If you’re looking for a game with genuinely memorable side stories, I’d recommend Mabinogi Mobile.

I’d recommend Mabinogi Mobile as a story-rich game because its NPCs’ personal histories make you grow attached to them, and those stories can make even familiar scenery feel different.
That was exactly how this side quest, “To a Friend, Gathering Memories,” felt to me. It begins as a small favor—checking on a childhood promise in someone else’s place—but by the end, the beautiful lakeside of Emain Macha feels overwhelmingly lonely.

When she was young, Shena buried a memory box with her friend in a secret spot. Today is the day they promised to meet again and open it together.
But the restaurant has a group booking, so she can’t leave. Shena asks you to go to the meeting place for her instead.

Her friend isn’t there. Instead, you find the buried box and bring it back to Shena, and inside is a letter left behind by the friend. It asks her to come to the place where they used to play at being adventurers as children.
What starts as an ordinary errand turns into a journey through the memories the two shared.
A Journey Following the Letters

At the next location, the friend still doesn’t appear. Instead, a ghost there tells you where the box is buried.
When you come back with the box, there’s another letter inside.

This time, the destination is the place where they once promised that, when they grew up, they would sing a romantic serenade.
There too, with the ghost’s help, you find the box, and the letter reveals another shared memory.

As children, the friend had jokingly asked Shena to marry them in front of the fountain. The more you read the letters, the more you start to imagine what feelings may have been behind those words from the friend she used to play adventurer with.

On paper, the structure is simple: go to a location, retrieve a box, come back. But each box holds a different story. As you follow memories of pretend adventuring, a serenade, and even a playful proposal, the time Shena and her friend spent together slowly comes into focus.

The friend’s repeated absence from each meeting place, and the ghost that keeps appearing, also start to nag at you. You keep wondering what the next box will contain, and why the friend never shows up in person.
The place named in the final letter is the lakeside the friend loved most.
A Fine Day for a Journey

When you arrive at the lakeside with Shena after she finishes work, her friend’s mother is waiting there.
She hands over a letter herself, saying her child has gone on a journey far away.

It says that although the journey is a very long one, they will surely meet again someday.

Shena feels relieved, thinking her friend must be doing well, but she still fights back tears, saying she really wanted to see them and is sad they couldn’t meet.
At that moment, the mother murmurs something to herself that Shena cannot hear.

“After suffering like that... how pitiful.”
The friend had already passed away after a long illness.
So that Shena would not grieve, they explained their absence until the very end by saying they were going on a journey.

Then the ghost who had been showing me where the boxes were calls out to me.
The ghost thanks me for helping Shena, then says goodbye, adding that it seems it’s time to leave now.

Unaware of the truth, Shena says the weather is really nice.
The mother replies that it really is clear—and cruelly enough, a fine day to set out on a journey.
They are looking at the same view, but the weight of their words is completely different. For Shena, it is a clear day that brings to mind the journey her friend has gone on. For the mother, it is the day she must let her child go. Knowing the truth, the player can only stand there and watch the conversation unfold.
Emain Macha, Seen Differently

What felt most bittersweet in this story was the contrast between a playful childhood promise and a fate that could never be treated so lightly.
The friend had loved Shena since childhood, and those feelings remained in the boxes they buried together and in the letters. But when the promised day finally came, the two could no longer sit face to face and take out those memories together.
In the end, Shena never learns the truth. There is something comforting in seeing her believe her friend is doing well, but it is also lonely to know that even their final farewell carried different meanings for each of them.

The waterside of Emain Macha, which normally just feels elegant and beautiful, looked different that day. The scenery itself had not changed. But once I knew the story left behind in that place, the emotions that same view brought up were no longer the same.
More than the moment I finished the quest and received the reward, what stayed with me was the two people left at the lakeside—and the friend who had already departed.
Closing Thoughts

Mabinogi Mobile makes you grow attached to its world through the stories its NPCs carry.
You can skip through the dialogue and just collect the rewards, but if you take a moment to listen, a simple NPC starts to feel like someone who truly lives in this world alongside you. “To a Friend, Gathering Memories” is a quest I’d especially recommend to players who want to experience that shift.
