upgrade levels 11–13.

Salary

A cost value you must account for to keep your squad within its budget. It is not a wage paid out of your in-game currency every day.

Salary efficiency

Good performance relative to salary cost. This is different from value for money, which refers to performance relative to price.

In plain terms, the example means: “I want to replace a +5 player with a +8 version. I am wondering whether an even higher upgrade level is necessary, and I am looking for players who do their job at a low salary cost.”

In conversation, silver and gold cards can refer either to the upgrade levels most commonly associated with them or to the entire colour range. For an accurate comparison, check the upgrade number too, such as +5 or +8.

It's handy that he's two-footed, but he feels a bit heavy to control. I should probably check agi/bal and turning lag, not just spd/acc.

This example describes how a player feels to control.

Term

Definition

Two-footed

Usually refers to a player with a weak foot rating of 5. It means the player can use both feet effectively.

One-footed

A term for a player who performs differently with their strong foot and their weak foot.

Feel

How a player moves and responds when you control them.

Turning lag

A sluggish or delayed turning motion when a player changes direction.

Spd/acc

Shorthand for speed and acceleration together.

Agi/bal

Shorthand for agility and balance together.

Simply put, the assessment is: “He is easy to use with either foot, but feels sluggish when changing direction. Running stats alone are not enough to judge a player.”

Feel is not represented by a single official stat. Opinions can vary depending on play style and control setup, so a player who “feels good” will not necessarily suit everyone.

2. Terms Used in the Transfer Market

I like how he plays, but I'm hesitant because he's bound. There are so many blue lights that I'm not sure I could sell him later.

If you have played other RPGs, you might understand “bound” to mean an item that cannot be traded. On FC Online forums, however, it often refers to a player who can be listed for sale but is difficult to sell because there are no buyers.

Term

Definition

Bound

A community term for a player who takes a long time to sell because there are too few buyers.

Red light

Refers to pending orders to buy a player.

Blue light

Refers to pending orders to sell a player.

The example means: “He seems to perform well in matches, but so many people are trying to sell him that switching to another player later could be difficult.”

Do not read red and blue lights as signs of rising and falling prices, as you might in the stock market. Here, they indicate pending buy or sell orders.

This is why recommendation posts consider whether a player is bound. They assess not only how well the player performs now, but also whether you can sell them and bring in someone else later.

3. Match Guide and Training Coach Terms

Don't just look for finesse shots through the middle. Try going down the wing and using cutbacks too.

Match guides use a mix of move names and keyboard inputs. A typical example is referring to a finesse shot by a shortened name or simply as ZD.

Term

Definition

ZD / Finesse shot

Refers to a curling shot. With the default keyboard settings, press Z and D together.

QW

A lobbed through pass that sends the ball through the air into space ahead.

ZQW

An input using Z, Q, and W together. Earlier official guides described it as a driven cross, and it is also called a whipped cross.

Cutback

A pass played backwards into central space from deep down the wing.

The first example means: “Rather than only trying finesse shots through the middle, try breaking through down the wing and then passing back to an oncoming teammate.”

You may also see people say they “use QW and ZQW for different situations.” The two require different inputs, and ZQW also appears in discussions of crosses from the wing into the middle. Still, older descriptions alone are not a reason to assume that ZQW always sends the ball lower and faster.

The controls above use the default keyboard settings. If you have remapped your keys or use a controller, the inputs will differ.

For my TC, I'm using Physical and First-touch. Should I add Fast-tempo too?

For a newcomer, it can be hard to tell whether these are move names or player names. Here, TC means training coach, and the rest are shortened names for training coach traits.

Term

Definition

TC

Short for training coach. Assign one to a player to gain the benefits of their traits.

First-touch

Short for the “Move Immediately After First Touch” trait.

Physical

Short for the “Skilled Physical Contest” trait.

Fast-tempo

Short for the “Fast-Tempo Attack” trait.

Written out in full, the example means: “I am using Skilled Physical Contest and Move Immediately After First Touch as my training coach traits, and I am considering adding Fast-Tempo Attack too.”

It also helps to distinguish a first touch from the shortened trait name First-touch. A first touch is the initial contact when receiving the ball, while First-touch is shorthand for a specific training coach trait.

This does not mean the combination is the right choice for every player. The traits you need depend on the role you give the player. Learning what the abbreviations mean is a useful first step towards understanding other people's recommendations.

Closing Thoughts

That wraps up this glossary of football game terms and gaming jargon for FC Online beginners. You do not need to memorise every abbreviation at once. Looking up unfamiliar terms as you come across them in player recommendations and guides will make those posts much easier to follow.
