[MapleStory/New Player] A Guide to Styling Content for Customizing Your Character

This post was created as part of Nexon PEAK activities.

Hello.

One of the most common ways to customize your character in a game is through cosmetic items. MapleStory has a huge number of cosmetic items that have been released over the years, and new ones continue to be added on a regular basis. Because of that, many players enjoy character styling just as deeply and consistently as any other part of the game while building a look that feels uniquely their own.

That said, for players who are just getting started, it can be a bit difficult to figure out what each category includes. In this post, I organized the information so that you can review the overall system from that perspective in one place. I also included the basic details for each category below so you can look through them together.

Q: Where can I preview how cosmetic items look when equipped?

Since an item's icon does not always match its actual in-game appearance perfectly, it is a good idea to check the real sprite version before buying it. At the moment, these are the main ways to preview items.

  • Maple Auction: use the preview function

Maple Auction preview

  • Cash Shop: use the preview function; after the revamp, you can preview almost every item simply by clicking it

Cash Shop preview

  • Test World: use the test items provided when it opens, and preview items that will be added to the live server the following week

You can also check item lists through the release notes, and for Boutique Gift and Master Label in particular, Test World sometimes lets you do more than just preview them—you can actually try them on in advance.

Meaegi Dressing Room

A major advantage of this site is that you do not need to log into the game, and you can also check event items in addition to cash items.

Q: What are the [Cash Shop] and [Adventure Coin Shop]?

Cash Shop screen

Cosmetic items that have been sold since the early days of the game are still available through the Cash Shop.

With the recent Mileage revamp, Mileage was split into Maple Credit and Adventure Coins, and the Adventure Coin Shop was added as a result. You can buy items there as well. However, it does not carry every item; it appears to focus mainly on top-selling ones. Also, previews are not available in the Adventure Coin Shop, so you will need to use the Cash Shop for that.

Q: What is Royal Style (Special Label / regular Royal / Master Label)?

Royal Style

If you had to name MapleStory's signature cosmetic draw item, it would be Royal Style. When opened, Royal Style gives either regular cosmetic items or Special Label items according to fixed probabilities, and it is updated with a new lineup every month. The lineup is structured as follows.

  • Special Label: updated every month with a new themed generation (currently the 167th generation)

  • New items: new themed items added each month, also commonly called regular Royal items

  • Existing items: randomly selected re-releases from past items other than Special Label

  • Master Label: can be obtained with a certain probability by combining Special Label and Red Label through Premium Masterpiece

Special Label example

Special Label item icons

The most iconic part of this system is Special Label, which gets a new generation every month. These items have an S on the icon, come out in a wide range of monthly themes, and once their sales period ends, they can no longer be obtained from Royal Style. After that, they remain obtainable through Premium Masterpiece fusion, but only up to the previous 6 generations of Special Label items.

Old label market price

Because of this, much older releases are often referred to as old labels, and they can trade at very high prices. As shown above, players who become especially interested in a specific item still buy them even now.

Special Label collection reward

If you equip every part of a Special Label set, you can receive an event reward. That reward is themed to match each generation's outfit concept, and recently it has been standardized as a chair. This reward is also only available during the relevant sales period, when the quest can be completed and the reward claimed.

Regular Royal items

Alongside that, there are also the items commonly called regular Royal items, meaning everything that is not a Special Label item.

Monthly regular Royal lineup

Some of these items are newly released each month, and like Special Label, they also follow their own themes. However, they do not have set effects or collection rewards. You can check the list of newly released items in the notices and on the event page.

Past items are also included in the lineup. In practice, this part is essentially random, so if an item from a very long time ago suddenly gets re-released, prices can change sharply. In extreme cases, I have seen items that had not returned for a long time go over 10 billion Mesos just before their re-release.

Rare re-released item

Rare item price example

Items like these generally have fairly low odds. A well-known example is Round Glasses. Similar items with a similar feel have been released since then, but it still remains expensive.

Master Label example

Master Label set

The last major Royal Style-related category is Master Label. Unlike Special Label, it rotates once every 9 to 10 months, and the current run is the 20th generation. Matching outfits and hair coupons are released alongside it as well.

You can obtain it with a certain probability by combining Special Label and Red Label through Premium Masterpiece. Since covering the full details would go beyond the scope of this article, I will refer you to the official guide for more information.

Master Label collection reward

Master Label has a distinct feel from Special Label, with each generation released in its own style, and its collection rewards can include a black-and-white wig, a chair, and a face coupon.

Master Label Plus

It had already served as so-called combat wear before, but after the revamp, that role became even more pronounced with the release of the cash item Master Label Plus. You can find the detailed information at that link.

Q: What is Boutique Gift?

Boutique GiftBoutique Gift item pool

Boutique Gift is a cash item released once every 3 months. When you open it, you can obtain Boutique Tickets based on probability, and those tickets can then be exchanged for items. In the past, the ticket name changed by season, but it now appears to have been unified under Boutique Ticket. During the previous season, one Boutique Ticket was priced at around 40 million Mesos.

Boutique Ticket exchange titlesBuff title exchange costs

One notable point about Boutique Ticket exchange items is that this is where buff titles are released first of all, with 80 and 45 tickets required respectively.

Boutique-exclusive cosmetic itemStar Effect example

There are also cosmetic items that can only be obtained through Boutique Gift, including highly valued items such as Star Effect. You can check the most recent Boutique Ticket exchange lineup here.

Unique Boutique Gift item example

Another distinctive point is that the lineup can include unusual items in formats that had not appeared before. The small customization change shown above—letting you place a dot exactly where you want—was also released through this system.

The number of tickets required and the exchange lineup may differ the next time it is released, so it is important to check in advance. This can also be previewed in Test World. The most likely date is 10/15 (Thu), and it is highly likely to be released with a Halloween theme.

Q: What are the Illustration Collection / Golden Hands & Silver Hands packages?

These are cash packages released on a regular schedule, and they include the following categories.

  • Golden Hands & Silver Hands Collection: released once a year in the first summer update

Golden Hands & Silver Hands Collection

The Golden Hands & Silver Hands Collection is made up of winning entries from past user design contests. It has been released once each year during the first summer update in June. It consists of an outfit package, hair & face coupons, and a pet package, and you can check the detailed item lists through the links above.

Overall, these packages have remained consistently well received.

  • Illustration Collection: released once a year during the first summer and winter updates

Illustration Collection

As the name suggests, the Illustration Collection is a package based on official illustrations. Outfit packages and hair & face coupons are sold separately.

A representative example is the Hero illustration and the matching Hero package shown here. The adaptation is done quite well. There are versions for all jobs, and there are also packages based on the appearances of boss monsters. These two lines are released together, and when a new job or new boss is added, that case is added and sold as well. Since there are many of them, I separated the links into the table below.

Q: When are hair and face coupons updated?

Premium Hair and Face Coupon

First, for Premium Coupons, the list of hair and face options available when using the coupon is refreshed with each monthly update. You can check the most recent update list through the link.

Monthly Premium Coupon lineup

Each month, 1 new hair option and 1 new face option are added, while the remaining 9 are reassembled at random from existing lineups. There is no fixed schedule for exactly what appears when.

Popular lineup coupon example

For especially popular lineups, the items are sometimes grouped together like this and sold separately as their own coupon.

Choice Coupon exampleChoice Coupon lineup

For Choice Coupons, the lineup is structured the same way as Premium Coupons, but the refresh cycle is much longer and not fixed. The most recent interval was 4 months, and since then it still has not been updated.

Distinctive Choice Coupon lineup

As you can see, Choice Coupons tend to focus, to put it kindly, on especially distinctive options.

  • You can check the probability-related information mentioned in this post here.
