[PEAK Challenge] Celebrating Mabinogi’s 22nd Anniversary! A Long-Running Game That Never Gets Old

[Participating in the NEXON PEAK Post Challenge]

A game filled with so many memories,

a game that has become part of my life,

a game I somehow(?) keep coming back to out of habit—for hundreds of hours, thousands of hours, decades(!!).

That game is Mabinogi.

“The landscapes of Erinn pass before my eyes.

Everything from the moment I first set foot in this land

to where I stand today.”

Mabinogi, a Game I Never Tire Of (1) An Event Extravaganza

Why do I never get tired of Mabinogi?

I thought it over, and the answer was right there in the record of my years with Mabinogi.

“A never-ending celebration”

That's right. For well over a decade, Mabinogi

has kept the events coming, one after another.

For Halloween, there's the Samhain festival,

for Christmas, a Christmas festival,

for National Liberation Day, a hanbok event,

for school breaks, Free Season/Fever Season events,

when the college entrance exam is over, there's another event to celebrate,

for Valentine's Day, an event with chocolate to give away,

for White Day, an event with candy to give away,

for summer, a Doki Doki Island event,

for each year's anniversary, the way to the 신비의 서고 opens for an event,

when guests arrive from MapleStory, there's an event,

when 잔망루피 arrives, there's an event,

for the 30th anniversary of The Kingdom of the Winds, there's an event,

when the party from <Frieren: Beyond Journey's End> arrives from afar, there's an event,

.

.

.

.

.

.

Honestly, does any other game take events quite as seriously as Mabinogi does?

The lively, festive atmosphere,

the special items you can only get during an event,

the goal an event gives you in an otherwise uneventful(?) gaming routine—

I loved it all, and as an “event enthusiast”—by my own admission and everyone else's—

I think Mabinogi's endless stream of events... never even gave me a chance to get tired of the game.

Mabinogi, a Game I Never Tire Of (2) How Far Have You Taken Your Character's Story?

Dressing up your character is an essential part of Mabinogi.

Once you've created a character, customizing their face shape, eyes, nose, mouth, and even race to your liking,

you can dress them up with thousands of items: outfits, shoes, gloves, hats—even wings and tails.

Before you know it, an “OC”—an original character all your own—takes shape...

And the moment you start imagining relationships and stories for that character,

there's no leaving Mabinogi behind...!

Back when I played Mabinogi with friends,

we had so much fun introducing our characters and their different backstories to one another.

I'm still here in Erinn, and I still put just as much care into dressing up each of my characters.

Even if I don't run dungeons!

I still have to wear pretty clothes!ㅋㅋ

—키타라, the ever-spirited little girl

—피스, the magic archer who quietly looks after his older sister and younger sibling

—노이에, the grumbling Master Angler

—케치, the head of the household

—I've also recreated Ganon and Zelda from another game I love, <The Legend of Zelda>,

—the young master, Lizzy, and Sebastian from <Black Butler>,

—Kaworu, Shinji, Rei, and others from <Evangelion>,

—and Tarlach, Ruairi, the goddess Macha, the goddess Morrighan, and others from <Mabinogi>'s main storyline.

Mabinogi, a Game I Never Tire Of (3) Another Busy Day in Erinn

“What do you even do when you log into Mabi…?”

“…………I hardly have a moment to spare…”

xx years ago, the first thing I did when I woke up was “set up a shop in the square on Channel 10.”

There was no Auction House back then, so trading meant setting up a shop in the square or just outside Dunbarton's walls.

Competition for a “good spot” was fierce... (and a good location really did mean better sales).

The system was cruel enough to close your shop whenever you changed channels or logged out,

so plenty of people left their computers on(!!!) just to keep their shops open.

—My friends and I certainly did!!ㅋㅋ

Now that Erinn has an Auction House, you might wonder what could possibly keep me so busy...

I've heard that Erinn's veteran powerhouses usually spend their days doing combat quests, such as dailies or Today's Missions, then standing like statues in Dunbarton, chatting with friends.

But as for me,

—I don't fight (unless someone tells me to),

—my friends don't log in, so there's no one to chat with (sobs),

and yet,

somehow, once I log in, I really don't stop for a moment.

How busy am I? Busy enough that I barely have time to visit a friend who's finally managed to log in, let alone settle in for a chat(!!).

(...Of course... when one of those friends—rarer than wild ginseng—does log in, I drop everything and go...)

<What I Do in Erinn>

—There are event quests to do (I'm an event enthusiast, after all),

—my homestead to look after (I send out Pet Expeditions to level up my pets along the way),

—items to list on the Auction House (my dream is to become a merchant magnate),

—and if there's any time left, a main storyline to catch up on. I'm very, very far behind.

For reasons I can't explain, the [Find the Sidhe Sneachta Snowman's Lost Earring] quest (the beginning of G1) has somehow come back to me,

and, well, even friends returning after years away have begged me to please finish the main story...

—On top of that, events these days only let one character per account participate, so there's little point in logging into alts on the same account... Whenever I have a spare moment, I join in on a secondary account registered under my name and build that one up too.

So I simply don't have the spare time to stand around as a Dunbarton statue.

Mabinogi, a game I never tire of.

Today, once again, I'm busy in Erinn!ㅎㅎ

May Mabinogi keep on going

all the way to its 100th birthday.
