💰 How much do you really need to spend on games for them to be fun?
🎮 I’m firmly in the camp that believes the answer is “much less than most people think.”
⏱ In the end, what mattered was not my wallet, but where I chose to spend my time.
✅ I put together a list of games I could start casually and still enjoy for a long time.

Games that felt fully enjoyable without spending heavily
Why they still felt satisfying with a light start · Why progression felt manageable · Tips for playing cost-effectively
Mainly focused on Nexon games, with a few other experiences mixed in as well.
First, I want to define what “cost-effective” means to me
To me, enjoying games cost-effectively does not mean “spending absolutely nothing.” My 기준 for a cost-effective game is closer to this.
■ My criteria for a “cost-effective game”① You can access most of the content without spending money
② If you put in the time, resources genuinely build up (your effort does not go to waste)
③ Even if you stop for a while and come back, there is still a clear path to catch up
④ Even when you do spend, it still feels like “something I chose to buy, not something I had to buy”
Put differently, if a game only opens the door to fun once you pay, then I would not call it cost-effective no matter how cheap it is. The games below are the ones that, in my experience, satisfy these four conditions fairly well.
🎮 Nexon games — titles I could start without pressure
MapleStory
Free-to-play
I get asked a lot, “It’s such an old game—isn’t it too late to start now?” But once you actually spend some time with it, the impression is quite the opposite: right now feels like one of the most generous periods for new and returning players.
The biggest reason is the Burning event series. When you create a character, leveling speed gets a substantial boost, so sections that once took months can now be cleared much more quickly. Even in summer 2026, a Burning event that supports rapid growth up through the level 280 range is running until mid-September, so starting now means you are very unlikely to hit an early progression wall.
On top of that, events consistently hand out growth materials and equipment, so simply keeping up with events diligently is enough to carry you comfortably into the midgame without spending.
💡 Cost-effective point — creating a character during an event period significantly reduces the overall cost of progression.
DNF
Free-to-play
Because the action itself is the core appeal, the feel of combat is 100% the same even if you do not pay. Personally, what made it feel especially cost-effective was the in-game economy. The loop works well: you run dungeons, buy what you need with the resources you earn, and sell unused items to turn them back into resources.
In other words, it has a structure where time translates directly into resources, so even playing a little each day naturally improves your character. There is a real sense that “I ran a few dungeons today” becomes actual value, which made it much easier to play without feeling pressured to spend.
💡 Cost-effective point — even daily content alone will build resources over time if you stay consistent. The key is not rushing into purchases.
Sudden Attack · KartRider-related titles
Free-to-play
These feel a little different by nature. In this kind of genre, skill is performance, so spending does not decide who wins and loses. Paid items are generally closer to cosmetics or convenience features, and in the end, aim and positioning sense are what matter.
They are also great for casually jumping into a few rounds with friends, and even if you return after a long break, there is no spec gap you need to catch up on. That is a major strength. For players who want something lighter, this is usually what I recommend first.
💡 Cost-effective point — the burden of returning is practically nonexistent. Even after a long break, you can jump straight back into real matches.
Mabinogi-related titles
Free-to-play
These are games where life content, rather than combat, stands as one of the main pillars. What feels distinctive is that you can spend your time on things like cooking, gathering, crafting, and music performance—activities that are not directly tied to “getting stronger.”
If your goal is not competing on specs, then the reasons to spend naturally shrink as well. I tend to think of this as “the game I turn on when I do not want to do much of anything today,” and for that kind of play, going without spending actually felt more comfortable.
💡 Cost-effective point — once you step away from the competitive side, your spending tends to drop with it.
💰 A shared Nexon tip — make use of Nexon PlayIf you play several Nexon games, the Nexon Play app is worth using. You can collect Play Points through lock screen accrual, attendance rewards, quest rewards, and more, and under the standard of 1 point = 1 cash, those points can be used for Nexon Cash purchases or item purchases. It is not a huge amount, but because it works by reducing money you would otherwise have spent, the difference is noticeable. Pre-registration events are also free to join, and the rewards do tend to arrive, so if a new game interests you, I would recommend signing up in advance.
🌍 Other games I found cost-effective to enjoy
Free giveaway games — your library can grow without spending anything
PC game stores regularly give games away for free. If you just check in each week, a surprisingly large number of titles will build up in your account over the course of a year. The real value is being able to try genres you hesitated to buy because you were not sure you would enjoy them without any pressure. I have also had a few games I claimed this way that unexpectedly held my attention for several days.
Indie games — often stronger in satisfaction per hour
They cost a fraction of what major titles do, yet their playtime and density are often just as strong, if not better. If there is a sale on top of that, you can get several days of enjoyment for the price of one or two cups of coffee. If you think of cost-effectiveness as “price ÷ time enjoyed,” this category often comes out far ahead.
Subscription services — useful for exploring your tastes
Monthly subscription services that let you try a wide range of games are often easy to get your money’s worth from, even in just a month or two. That said, the moment you slip into a “I do not have time to play, but I am still paying for the subscription” situation, it stops being cost-effective. I only use them in short bursts, when I have at least three games I want to try lined up.
🌱 Why progression felt comfortable in these games
Looking back on the games above, I noticed they shared a few traits that made it easier to grow without pressure.
|
Reason |
Explanation |
|---|---|
|
Progression acceleration systems |
If there is a system like a Burning event that shortens the entire early-game stretch for new and returning players, the burden of getting started drops substantially. |
|
Time = resources |
If playtime turns into actual resources, spending becomes a way to “save time,” not a required condition. |
|
Density of event rewards |
If a game can carry you into the midgame just by keeping up with events, there is little reason to spend unnecessarily. |
|
The freedom to step away from competition |
The moment you decide not to worry about rankings or competition, spending drops sharply. In truth, this was the biggest variable. |
💡 Tips for playing cost-effectively
-
Start during event periods. Even in the same game, the early experience can feel completely different depending on when you begin. Simply creating a character while progression support events are active gives you a major advantage.
-
Delay your first purchase by at least a week. Most of the impulses that make you feel like “I should buy this right now” fade after a few days. If you still want it after that, then it is probably something you genuinely need.
-
Keep daily content short, but consistent. In many games, 30 minutes every day is much better for accumulating resources than spending 8 hours all at once over the weekend.
-
Clear out assets you are not using. If the game has a trading system, then items left sitting in storage are effectively resources.
-
Turn on point and accrual channels. With systems like Play Points in Nexon Play, there is little reason not to collect rewards tied to actions you were going to do anyway.
-
Set just one goal. “I want to do everything” is what tends to create spending. If you decide, “Just this one thing for this month,” both your mind and your wallet feel lighter.
📌To sum it up
-
MapleStory — if you start during a Burning event season, the burden of early progression almost disappears
-
DNF — because time turns into resources, even a little progress each day adds up
-
Sudden Attack · KartRider-related titles — genres where skill is performance, with virtually no burden when returning
-
Mabinogi-related titles — with life content at the center, stepping away from competition also lowers spending
-
Shared tip — start during event periods · delay your first purchase by a week · make sure to collect Nexon Play points

I think the most expensive resource in games is not money, but time.
If the amount of time is the same, then spending it on what brings you more enjoyment—that, to me, is real cost-effectiveness.
