FC Online Shooting Practice: How Practicing the Basics Improved My Shooting

[This post was created as part of NEXON PEAK activities.]

Hello, I'm 꽤돼.

In FC Online, I mostly play Manager Mode, friendly matches, and league matches (against bots).

When I first started playing FC Online, one of the things I struggled with most was shooting.

I was fairly comfortable passing the ball around to create attacking opportunities, but when I took a shot in front of goal, the ball often went in the wrong direction or straight at the goalkeeper.

In this post, I'll share how the basic training drills in the FC Online Play Guide helped me work on the problems I was having with shot direction and power control.

Why Shooting in FC Online Was Harder Than I Expected

When I first started playing FC Online, I did not find it particularly difficult to pass through the opposition's defense and get in front of goal.

The problem was finishing the chances I had worked hard to create.

At the time, I did not really understand how to control the direction of my shots.

I had a habit of holding down the same directional keys when shooting that I had been using to move my player. That meant I kept holding a diagonal direction even when I needed to change my inputs to send the ball where I wanted.

I also struggled to control the shot power gauge, so I often shot straight at the goalkeeper or sent the ball in a direction I had not intended.

With the results varying from shot to shot, I initially wondered whether my players' stats were the problem. Eventually, though, I realized I needed to get a proper grasp of the basic shooting controls first.

Using the Basic Training Drills in the Play Guide

Practicing Shooting in FC Online: The Difference Basic Training Made

The resource I used most to work on my shooting was the basic training section of the FC Online Play Guide.

Before that, I would often just press shoot whenever a chance came up in a match. In basic training, I started working through the fundamentals one at a time, from aiming my shots to getting a feel for how much to fill the power gauge.

I practiced repeatedly, focusing on which directional keys to press when shooting and how far to fill the gauge to get the shot I wanted.

Alongside the in-game basic training, I also looked up plenty of YouTube videos explaining shooting techniques.

I was surprised by how many controls I had not known about.

Shot Type

Keyboard Controls

Description

Normal shot

D

The most basic shot

Low shot

D → D

A shot that keeps the ball low

Finesse shot

Z + D

A shot that uses spin to curl the ball

Chip shot

Q + D

A shot that lifts the ball over the goalkeeper

Flair shot

C + D

Triggers an acrobatic shooting animation depending on the situation

Header

D when the ball is in the air

A shot that uses the head to send the ball toward goal

Downward header

D → D when the ball is in the air

Directs a header downward

Fake shot

D → S + directional keys

A move that tricks defenders by faking a shot

The DD and CD shots stood out to me in particular.

DD produces a low shot, keeping the ball close to the ground, while CD produces a flair shot, which can trigger acrobatic moves such as bicycle kicks depending on the situation.

At first, I only knew about normal shots and finesse shots. Through basic training and YouTube videos, I discovered there were more ways to shoot than I had expected.

I used to rush to press D whenever a shooting chance came up. Now, I choose a shot type to suit the situation and pay attention to both my aim and the power gauge.

From Basic Training to Matches: How My Shooting Changed

The biggest improvement I noticed after repeating the basic training drills was being able to hit the ball with power in the direction I wanted.

Before, I would often get a shooting chance only to send the ball completely off target because I had not controlled my directional inputs or the power gauge properly.

Now, I make a conscious effort to aim my shots and control the power gauge so I can send the ball where I want.

Of course, I still do not score with every shot. But I can feel a difference compared with when I used to miss chances simply because I did not know the controls.

Looking back, I think my struggles with shooting in FC Online came more from not understanding the basic controls than from a lack of practice alone.

If, like me, you are comfortable creating chances through passing but struggle to finish them, the basic training drills in the Play Guide may be worth trying instead of simply playing match after match.

What helped me was watching YouTube videos to learn the controls, practicing them in basic training, and then trying them out in matches.

That's all from 꽤돼.
