Can an online football game be as enjoyable to watch as it is to play?

I only recently started playing FC Online, but after watching some tournament highlights, I found there was plenty to enjoy even as a beginner.

​

I enjoyed comparing the competitors’ dribbling and passing styles, while the contest for the championship brought much the same tension as watching real sports.

​

Not long ago, I played a match against the AI and worked through some basic training. I still struggle even with controlling shot power, so I was curious to see how skilled competitors play. This time, I decided to look up an FC Online tournament.

FSL SUMMER Final Stage

I watched a roughly 23-minute highlight video of the 2026 FSL SUMMER FINAL STAGE, held on September 6, 2026. The opening section, up to around 8 minutes and 30 seconds, covers the lower bracket final between kt Rolster’s UTA and T1’s Navy. The rest shows the grand final between UTA and BNK FEARX’s Light.

FSL is a league where players compete individually for the championship. In this tournament, UTA advanced through the lower bracket final before defeating Light 4:2 in sets in the grand final to claim the title. The grand final followed a best-of-7 format, with the first to win 4 sets taking the title.

What interested me was not just how a single goal could decide a match, but how the momentum shifted across multiple matches.

If you are watching for the first time, I suggest focusing on the following points one at a time.

The first thing I noticed was the contrast between the two competitors’ attacking styles. UTA impressed me with the way he used dribbling to unsettle the opposing defense and draw fouls inside the penalty area. Light, meanwhile, strung together quick, fluid passes to get close to goal in an instant.

One particularly memorable moment came around 12 minutes and 54 seconds into the video, when Light scored by using a series of passes to exploit gaps in the defense. His use of space across the pitch showed composure and confidence. When I get the ball, I tend to stop and wonder what to do next. These competitors, however, seemed to have their next move planned already.

The way UTA earned penalties was also interesting to watch. At around 9 minutes and 33 seconds and 21 minutes and 55 seconds, he drew fouls by dribbling inside the penalty area, but did not score from either penalty. Creating a clear chance was no guarantee of a goal, so I kept watching right through to the shot.

The goal that impressed me most came around 11 minutes and 58 seconds. Using Son Heung-min, UTA shot directly from a free kick out wide and curled the ball into the net. It reminded me of the real Son Heung-min’s goal straight from a corner kick, which had attracted attention some time earlier. As someone who still needs to practice controlling shot power, I wanted to develop that kind of accuracy and finishing ability.

Looking at the squads was another part of the appeal.

At first, I naturally found myself supporting UTA because he used familiar South Korean players such as Cha Bum-kun, Ahn Jung-hwan, and Son Heung-min. In Light’s squad, international stars such as Ronaldo caught my attention. Later, I also saw UTA play with a France squad featuring Mbappé and Zidane.

For football fans, simply seeing how familiar players perform in the game could be enough to make these matches worth watching.

Learning the background to the match made it even more engaging. UTA had lost to Light in their earlier encounter, but returned to the grand final through the lower bracket final and claimed the championship this time. His relentless attacking play impressed me; he seemed like a different person compared with their earlier meeting.

At around 22 minutes and 21 seconds, I could see UTA’s hands trembling as he celebrated his championship win. That moment seemed to capture both the tension of the final and the joy of winning. Beyond the impressive gameplay, being able to see the emotions of the competitor behind the controls was another reason I enjoyed watching the tournament.

Closing Thoughts

Although this was my first time watching a tournament, I found it easy to follow. The score and match time were displayed on screen, while the minimap at the bottom showed the players’ positions.

The commentators added energy while keeping track of the time elapsed and the time remaining. Even when I became absorbed in a match and lost track of time, their commentary brought the tension of the closing moments into focus.

This time, I watched the highlights uploaded on the day of the matches rather than the live broadcast. That meant I could enjoy the key moments in a short video without having to plan around the broadcast schedule.

I would recommend watching tournaments to anyone who plays FC Online and wants to learn from the competitors’ squad choices and use of the controls. Even if you do not play, they could be worth watching if you enjoy fast-paced matches featuring familiar footballers.

The next time I log in, I plan to practice creating chances through passing and choosing the right moment to shoot, rather than rushing to press the shoot button as soon as I get the ball.
