The terms I found confusing when I first started FC ONLINE—and how I built a team without even knowing what “salary” meant

Hello, I'm 꽤돼.
When I first started playing FC Online, I came across more confusing terms than I'd expected.
In particular, I had no idea what “salary” meant, and I couldn't quite understand why the same player had different cards for each season.
Since I mostly played league matches (against bots) at first, I didn't give much thought to how I put my squad together.
I was happy just picking players I liked and enjoying the matches.
But after a friend put a team together for me, I gradually began to learn about systems I hadn't known existed.
Building Teams Before I Understood Salary
FC Online

When I first started playing FC Online, I thought high stats were all that made a player good.
I knew basic terms like BP and OVR, of course, but I paid no attention to salary.
I suppose that was because I mostly played league matches (against bots), so I rarely had to consider the salary cap when building a team.
Then a friend put a team together for me.

That was when I first came to understand what salary meant.
Simply put, salary in FC Online is a value assigned to each player. In modes with a salary cap, you have to build your squad within that limit.
Until then, I'd thought I could simply pick players with high stats. Now I realized I also needed to think about how to allocate salary across positions.
Looking back, it's a little surprising that I'd played so much FC Online without knowing about such a basic system.
Why Does the Same Player Have So Many Seasons?
FC Online

Player seasons were just as confusing to me as salary.
In FC Online, the same player can have cards from several different seasons. At first, I thought I could just choose the card with the highest stats, but once I started building teams, I found there was more to consider than I'd expected.
I found the idea of a single-season team particularly confusing.
The name suggested you needed 11 players from the same season. But when I looked at other people's squads, some had 10 players from the same season and a goalkeeper from a different one.
At first, I wondered what difference that made.
As it turned out, building a squad in FC Online meant considering not just player seasons, but also Team Color requirements, salary, and player stats.
Even with a single-season team built around players from a specific class, the lineup can vary depending on the requirements for the Team Color being applied.
Knowing the definitions alone wasn't enough for me to understand how all of this worked.
That understanding came gradually, as I looked at other players' squads and built teams myself.
Fullbacks and Wingbacks: Similar Positions I Used to Mix Up
FC Online

Beyond squad-building terms, I also occasionally had to look up the difference between fullbacks and wingbacks.
To be honest, I'm not a huge football fan.
Still, I'd occasionally watched the World Cup and football streams, so I knew basic tactical terms like runs in behind, cutbacks, and build-up play.
But I sometimes mixed up fullbacks and wingbacks, with their similar names and positions on the flanks.
As I understood it, the players on either side of a back four were fullbacks. Yet on streams or in the game, those players were sometimes called wingbacks.
When I looked it up, I learned that fullbacks are usually the wide defenders in a back four, while wingbacks mainly play in a back-three system, taking on both defensive and attacking duties along the flanks.
The two terms are sometimes used interchangeably in Korea, though, so I could see why I'd found them confusing.
Here's a brief overview of the terms I found confusing while playing FC Online.
|
Term |
Meaning |
|
Salary |
A cost value assigned to each player when building a squad |
|
OVR (Overall) |
A player's overall rating |
|
Single-season team |
A team built around players from a specific class |
|
Team Color |
An effect on stats applied when certain conditions are met, such as players having played for the same team |
|
Fullback |
A wide defender |
|
Wingback |
A wide player who contributes extensively to both defense and attack |
Looking back, I don't think I'd have enjoyed FC Online for as long as I have if my friend hadn't explained salary to me.
Before that, I built teams with players I liked without giving it much thought. Once I understood systems like salary and Team Color, I gradually began to see why other people chose particular players.
Even now, I still look things up when I'm unsure about something like player card seasons or positions.
Alongside football terminology, FC Online has plenty of terms for its own systems, so I can imagine newcomers finding some of them confusing.
Rather than trying to memorize every term at the start, I think it's fine to learn them one at a time as you play, just as I did.
That's all from 꽤돼.
