[PEAK Challenge] The Mabinogi series has been beloved for 22 years!

[Participating in the Nexon PEAK Post Challenge]

When a game is loved by a lot of people and runs for a long time, the developer often ends up expanding it into a series. Some of the game series I know include the Mabinogi series, the MapleStory series, the Mario series, the Pokémon series, and The Legend of Zelda series—plus so many more.

Today, out of all of those, I want to introduce the “Mabinogi series” in particular.

This long-beloved Mabinogi series includes “Mabinogi -> Mabinogi Heroes -> Mabinogi Mobile”!

Let’s go through them one by one, step by step!

1. Mabinogi

(Amusaram)

Mabinogi is the very first game in the Mabinogi series, an MMORPG first released by Nexon in 2004 that has continued to be loved for 22 years.

At the time, most RPGs centered mainly on combat and leveling up, but Mabinogi was a little different. With its “fantasy life” concept, one of Mabinogi’s biggest strengths is that it lets players enjoy a wide range of life content beyond combat, including gathering, fishing, cooking, music performance, part-time jobs, and outfit crafting!

Since I haven’t been able to play Mabinogi myself, I asked “Merona,” who has been playing Mabinogi for a long time and is also playing Mabinogi Mobile.

Q. What is Mabinogi’s charm?

A. When you play Mabinogi, it feels less like “playing a game” and more like truly “living” in a fantasy world.

(MeronaWitch)

I think Mabinogi’s biggest charm is that it doesn’t push you into feeling like you have to do any one specific thing. Instead, you can enjoy the content you personally like and build your own story along the way. Because of that, a lot of players become deeply immersed as they create a unique story for their own character.

If you want to enjoy combat with friends, you can prepare and practice for high-level dungeons. If you enjoy decorating beautiful spaces, you can fully style your own place around a theme through the housing system. On top of that, even complete strangers can happen to gather together to hold a bazaar or perform music as an ensemble, so it gives off a kind of cyber warmth like VRC. It really feels like another life—something that deserves to be called an ancient metaverse!

2. Mabinogi Heroes (Vindictus)

(Chundeokpal)

Mabinogi Heroes is an action RPG released in 2010. While it is based on the Mabinogi IP, it offers a very different kind of appeal from the original. If the original Mabinogi was a game where players could enjoy not just combat, but also life content, community, and a free everyday fantasy life, Mabinogi Heroes is known for putting much more emphasis on fast-paced combat and action!

Mabinogi and Mabinogi Mobile felt somewhat similar, but Vindictus felt a bit different. The characters themselves also felt less like “game characters” and more grounded in realism. The others are rated for ages 12 and up, but only Vindictus is rated 19+! Because of that, the characters felt even more vivid to me. Unlike Mabinogi, which shows “life and a free fantasy lifestyle,” I felt that Vindictus is the title in the series that represents “intense action and the fun of combat.”

Since I haven’t been able to play Mabinogi Heroes myself, I asked “Chundeokpal”!

Q. What is the charm of Mabinogi Heroes?

A. I think the charm of Vindictus is the character “Fiona.”

About 10 years ago, there was a saying like this: “If you want to know a man, look at the game he plays. Then you’ll know his taste. A man who plays Vindictus is already playing his ideal type.” Even though I’m a woman, I happened to fall for a character named Fiona 16 years ago, and I’ve kept playing ever since! I’ll probably keep playing while, every time the director changes, thinking back on the previous director as the better one.

Q. What makes it different from Mabinogi or Mabinogi Mobile?

A. There isn’t much life content! I think that’s because it’s specialized in combat content.

Vindictus started from the same Mabinogi IP, but it has a distinct appeal in how it developed into a much more action-focused game based on the fantasy world setting of the original.

Mabinogi Heroes doesn’t have the specialized life content or performance content that Mabinogi does, but it does have cooking as a professional skill, fishing content, hot spring content, and dancing around town. And in Vindictus, each character has completely different dance motions, which makes that fun to watch too!

3. Mabinogi Mobile

Mabinogi Mobile is an MMORPG officially released on March 27, 2025, and one of its key features is that it reinterprets the emotional feel of the original Mabinogi’s fantasy world and life-style content in a way that fits the mobile environment.

Q. What is the charm of Mabinogi Mobile?

A. Its biggest charm is its accessibility, since it was made for mobile.

Mabinogi Mobile carries over the character of the original Mabinogi, so you can not only grow your character and go on adventures, but also experience a variety of life content, style your character, and enjoy the game in your own way. I think its biggest appeal is that you can do all of this on mobile without needing a PC!

On top of that, it’s nice that on busy days you can play just a little, while on days when you have more time, you can stay longer and enjoy it at your own pace. Rather than just repeating combat and growth, it feels like I’m living in another world by dressing up my character, enjoying life content, and playing the game in “my own way”!

Let’s compare the Mabinogi series!

1. Dye System

In Mabinogi and Mabinogi Mobile, you choose colors yourself from a random palette when dyeing items. I heard this dyeing system is a classic feature of the original Mabinogi! You can see that same approach carried over into mobile as well, and then…

(Vindictus)

Vindictus is said to use dye ampoules for dyeing! Even so, it was really interesting to see that it still has a random palette, which makes it feel similar.

2. Performance System

These are performance screenshots from Mabinogi and Mabinogi Mobile! They were taken in the same town, Emain Macha, with similar outfits. The graphics and art style are different, but they definitely still give off a similar feeling. Unfortunately, Vindictus is said to have no performance content!

3. Life Content

Mabinogi and Mabinogi Mobile are both games with very well-developed life content. Since they’re part of the same series, it really feels like Mabinogi’s content was brought straight into mobile! All of the life content in Mabinogi is also in mobile!

- Fishing

One life-content feature shared across all three games was fishing! It was so fascinating to look at the photos and see how different the graphics and characters are in each one..

- Vindictus: Hot Spring

(Vindictus)

Compared to the other two games, Vindictus doesn’t have much life content, but instead it has a feature called the hot spring. It’s said to be a resting space where you can give your character buffs before battle, take a break, and interact with other users!

4. Combat Content

(Mabinogi)

(Mabinogi Mobile)

(Vindictus)

For combat content, I chose Succubus, and all three games had Succubus in them! Since Vindictus is clearly more specialized in combat than the other two, it’s also said to have something called Succubus Queen. The graphics also really make it feel like a full-on combat RPG, which felt fresh.

5. Decoration System

(Mabinogi)

(Mabinogi Mobile)

Mabinogi is said to have housing systems called Romantic Farm and Moonlight Island! Similarly, Mabinogi Mobile also has a system called My Home. If you’re looking for something similar in Vindictus, it’s said to have a Guild House system. A shared feature across all of them is that you can decorate them according to your own taste.

6. Dancing

The three games had another thing in common too: dancing! Mabinogi really seems serious about its motions. It was fun to compare because the different graphics gave each one a different feel. Vindictus is also said to have completely different dance motions for every character!

The unique charm of the Mabinogi series!

(Vindictus)

I felt that the biggest charm of the Mabinogi series is that it doesn’t lock players into just one way of enjoying the game. Some people can focus on combat and growth, while others can spend their time decorating their character.

(Mabinogi)

Others can enjoy life content or simply hang out and have fun with other users. I also started out mainly focused on the RPG-style fun of growing my character, but over time, I came to appreciate the fun of dressing up my character and spending relaxed time in the game as well.

When I put together the appeal of the different Mabinogi series games, I felt that the special charm unique to the Mabinogi series is that everyone can enjoy the game in the way they want.

The series I recommend most! : Mabinogi Mobile

(Mabinogi Mobile)

All of the Mabinogi series games have their own appeal, but as a Mabinogi Mobile player, I recommend Mabinogi Mobile! Since I don’t usually play PC games, Mabinogi Mobile felt like an easy title to start without much pressure. Thanks to the accessibility of being a mobile game, it was also nice to log in and play for a bit whenever I had time. It has auto-battle and auto-move, so it was convenient to leave running even when I needed to do something else for a moment. Rather than feeling like I had to play all day, I liked that I could enjoy it slowly, only as much as I wanted.

On top of that, I liked that I could experience the warm and free atmosphere of the Mabinogi series in a new way, while also enjoying RPG progression, character customization, and a variety of content together. More than anything, what I liked most from playing it myself was that I could enjoy it at my own pace without the pressure of having to keep up quickly. On days when I wanted to focus on growth, I did that, and on days when I wanted a lighter experience, I decorated my character or simply spent relaxed time in the game world.

I think it’s a title where longtime fans of the Mabinogi series can enjoy familiar emotions in a fresh and lighter way, while for people like me who are experiencing Mabinogi for the first time, it’s a great starting point for getting to know the charm of the series without pressure. If you’re wondering which game in the Mabinogi series to try, I’d like to recommend Mabinogi Mobile—the one I ended up enjoying like another part of my everyday life through playing it myself!

(Mabinogi)

Still, all three games have different strengths, so I think it’s best to choose the one that fits the style you want! Mabinogi is RPG tradition and nostalgia! Mabinogi Mobile is Mabinogi reborn with modern graphics! Mabinogi Heroes is realistic characters built around combat! Through this opportunity, I got to understand Mabinogi and Vindictus much better, and as I discovered their charm, I became more interested in each game too!
