The Benefits of the Official MapleStory Guide for Beginners

This post was created as part of Nexon PEAK activities.
Hello.
Every game has an official website, and most also provide official guides. In practice, many people now look for information through communities, blogs, wikis, and especially video platforms such as YouTube, and there are certainly cases where that is the more efficient option.
However, while writing this article and looking through them more closely, I found that official guides do have clear strengths of their own. Given that these guides are designed with new players in mind, they can be genuinely helpful if a beginner skims them once before starting, both for later gameplay and for understanding the game more broadly, and even for non-beginners, they are useful when you want dry, neatly organized information.
In this article, I would like to discuss that point using the guide on the official MapleStory website.
Advantage 1: Because it starts from the absolute basics, it is very well structured for beginners to skim once before starting the game

To begin with, the current official MapleStory guide page is organized into categories like the ones shown above.

If you click the basic guide, it walks you through each topic in sequence, starting from the very beginning with launching the game and creating a character, as shown above.
Because this information is written so that even users who are encountering online games for the first time through MapleStory can follow it, experienced players may well think, “Do they really need to explain even this?” Even so, that is precisely why information that feels too obvious to veteran players can still be worth reviewing at least once for beginners.

For example, the rules for entering a character name are the sort of thing you only need to check once, but because other sources usually do not bother explaining them, they are still useful to glance over. In fact, community posts and YouTube guide videos also have to consider length, so it is not very realistic for them to cover details like this as well.

In that sense, detailed menu-by-menu explanations like these in the interface tab also have value. MapleStory is a 2D side-scrolling game, so the overall design is intuitive, but because so much information has accumulated over time, it is still easy to feel lost when logging in for the first time.

At that stage, I think there is a meaningful difference between going into the game after reading these detailed category-by-category explanations once and going in without them, especially in terms of how easily later information is absorbed.

Also, for topics that merit more detailed coverage, the guide includes links that take you directly to the relevant page.

Settings menus like this are also somewhat awkward to introduce as standalone topics unless they are being mentioned as part of update news, so they are worth checking once through the official guide.

This is the shortcut table attached to that guide, and I actually learned about the chat shortcuts at the bottom through this article for the first time..

Because it covers even the most basic information in this way, looking through it once can reduce the number of points where you get stuck later, both during gameplay and when searching for other information. Even the question above about materials for Guild Castle decorations appears fairly often in communities, but if you had already seen this part of the guide, you would likely recognize it as “an item related to guild content” and move on.
Advantage 2: It is quite useful when you want dry, neatly organized information

In addition, these guides contain no side commentary at all, so in most cases they consist strictly of feature explanations and organized numerical data, which makes them quick to check. That becomes particularly useful when what you want is cleanly arranged information.
-
Example) Values for each Link Skill by level

-
Example) SP gained according to points earned in the guild content Underground Waterway

-
Example) Maple Union character effects

-
Example) Probability rates for Royal Style item pools and Aran's Ring Box in the probability-based item menu

-
Example) Criteria for obtaining exploration coins

Of course, you can find this kind of information elsewhere through a search as well, but when you simply want to check the numbers themselves, being able to pull them up just by clicking through the tabs, without a separate search, is a clear advantage in terms of speed and convenience.
Points to keep in mind when using it
That concludes my discussion of the guide on the official MapleStory website. As mentioned above, if you are a true beginner, I do think it will definitely help to at least skim through it once from the beginning, even if you do not read it line by line. At the same time, what I also want to emphasize in closing is that I would not, of course, recommend playing the game while relying on only the “official guide”.

To begin with, I did confirm that new guides are being added for newly released content, but among older entries there were also some sections that appeared not to have been revised.

A representative example is the Maple Coin Exchange Shop shown above, which is content that has now been removed entirely. Points like this need to be cross-checked alongside other sources of information. That said, more important sections such as Ability and Soul Weapon had been kept up to date.
In addition, beyond the dry explanations, there is some extra material presented as tips, but since this is still the official website, it does not actively tell you what to do and how to do it in the same hands-on way that external platforms often do. That part can be learned through other articles or videos, and the material you saw here will clearly help with understanding at that stage, so I hope you will use them together for a more comfortable gameplay experience.
Thank you for reading.
