[PEAK Challenge] FC Online’s secret to longevity: every season brings new players, and the squad keeps evolving with them

I’ve been playing FC Online for years, and there’s still one big reason I haven’t gotten tired of it. Every season brings in new players, squads evolve, and the game ends up feeling different all over again.

Today, I want to talk about why FC Online has stayed beloved as a long-running game for so many years.

When I first started FC Online, the player card system felt pretty complicated. It was strange at first that the same player could have different classes, and that new cards kept coming out every season. Later on, though, I realized that this is actually one of the core reasons FC Online keeps people invested for so long.

New class players like TK(Team Korea), PTG(Path To Glory), and SH(Step Higher) keep getting added on a regular basis. Whenever a new class drops each season, there’s a real layer of fun in figuring out how to upgrade your existing squad, and it naturally makes you think harder about how to use those new players well. Even the process itself—wondering whether this season’s player fits your squad, and how to line up the right team color combinations—feels like another piece of FC Online’s content.

To celebrate FC Online’s 8th anniversary, the game revealed a large-scale update roadmap running from April to July. It’s not just a one-time event update, but something much closer to a season-wide rework of the game overall.

In May, Kickoff Mode was added. It lets you jump straight into a match without having to build a squad first, so it’s aimed not only at new users but also at players who want a lighter, more casual session. There were definitely people who gave up on starting because squad building felt too difficult, and Kickoff Mode lowered that barrier. The new 8th anniversary class TK was also introduced, built around national team players who performed on the international stage, which gave it even more symbolic weight.

Player Growth was also added as FC Online M-exclusive content. You pick a single player and develop them directly through training and matches, so the system is designed to emphasize the fun of growth beyond simple card collection.

If classic FC Online was about collecting strong player cards and completing your squad, then Player Growth adds another layer: the satisfaction of raising one player yourself. Watching a player you’ve developed become stronger gives a different kind of accomplishment from standard card collecting. And because rewards build up each time you complete a Player Growth season, it creates a clear reason to keep logging in consistently.

One reason FC Online has held up for 8 years is the way it reflects user feedback in its live service. Recently, it has continued rolling out additional improvements based on opinions sent in by club owners. It’s not just about adding new content; consistently fixing pain points in existing systems is what helps build trust in the game as a long-running title.

A new kind of content was also added where club owners can create tournaments themselves and play matches with club owners from their friend list or with club members. The format can range from a round of 32 down to a final four, and every setting can be adjusted freely. In other words, the game is moving in a direction that gives users more freedom to enjoy it the way they want.

As someone who has played FC Online for a long time, there’s something I want to say to people who are just starting now or thinking about coming back. With long-running games, people often assume that starting late automatically puts you at a disadvantage, but FC Online doesn’t really work that way.

Every season brings out new class players, and that shifts the squad meta. Sometimes players that long-time users have built up lose their edge in a new season, while newer users can put together a competitive squad right away with current-season players. Because each seasonal change effectively resets the landscape, you can still catch up even if you start now.

If you like football, I’d say give FC Online a try now. New players arrive every season, and the fun of steadily upgrading your squad is what gives the game its long-term pull. How long have you been playing FC Online?
