[PEAK Challenge] Tatata, let’s earn the title.

This post is participating in the [Nexon PEAK Post Challenge].

Even now, if someone knows Mabinogi, there are certain phrases they would recognize immediately: the titles "Defeated a Bear at Age 10" and "Defeated a Bear in One Hit." Back in Mabinogi Online, a 10-year-old character was the youngest you could make, and because stats increased with age, taking down a bear at that age was naturally difficult. Bears were also fairly tough field monsters. Unless you had gone through several reincarnations and built up a broad range of stats, having a 10-year-old character defeat one was a genuine challenge. And yet plenty of players went after those titles at the time. Some earned them after getting strong enough on their own, while others got them by landing the finishing hit with another player's help. One thing was certain: they were collectible titles, and that meant you had to have them.

One of the things I was most curious about, returning to the world of the Mabinogi IP through Mabinogi Mobile, was how titles had been implemented. As I remember it, Mabinogi Online let you learn skills without fixed classes, and every time you reincarnated, the skills you had learned stayed with you. Because of that, the more you reincarnated, the more wildly over-specced players became. As everyone kept wanting harder bosses, stronger bosses, and tougher content, I remember the game eventually pushing into absurd levels of difficulty, to the point where even gods appeared. I also remember all kinds of experiments, like the Shakespeare plays, but that was around the time I entered college and started interning, so I drifted away from the game then (though even during that period, I still dipped into Husky Express and Mabinogi Heroes).

Anyway, once I logged into Mabinogi Mobile, that old desire to collect titles came right back. FFFFFF and 000000, both tied to customization, were titles I kept chasing. You could only earn them if FFFFFF or 000000 appeared in the dye color for a designated part. In Mabinogi Mobile, dyeing is a matter of pride. Beyond simply what outfit you are wearing, the way you dye it says a lot about the quality of that look, so it matters quite a bit. Which meant I had to get them... and eventually, I did.

There are also titles you can only get through events. Things like Fresh and Green, or Is That All You've Got? Titles such as Chosen by a Cat and Emergency Escape! are valuable precisely because you can only obtain them by clearing certain missions or completing event tasks. On the other hand, there are also titles I still have not managed to get, even though their requirements are not especially difficult. Those would be the class titles. You can obtain a class title when your character completes their first job advancement in that class. So, since I'm a Pyromancer, I have the first job advancement titles for my alt characters, including Pyromancer, but I do not have the other class titles. There is something undeniably cool about wearing just that class title on its own, so it is still one I want to collect. I once heard that you can gather them by advancing an alt, deleting it, then making another one, advancing it, and deleting it again. I really do wish we had just one more alt character slot.

Mabinogi Mobile has an endless amount of collectible content. There are outfits, there are pets, and there are the titles I have been steadily gathering as well. Filling out the compendium has its own quiet appeal. There are also books within Mabinogi Mobile, and there is a certain fun in tracking them down and reading them one by one. Some of these books can be bought, but others can only be found in-game under specific conditions. Gilmore's ledger, for example. That kind of detail makes the game even more enjoyable to play. I hope you get to experience that kind of fun too.
