How should a MapleStory beginner choose their first class?

When you are new to an online RPG and choosing a class, I think it helps to start with two basic questions: do you like the character’s look and concept, and do the core controls seem easy to learn?
If you feel attached to a character, that gives you a reason to keep leveling it, and if the controls are not too demanding, you have more room to learn the game’s other systems. That was true for me as well. I picked Lete in MapleStory because I liked the summon-based concept, and after raising her to level 260, I was very satisfied with how simple the core controls felt.
This time, based on my experience starting MapleStory and raising Lete, I want to organize a few useful points beginners can compare when choosing a class.
How beginners can choose a class
|
Criteria |
What to check |
My choice of Lete and experience |
|
Appearance and concept |
Whether it is a character you will still enjoy looking at over time, and whether the combat style suits your taste |
I liked her dignified, princess-like look and the concept of commanding summons |
|
Basic controls |
Whether the core skills you need for grinding are easy to understand |
I started by summoning Templar and Vargar, then using Impel |
|
Grinding convenience |
Whether repeated grinding feels manageable rather than tiring |
It was convenient that the summons would stick to distant monsters and attack them |
|
Adapting to boss fights |
Whether you can keep track of attacking and dodging at the same time |
Using summons made it easier to focus on survival |
|
Growth support |
Which events apply to your chosen character and how long they last |
I used growth events to reach level 260 quickly |
You do not need to understand every class’s pros and cons from the start.
It is usually easier to choose once you narrow things down to a few characters you like, then compare what their actual controls look like in grinding and boss fights.
Appearance and concept are important criteria too

Lete
Unless a class is seriously underperforming, I usually choose characters based on appearance first. I tend to like pretty or cute characters, so this time I was deciding between Mercedes and Ren.
In the end, though, I picked Lete. The growth support for a new class was part of the reason, but more than anything, I liked the concept of fighting while commanding stylish summons like a queen.

Looking back, I think I have always had a soft spot for summoners. A very long time ago, when I first started DNF, my first character there was also a summoner. Lete also has that dignified, princess-like atmosphere, which suited my taste well.
That kind of personal preference is a perfectly valid standard when choosing a class. Even if other people say a class is good, if I am not interested in the character or the way it fights, I am less likely to want to keep raising it.

Mercedes and Ren are still on my shortlist, and I will probably end up considering them again when I make my next sub-character.
How easily can you learn the basic controls?

Summon Templar + Vargar
Repeat Impel
One thing I liked while raising Lete was how simple the core basics felt early on. I started without looking up a separate guide, but I still did not run into any major issues while grinding.
The setup I used most while grinding to level 260 was summoning Templar and Vargar, then using Impel. At first, understanding those three things was enough to keep progressing.
What felt especially convenient was that even if there was some distance between my character and a monster, the summons would close in and attack on their own. It almost felt like being a princess who only had to lift a finger. I liked that the image I had in mind when I chose the class really came through in actual play.

When beginners look at control difficulty, it makes more sense to focus on the skills you will actually repeat right away rather than the total number of skills on the class. In practice, that means checking which buttons you press while grinding, whether attacking while moving feels comfortable, and how many things need constant attention.
Of course, being able to start basic grinding easily and getting the maximum performance out of a class are two different things. Lete also has active skills that make her summons use stronger attacks or receive buffs. At first, it is enough to learn the basics, then gradually expand what you use as you become more comfortable with the class.
Look at grinding and boss fights separately

Just because a class feels comfortable in grinding does not mean boss fights will feel the same. In boss fights, you have to attack while dodging patterns, so it also matters whether the controls leave you enough room to manage both.
In the boss fights I played, I kept my summons out and used Impel about once every 8 seconds, then spent the rest of the time moving with survival as my priority. Because I had less to think about on the attack side, I could focus more on avoiding the boss’s patterns, and clearing felt a little easier as a result.
This was simply the approach I used as a beginner so I could focus on dodging. It does not mean using Impel only once every 8 seconds is the optimal attack method. When I had more room to spare, I also mixed in other active skills, and in those cases I was able to clear faster.

Until the day I challenge Meirin
Even when you watch class showcases or gameplay videos, it helps to look at grinding footage and boss-fight footage separately. Depending on whether you prefer the feel of clearing wide areas comfortably or chaining multiple skills on a boss, the class that appeals to you may be different.
At least in the range I experienced, being able to rely on summons while focusing on dodging made Lete feel easier to approach as a beginner.
View growth support separately from class performance

My Lete is currently level 260. After reaching level 200 in about 30 minutes with Hyper Blink, I completed the 5th job advancement and Arcane Force-related quests, then kept grinding. After that, I reached level 260 and also finished the 6th job advancement and Authentic Force-related quests.
By my estimate, getting to level 260 took around 3 to 4 hours. I am also a new player, so I was looking things up as I went, which means this is not a precise timed record, but I still reached the next growth stage faster than I expected.

Growth events played a big part in that speed. Hyper Burning MAX supports growth up to level 260 by adding 4 extra levels to each level-up, for a total gain of 5 levels at a time. After that, you can separately designate Burning BEYOND to receive a 1+1 level-up benefit up to level 280. The related event runs until 11:59 PM on September 16, 2026.

Lete-exclusive mission rewards are also hard to ignore
Because of that, it would be difficult to say all of that fast leveling speed came purely from Lete’s performance. It makes more sense to separate the part that felt comfortable because of the class itself from the part where event support shortened the time needed to grow.
Beginners should do the same: pick a class you like first, then check what kind of growth support applies to it. If you plan to use this event, there is not much time left before it ends, so it is worth checking the character designation and reward conditions first.
Lete is recommended for people like this

I should take my time decorating my house too
Based on my experience raising her to level 260, Lete seems like a good fit for players who like the idea of commanding summons and want a class with basic grinding controls that are easy to learn. Beginners like me, who are still not used to boss patterns and need room to focus on dodging, may also want to consider her.
On the other hand, if you enjoy constantly attacking directly or busily chaining multiple skills together, it would be worth comparing classes built around that style as well.
I chose Lete because I was drawn to her appearance and concept, and after trying her for myself, the comfortable controls made me want to keep raising her. Rather than trying to compare every class’s performance from the very beginning, I would recommend picking a few candidates you like and first checking whether the idea of repeatedly grinding with that character actually feels enjoyable to you.
