Is watching an online soccer game as fun as playing it yourself?

I only started playing FC Online recently, but after watching some tournament highlights, I found that even a beginner can enjoy them more than enough.

​

Part of the appeal was comparing each player's dribbling and passing style, and part of it was the tension of a title match, which really did feel a lot like watching a real sport.

Not long ago, I played a match against the AI and tried some basic training. I'm still at the point where even controlling shot power is difficult, so I got curious about how top players actually play and decided to look up an FC Online tournament this time.

FSL SUMMER Final Stage

The video I watched was a roughly 23-minute highlight reel from the 2026 FSL SUMMER FINAL STAGE held on September 6, 2026. The first 8 minutes and 30 seconds or so cover the lower bracket final between kt Rolster UTA and T1 Navy, and after that the video moves on to the final between UTA and BNK FEARX Light.

FSL is a league where individual players compete for the title. This time, UTA advanced through the lower bracket final and then beat Light 4:2 in sets in the final to become champion. The final was played as a best-of-seven, first-to-four-wins series.

What interested me was that you could follow not just a single goal, but the way momentum shifted over several matches.

The first thing that stood out to me was how differently the two players attacked. UTA was especially impressive in the way he shook defenders with his dribbling and drew fouls inside the penalty area. Light, by contrast, strung passes together quickly and smoothly, getting deep into the box in an instant.

The moment that stayed with me most was around 12:54, when Light scored by breaking through the gap between defenders with a series of quick passes. The way he used space so confidently made him look calm and in control. When I get the ball, I still have to think about what to do next, but the pros looked as if they had already prepared the next action too.

The way UTA earned penalty kicks was interesting too. Around 9:33 and 21:55 in the video, he drew fouls with dribbling inside the penalty area, but neither penalty kick turned into a goal. Creating a huge chance did not automatically decide the result, so I ended up watching closely all the way to the final shot.

The goal that impressed me most came around 11:58. UTA took a direct shot from a wide free kick with Son Heung-min, and the ball curled in and hit the net. It reminded me of Son Heung-min's real-life direct goal from a corner that became a big talking point. From my perspective, as someone who still needs to practice shot power first, that kind of accuracy and finishing is exactly the sort of thing I want to learn.

I also enjoyed looking at the squads.

At first, I naturally found myself rooting for UTA because he was using familiar Korean players like Cha Bum-kun, Ahn Jung-hwan, and Son Heung-min. On Light's side, overseas stars like Ronaldo stood out right away. Later, I also got to see UTA play with a France squad that included Mbappé and Zidane.

If you like soccer, I think there is already plenty to enjoy just in seeing how familiar players perform inside the game.

Knowing the background of the match made it even more immersive. UTA had lost to Light in their previous meeting, but after coming through the lower bracket final and reaching the final again, he won the championship this time. It was striking to watch him press forward so fiercely, almost like a completely different player.

Around 22:21 in the video, you can also see UTA's hands shaking during his post-win celebration. That moment seemed to convey both the tension of the final and the emotion of winning it all. Beyond the flashy game footage, being able to see the emotions of the player actually competing was another part of what made tournament viewing appealing.

Final thoughts

It was my first time watching a tournament like this, but it was not difficult to follow. The screen showed the score and match time, and the minimap at the bottom also made it easy to check player positions.

The commentators kept the energy high while also calling out the elapsed time and the time remaining. Even when I got so absorbed in the match that I lost track of time, the commentary brought back that late-game tension.

and highlight videos as well. This one was uploaded just 3 hours after the live broadcast.

This time, instead of watching live, I watched the highlights uploaded on the same day as the match. Because of that, I was able to enjoy the key moments in a short amount of time without having to match my schedule to the broadcast.

If you want ideas for squads and controls while playing FC Online, I would recommend watching tournament matches. Even if you do not play the game, I think they would still appeal to anyone who simply wants to watch fast-paced matches featuring familiar soccer players.

Next time I log into the game, instead of hurriedly pressing shoot as soon as I get the ball, I want to start by practicing how to create chances with passing and wait for the right shooting moment.
