[PEAK Challenge] Why I’ve Kept Playing Mabinogi Mobile for So Long

This post is [participating in the Nexon PEAK Post Challenge].

I want to talk about Mabinogi Mobile, a game I’ve been enjoying continuously since launch, and one I’ve grown even more attached to because of how much I care about my characters. My main matters because it’s my main, my alt matters because it’s my alt, and even my alt’s alt has become dear to me for the same reason. That’s the story of how I ended up loving all of them.

Main story updates that come around regularly

Mabinogi Mobile adds new main story content every 3 or 6 months. Since launch, we’ve had Goddess Advent Chapter 1, Goddess Morrighan, followed by Chapter 2, Witch of the Wasteland, Chapter 3, Paladin, Chapter 4, Shadow of the Goddess, and Chapter 5, Light and Darkness. In between, there was also Pale Echo, which came out as a Chapter 4 side story for Goddess Advent rather than part of the main plot. I can’t say there isn’t a slight sense of disappointment here and there, but the main story is moving forward all the same. At first I wondered if it would follow the same story as Mabinogi Online, but the changed story line and character adjustments have made me more curious about what comes next. They also added more narrative weight and plausibility to Ruairi’s actions.

What will the next outfit be like?

Mabinogi Mobile is serious about fashion. Because of that, the Adventurer Pass updates every 42 days, while the Fashion Lucky Box follows its own update cycle. At the time of writing, swimsuits are on sale, and after August 13 they’re set to be replaced by the next outfit. Sometimes I see a set and immediately think, I have to pull for this. Other times, I just go, eh, what is this, and move on. Even so, waiting to see what comes next is definitely part of the fun.

I’ve already invested too much affection

To be completely honest and blunt, part of the reason I’ve stayed with it this long is that I’d hate to waste all the affection I’ve already poured into it. And I’m going to keep playing for a long time. I suppose it can’t be helped—the more affection you give something, the more it grows. My characters are precious to me. So I really hope this game keeps doing well from here on out. I want it to thrive even more. I hope the story line continues to unfold in interesting ways, and that new towns and continents keep arriving in a good way. And I hope the next outfits turn out beautifully too. Why? Because it’s fun.
