Overwatch is one of those rare long-running games that has stayed active ever since its 2016 release.
Over nearly a decade, it has continued to add new heroes, maps, and all kinds of events,
and the move to Overwatch 2 also brought a major shift in how the game plays, from 6:6 to 5:5.
More recently, its Korean PC service is set to transfer to Nexon, which feels like another major turning point.

Even after going through changes on this scale more than once, plenty of players still stick with it,
and I think that says a lot about why the game has lasted.
I started playing with friends back in the early days, and even now I still log in once in a while.
So I wanted to talk a bit about what has kept Overwatch appealing to me for so long.

🎮 Why Overwatch Has Stayed Popular for So Long

The fun of learning heroes one by one

1

When I first started playing Overwatch with friends, I mostly used Mercy and Lucio.
They were not too hard to control, and they were useful to the team, so they felt like comfortable heroes to learn on.

2

As I got more familiar with the game, I started wanting to make a bigger impact on the team myself.
So I gradually picked up Ana, Zenyatta, and Kiriko as well.
Since every hero has completely different skills and a different role,
learning someone new always felt a little like learning a whole new game.

3

There is one beginner-era moment I still remember clearly.
Genji was using Deflect, and because I did not know what it was yet, I kept attacking anyway,
only for my own attack to bounce back and kill my friend.
At the time, my friend told me that was the one moment I should not be hitting him and explained how Deflect worked, and now it is just a funny memory.
That process of learning each hero's traits one at a time was also a big part of what kept Overwatch fun for me over the years.

Even with the same hero, every match feels different

4

Having a large hero roster is one of Overwatch's strengths,
but what stood out to me even more was that even when I played the same hero,
the right answer changed from match to match.

5

A different map changes how you need to play, and a different team comp changes the role you need to fill.
Even on the same map with the same hero,
you still have to keep adjusting depending on the enemy comp and the level of your own team.
Some of the most satisfying moments came when I read the situation well, made the right decisions, and felt the match start to go our way.

6

Since Overwatch is an FPS, strong aim definitely helps,
but hero picks, team composition, ultimate management, and situational judgment all have a huge impact on whether you win or lose.
I think that is another reason the game has stayed loved for so long: even players like me, who do not really have the mechanics for DPS,
can still contribute plenty if they find a hero that fits them.

Support heroes became even more fun in 5:5

Naturally, support became the role I ended up playing the most.

7

In 6:6, support often felt like a role built mostly around following behind tank heroes and keeping them healed.
But in 5:5, there are far more moments where supports pressure enemies, contribute to kills, and directly swing the flow of a teamfight.
Being able to create those turning points myself made the role much more enjoyable,
and that is still why I play Ana, Kiriko, and Zenyatta the most.

7-1

New heroes and patches keep arriving, and the overall flow of play keeps shifting little by little.
I think the biggest reason Overwatch has stayed loved for more than 10 years
is that even as a familiar game, it continues to offer something new.

🔄 Why I Recommend It to New and Returning Players

Why I recommend it to people just starting out

8

At first glance, Overwatch can feel intimidating simply because there are so many heroes.
But rather than trying to learn everyone at once, I would recommend starting with just a few heroes that suit you.

9

I also started out by learning the overall flow of the game through Lucio and Mercy,
and once I got comfortable, I slowly expanded the number of heroes I could play.
As I did, I naturally came to understand different roles better, and the game became much more enjoyable.

Why now is a good time if you are returning

10

If you are coming back to Overwatch after a break, I would recommend trying the newly added heroes and updated systems first,
instead of jumping in with the exact same habits you used before.
Support in particular has become a much more proactive role than it used to be, and that changes the feel of the game quite a bit.

💙 Nexon's Korean Service, and Why I Am Looking Forward to What Comes Next

11

Overwatch's Korean PC service will soon transfer to Nexon, which feels like a welcome change for domestic players.
Existing Blizzard accounts can now be linked with Nexon accounts, and there is also an account-linking reward event in progress,
so if you have been thinking about returning, it seems worth checking out.

12

Blizzard is still handling development,
but with Nexon taking over the Korean service, it feels reasonable to expect more active operations and events
aimed at domestic players than before.
As someone who already enjoys Nexon games, I also liked the idea of seeing Overwatch again on a platform that already feels familiar.

13

I do not think a long-running game is created simply by staying online for a long time.
It takes steady updates, meaningful changes, and a constant effort to give players reasons to come back.
Overwatch has shown that over the past 10 years,

and I think this transfer to Nexon is another one of those changes that makes the next 10 years feel worth looking forward to.

Overwatch was the game I first started playing with friends at a PC bang.
To me, it is not just a game that remains as a memory,
but a long-running title I still come back to for a match now and then whenever I think of it.
I hope future hero updates help it continue as a game people love for a long time to come.
