If you are new to online RPGs, start by looking at how easy a class makes it to attack, move around, and stay alive. Simple controls leave you more room to learn boss mechanics, while reliable survival tools help you keep going even when you make mistakes.

MapleStory has so many classes that the character creation screen can feel overwhelming at first. In this article, I will share my class recommendations for beginners and explain what to look for when choosing one, drawing on my own experience getting into MapleStory.

1. My MapleStory Background

I gave MapleStory a try in the summer of 2025, leveling the new class Ren in Challenger World Season 2. I reached level 280 and transferred to a regular world, but took a break from the game afterward.

This summer, I started leveling 레테 in Challenger World Season 4 and returned to leveling my Ren as well. My Ren is currently level 289, my 레테 is level 285, and I am just about to reach a Legion level of 8,000.

Back in 2022, I also played in Reboot World and reached a Legion level of 8,869. In a sense, I have found my footing in MapleStory as a beginner on 2 separate occasions.

I still clearly remember what I struggled with and what made things easier when I was starting out. Those experiences form the basis of my recommendations.

2. Class Recommendations at a Glance

When recommending a class, I focus on difficulty, mobility and survivability, and long-term enjoyment. Even a powerful class can be hard to stick with if you struggle to land attacks or do not enjoy its controls.

Here, burst damage refers to a window in which you use your powerful skills together, while sustained damage refers to the steady attacks you use while those skills are on cooldown. As a beginner, it is worth considering not just theoretical damage output, but also how easily you can keep attacking in an actual boss fight.

3. 레테

My first recommendation is the mage class 레테, released this summer.

레테 attacks using summons. When leveling the class, I particularly appreciated how the summons kept attacking while I dodged the boss's attacks. Beginners can easily miss opportunities to deal sustained damage while focusing on survival, but 레테 makes that less of a concern.

The class also has a range of mobility and survival tools. These include teleportation, jump teleports, diagonal teleports, and the ability to hover in midair, along with Ethereal Form and ways to gain status effect immunity. Together, they give you plenty of options when you are in danger.

With good damage output and a straightforward cycle of full and smaller bursts, 레테 is a class I can comfortably recommend to anyone learning boss fights for the first time.

If I had to name a drawback, it would be how easy it is to get used to that convenience. I noticed the difference myself while playing both 레테 and Ren. If you start with 레테 and then level another class, the step up in difficulty can be quite noticeable.

4. Aran

Next is Aran. I recommend this class to anyone who wants straightforward gameplay but still enjoys taking a hands-on approach to movement and attacks.

Aran packs its burst damage into a short window and has solid baseline damage as well. If you want mobility and satisfying combat without overly complicated controls, Aran is a good fit.

Freud's Wisdom, a skill that grants long-lasting invincibility, also became much easier to use with this year's patch. After activating it, press it again within 90 seconds to gain 30 seconds of invincibility. The cooldown is 4 minutes. You no longer need to build up multiple stacks, making it easier to time the skill for important attack windows.

Still, although the class is straightforward to play, its controls will not suit everyone. If you expect it to feel as comfortable as 레테, you may find Aran relatively awkward.

5. Ren and Bowmaster

Classes built around rapid-fire skills, such as Ren and Bowmaster, are also good options. These skills attack continuously while you hold down a key and allow you to move while attacking. This makes dodging boss mechanics easier and keeps the controls comfortable.

What I liked most about Ren was how smooth the controls felt. The class is also fairly easy to play, which helped me settle into MapleStory. I find its damage relatively underwhelming compared with the other classes covered here, but I still recommend it if you like the controls and character design.

Bowmaster, often shortened to BM, is another good class for beginners. It has excellent utility skills, including a teleport to a designated location. However, its burst damage is spread over a long window, which may be disappointing if you prefer to deal most of your damage in a short burst.

With classes like these two, simple attacks are also a matter of preference. Some players appreciate the ease of use, while others may find the gameplay repetitive after playing one as their main for a long time.

6. Conclusion

If you are still unsure which class to start with in MapleStory, try watching some boss fight videos. Then consider whether the character's overall style and approach to combat appeal to you.

Challenger World and leveling events make it easier to level a new class. If your first choice is not what you expected, you can use that character for Legion Champion and try another that suits you better.

There is no need to feel pressured to choose a lifelong main right from the start. As someone who is only just moving beyond the beginner stage, I wish you the best as you level your first character. This is 피스타임, signing off.
