They all share the MapleStory name, but each title offers a very different experience. The right choice depends on whether you prefer PC or mobile, or want to revisit the game’s earlier days.

Today, I’ll walk through the options for getting started with the MapleStory series.

More than 250 million players worldwide have played MapleStory on PC and mobile. The franchise is especially well known in Korea, where registered players represent around 45% of the total population. A franchise this large and long-running naturally has a range of titles. Broadly speaking, there are three main options: the original MapleStory on PC, MapleStory M on mobile, and MapleStory Worlds.

Each offers a very different experience, so it is worth choosing one that fits your circumstances and preferences. Let’s look at them one by one.

MapleStory is the original entry in the series. It launched commercially on April 29, 2003, and celebrated its 20th anniversary on April 29, 2023. Known for its distinctive SD characters and charming graphics, it takes place in a fictional universe centered on Maple World. Here, a warrior in plate armor can stand beside a thief in hip-hop clothing without either looking out of place. This blend of genres and settings—from fantastical fairy realms to slums and Native American highlands—is the MapleStory franchise’s greatest appeal.

The original PC game offers the most content. With more than 200 classes, dozens of regions, boss raids, Star Force enhancements, and a guild system, there is plenty to explore in a single game. It is a good fit for players who want to delve deeply into a game, enjoy spectacular skill effects, and find satisfaction in character progression. With so much content, though, it can take some time to find your bearings when you first start.

MapleStory M brings the feel of the original PC game to mobile. It carries over the original’s classes and setting while adapting them for mobile play. The game continues to receive regular updates, including the addition of Cubes to the Mileage Shop in the February 2026 patch.

It is a good fit for those who want to enjoy MapleStory on a smartphone anytime, anywhere, or who cannot spend long stretches at a PC. The auto-battle system makes it accessible for casual play, but there is still plenty to do for those who want to delve deeper. For players who enjoyed the original MapleStory, it is a way to continue that experience on mobile.

MapleStory Worlds takes a different approach. Nexon has made MapleStory assets available through this platform so users can create their own games. It hosts a variety of user-created worlds to play, including Mapleland, Artale, and 메이플 플래닛.

Mapleland, in particular, recreates MapleStory as it was before the Big Bang update, making it an ideal choice for players who want to recapture the feel of the old game. MapleStory Worlds makes it possible to legally recreate classic MapleStory, classic Nexus: The Kingdom of the Winds, and similar experiences. These recreations are a defining part of the platform, drawing the vast majority of new users. Cross-platform support is another advantage, letting you play on both PC and mobile.

In short, the best choice comes down to what you want from the game. For spectacular skills and in-depth progression, choose the original MapleStory on PC. For convenient mobile play anytime, anywhere, choose MapleStory M. To recapture the feel of MapleStory before the Big Bang update, try Mapleland in MapleStory Worlds.
