Mabinogi Mobile — Why Its Story Pulls You In
곤류

This post was created as part of Nexon PEAK activities.

There were quite a few moments while playing Mabinogi Mobile when I found myself really pulled into the story.
The big turning points in the main story obviously matter,
but I also really enjoyed learning how the NPCs in each town are connected,
and it was especially interesting when groups that seemed minor at first later turned out to tie back into the main plot.
There are still unresolved threads too, which naturally makes me curious about where the story goes next.
So this time, I wanted to talk about the NPC relationships that stood out to me, the story of Dragonhood, and a few of the lingering mysteries that still haven't been explained in Mabinogi Mobile.
⚠ Spoiler Warning ⚠
This post contains discussion of Mabinogi Mobile's setting and story.
👀 Wait, these two were connected like that?

If you pay attention to the NPCs in town, a surprising number of them turn out to be family, lovers, or even tied together through teacher-student relationships.
You can pick up on those connections through the part-time jobs they offer and their dialogue,
and in some cases, separate character quests let you see those stories in a lot more detail.

In Tir Chonaill, Nora and Noah are siblings, while Lassar and Alissa are sisters.
In Dunbarton, Walter and Eira are father and daughter, and Glenis and Flora are mother and daughter.
In Bangor, Aodhan and Eileen are grandfather and granddaughter, and Bryce and Evy are also father and daughter.
Del and Delen of Emain Macha are twin sisters, and in Mabinogi Mobile there's also the added setting that Esras is Tii's older sister.

There are a lot of romantic connections too.
Cadan and Tii, Tarlach and Kristell, Malcolm and Nora, Dilis and Trevoir,
Eira and Stewart, and Shaun and Evy are some of the more notable ones.
It's also fun once you realize that Aodhan's students are Fergus, Armis, and Eileen,
and that Simon's student is Eleonora.

Out of all of them, the one that stayed with me the most was Tarlach and Kristell.
Kristell, who was originally the succubus of Rabbie Dungeon,
fell in love with Tarlach when he came to defeat her,
and in the end gave up her original form, disguised herself as a human, and became a priest who believed in Morrighan...

Once you start learning these relationships one by one, the way you look at the town NPCs changes a little too.
There's something really fun about realizing that an NPC you used to walk past without much thought is actually someone's family member, someone's love interest, or someone who learned their craft from another NPC.
📖 When the foreshadowing starts to connect

At first, I really didn't think Dragonhood was all that important.
When you first run into them on the way to Dunbarton, they show up as a dragon-worshipping group,
sometimes getting in the player's way or appearing as a suspicious faction in part-time job requests.
But early on, they don't seem to have much impact on the bigger story and mostly come off as enemies you can deal with pretty easily.
So every time Dragonhood appeared, I kept thinking, who are these people supposed to be, and why do they keep showing up?

But that changed as the story continued through Advent of the Goddess Chapters 3 to 5.
Dragonhood aids Esras, the villain of Advent of the Goddess Chapter 3, and is also connected to Baba, the Witch of the Wasteland.
In the process, it comes out that they learned necromancy, were trying to resurrect the dragon they worship,
and planned to rule over Erinn.

By Advent of the Goddess Chapter 5, Dragonhood has fully stepped into the role of the main villain,
and you end up fighting them directly as they resurrect a dragon at the dragon ruins on Gairech Hill.

This was also the point where the way I saw Mabinogi Mobile's story shifted a bit.
At first, because I already knew the story of the original Mabinogi,
I felt like Mobile's own story sometimes lacked explanation and had empty spaces in its worldbuilding.
But watching Dragonhood go from an early-game group to something central to the main story across multiple chapters,
I started to feel that Mabinogi Mobile really is building a story in its own way.

When a scene you barely thought about at first later connects to a different event, it naturally brings earlier story moments back to mind.
I think that kind of continuity is a big part of what keeps me following Mabinogi Mobile's story.
🔎 So what exactly are they?

So then, what parts of the story still haven't been explained?
Personally, there are three things I'm especially curious about.

The first is the black mass that appears after you defeat the giant monster tree in the tutorial.
When you hunt monsters, black masses drop and cling to your body,
but the people around you don't seem to notice them at all, and it looks like only the adventurer can see them.
I'm still curious whether that's just a visual effect, or whether it's actually part of the setting tied to the adventurer's identity.

The second is the dark being that appears from the moment you first create your character.
At first, I assumed it was just a tutorial enemy there to teach combat after you pick up an old weapon.
But even after that, it keeps showing up again and again in different forms.

What especially sticks with me is that An, one of the Seven Crawlers, seems to be aware of these beings.
An asks whether the player is on the same side as the dark being, and when the player is surrounded, steps in and defeats them instead.
So what exactly are these things, and why do they keep following the player?

Lastly, the thing I'm most curious about is the relationship between the adventurer and the Milletian.
In the original, the player is called a Milletian, meaning someone from the stars,
and traits that set them apart from ordinary humans, like reincarnation or revival, are explained through that Milletian setting.

But in Mabinogi Mobile, the player is consistently called an adventurer.
Rebirth is still possible, and even if you fall in battle, you can stand back up again,
so how is the game going to explain those traits here?

Nao also appears not as a guide leading the Milletian, like in the original, but as a fellow adventurer traveling alongside you.
So what exactly is the player in Mabinogi Mobile?
Is this a different setting from the original Milletian concept,
or is there more to be revealed later? That's one of the things I'm still wondering about.
🧩 A story that keeps me invested
As you follow Mabinogi Mobile's story, part of the fun is learning about the relationships between the NPCs,
and part of it is seeing characters or groups from earlier sections return and connect into later story developments.
A group like Dragonhood, which initially feels like it doesn't mean much, can eventually become the main villain.
And there are still unanswered mysteries left behind too, like the black mass, the dark beings, and the adventurer's identity.
So when the next story update arrives, I'm looking forward not only to the new events, but also to seeing some of these lingering plot threads pay off.
From NPC relationships, to foreshadowing that stretches across multiple story arcs, to setting details that still haven't been revealed,
I think that gradual process of learning how everything connects is exactly why I stay so immersed in Mabinogi Mobile's story.
