The day I installed Cyphers again after so long, I honestly thought I wouldn’t be able to play even one proper match.
I remembered the names of the characters I used to play all the time, but which skill was on which button was a blur. There were a lot of new characters too, and once I stepped into the plaza, the menus felt more complicated than I remembered.
“Maybe I shouldn’t have reinstalled this.”
That thought hit me within five minutes of launching the game.
But after moving a character around a few times in the practice room, my hands reacted before my head did. Bit by bit, I remembered not to get too close to the enemy, not to dump every skill at once, and not to get greedy when my health was low.
It didn’t feel like I was learning everything from scratch.
It was like getting back on a bike you hadn’t touched in years. The first few minutes were shaky, but the old rhythm came back faster than I expected.
If I had to recommend one Nexon game that feels especially easy to return to, it would be Cyphers.

9:12 PM, I closed the equipment window first

The first mistake I made on day one was trying to understand every menu at once.
When I opened the character setup screen, there was a lot to look through: equipment, accessories, consumables, traits. A lot of the item names were similar too, so it was hard to tell right away what was actually good.
By the time I started comparing them one by one, I was already tired... and I hadn’t even entered a match yet.
In the end, I closed the equipment window, left my old setup alone, and headed into the practice room first.
That turned out to be the right call.
On a first day back, character control matters more than perfect equipment. Relearning skill range, movement direction, and the openings after attacking had to come first.
The current official guide also explains that in the Free Practice Room, you can repeatedly practice with every character, and even invite other players to practice with you. (Cyphers)
I could sort out my equipment later, little by little.
If my hands didn’t remember the character yet, even good gear would have been hard to use properly.
9:30 PM, I fought the computer before I fought other players

I didn’t have the nerve to jump straight into a normal match.
In a team game, the first thing I thought was, “If I mess up, it affects other people too.” Especially right after coming back, it wasn’t easy to watch the minimap and use skills at the same time.
So I started with Co-op Battle.
Since the opponents were computers rather than other players, there was a lot less pressure when I mistimed a skill. I could check for myself how far my character moved and how dangerous it was when I got hit.
After one match, more of it came back than I expected.
In the second match, I focused less on getting kills and more on not drifting too far from my teammates. By the third, I was starting to notice the towers and the minimap again.
Cyphers has a full set of modes that let you ease back in step by step, including Tutorial, Prologue, Co-op Battle, Normal Match, Official Match, and Free Practice Room. Returning players can also replay the Tutorial and Prologue. (Cyphers)
Just because I’d been away for a few years didn’t mean I had to start competing against people right away.
The practice room and Co-op Battle were enough to help me remember the flow of a game I used to know well.
10:05 PM, when one match ended, the pressure ended with it
What felt most comfortable about coming back was how growth happens within each individual match.
In Cyphers, you buy equipment and build up your character using coins earned during battle. Those coins only exist for that match, and once the match ends, they reset. (Cyphers)
Of course, the item setup you prepare before a match still needs to be checked separately.
But even after being away for months, it wasn’t the kind of game where I had to catch up on every missed daily task or finish a long progression stretch before I could start fighting again.
Every new match starts you back at a low equipment level.
Even after a long break, all I had to do was defeat Sentinels and Troopers, gather coins, and grow within that match. If I made mistakes in one game, they ended there with the result screen, and I could try again differently in the next one.
That made a bigger difference than I expected in a game I was returning to.
It never felt like one bad match could ruin my whole account, and if a game went poorly, I didn’t have to spend days recovering from it.
10:40 PM, why I picked my old main again
I was curious about the newer characters, but on my first day back, I picked the ranged character I had used the most before.
With a new character, I would have had to start by rereading every skill description. With a familiar one, even if I couldn’t remember the exact skill names, the range and movement were still there in my hands to some extent.
In the first match, I threw attack skills into empty space. In the second, I went down before I could even use my ultimate.
Still, by around the third match, that old judgment started to return: “I shouldn’t go in here.”
If you come back by picking up a new character first, you end up learning the game’s changes and the character’s controls at the same time. For me, it felt much easier to relearn the flow of battle with a character I already knew, then try newer characters separately in the Free Practice Room.
The official Cyphers character guide divides characters into melee and ranged types, and lets you check each character’s basic information and skills. (Cyphers)
Four things I actually stuck to in my first week back

The first was not jumping straight into Official Match.
Normal Match is relatively low-pressure, while Official Match affects your ranking based on wins and losses. (Cyphers)
Right after coming back, recovering my feel for the minimap and character spacing mattered more than rank.
The second was sticking to just one or two characters.
When I rotated between several characters, I kept mixing up skill buttons and attack ranges. Once I limited myself to one familiar character and one character I wanted to practice, I adjusted much faster.
The third was not trying to rebuild every item from scratch.
The setup menu combines combat items, appearance, and character management in one place. (Cyphers)
At first, instead of worrying about gear grade, I just checked whether any slots were empty or whether I had some odd consumable equipped by mistake.
If you received a combat equipment pass through an event or mail, you can freely use combat equipment for a set period, so it’s also worth checking your mailbox and inventory first after returning. (Cyphers)
The fourth was fixing just one mistake after each match.
In one match, the goal was not diving in too deep alone. In the next, it was checking the minimap more often. After that, it was backing off right away when my health got low. I only set one goal at a time.
Whenever I tried to do everything well at once, I spent the whole match feeling overloaded.
Once I stopped trying to get back to my old skill level, it became fun again
The most dangerous thought in the early days of returning was, “I used to be able to do at least this much.”
When I judged my current play against old memories, all I could see were mistakes. Every missed skill and every slow decision just made me more frustrated with myself.
But once I stopped treating it like a return to my old level and started seeing it as adapting all over again, I felt much lighter.
I died less than I had in the previous match, and in the next one, I stayed a little closer to my teammates. Even without a big win, I could see that I was improving.
Cyphers wasn’t the kind of game where taking a long break meant replaying a long story or progression section from the beginning.
I just needed to warm up in the practice room, check the flow in Co-op Battle, and then start syncing up with other players again in Normal Match. When I felt ready, Official Match would still be there.
To me, a good game to restart isn’t just one that gives a lot of return rewards.
It’s a game with a short road back to the fun you used to love.
When I logged into Cyphers for the first time in years, the menus and characters had changed, but the core fun was still there: pushing towers with allies and looking for openings in the enemy team.
On the first day, I thought I’d play just one match and call it there.
But after the third match ended, I naturally hit the Start button again.
My hands hadn’t fully remembered everything yet, but I had already remembered why I stayed with this game for so long.
Have you ever gone back to a game after a long time and found that the fun came back before the controls did?
