When you play games, sometimes filling in empty slots and collecting things one by one gets just as addictive as raising your character.
For example, in Pokémon GO, the fun is in filling out the Pokédex and hunting for special individuals, while in MapleStory, collecting the Monster Collection and all kinds of styling items is basically its own kind of collection fun.
And in TalesRunner, which I play a lot too, collecting costumes for different characters and completing my own collection to earn rewards was also one of the things that kept the game fun for me over a long time.
So, as a certified collecting-game addict, I thought I’d do a quick little intro to which parts of the games I play really scratch that collector itch.
ⅠTable of ContentsⅠ
① Collections I had the most fun with
② Why I kept collecting
③ Content I’d recommend
1. Collections I Had the Most Fun With
1.1. Pokémon GO

Can you see my glorious Pokédex?
I started playing on launch day (back when it was just Kanto and Johto..ㅎ..)
collected everything I could, quit for a while, then came back when Hoenn dropped ->
and lately I’ve been collecting again with Sinnoh, Alola, Galar, and more.
If Pokémon GO was the game that really made me feel
the fun of filling out a Pokédex and hunting down special individuals..
1.2. MapleStory

MapleStory has tons of styling items, and

the love-hate Monster Collection ㅡㅡ
(I seriously lost count of how many times I killed Pink Bean trying to register it... ha..)
Maple has a Monster Collection system where you register all kinds of monsters.
I still remember going back on purpose to hunt monsters I’d normally just pass by,
and killing them until they finally registered in the collection ㅋㅋㅋ
1.3. TalesRunner
TalesRunner has a collection book too..?
Of course, TalesRunner doesn’t have monsters popping up or anything like that, so

it’s usually more about collecting seasonal item sets like this,

or filling out a fishing collection book like this..

or collecting the story cards you get after playing
to unlock items or use them for upgrades.
2. Why I Kept Collecting
To sum up why I kept up with the collection side of each game,
it comes down to this.
2.1. Pokémon GO

2.2. MapleStory

2.3. TalesRunner

3. Content I’d Recommend for Each Game
For the content I’d recommend in each game,
check the notes below.

Pokémon GO (Pokédex) |
|---|---|
|
I want to fill out my Pokédex while I’m out walking or heading somewhere! => Recommended if you’re the type to think, “might as well do this while I’m at it.” (yes, I’m talking about myself^^) |
|
|
2 |
MapleStory (Monster Collection) |
|
I want to collect monsters while doing both hunting and exploration! => Especially if you enjoy checking out maps all across MapleStory, I really recommend this. └ But collection registration isn’t guaranteed.. ㅎ.. sometimes you have to kill over 200 in one spot before it finally registers, so I’d recommend it when you’ve got plenty of time.. Still, I had fun with it.. maybe that’s just because I’m a collection addict;; |

TalesRunner (Styling Items) |
|
I like collecting lots of styling items and dressing up my character my own way! And those items are performance gear too?! Nice! => TalesRunner performance items are basically the kind of items styling fans would totally love too, so if you’re into coordinating outfits, I seriously recommend them. └ Though if you’re really obsessive about performance gear, I wouldn’t recommend it ㅎ...ㅠ |
In the end, I think the fun of collection content isn’t just about having a lot of stuff,
but about filling in those empty slots one by one and building up
your own record and results along the way.
Going forward, I hope more games keep using collection elements in new ways
and keep developing them as something that gives players
a solid reason to stick with the game over time.
Alright, that’s it for this post.
I’ll be back next time with another story (๑>•̀๑)
