[PEAK Challenge] Recommending those life-changing games you still can’t forget, even after all this time!

Participating in the Nexon PEAK Post Challenge

Hello~

Today, as a gamer girl(^^), out of all the games I’ve played so far,

I wanted to talk about the ones I still can’t forget even after all this time,

my all-time life games,

the kind of games that make me think, “Everyone should try this at least once~”

so I thought I’d introduce them!

Of all the games I’ve played, these are the ones I loved the most:

1. The War of Genesis III Part 2 - a Softmax CD game

2. TalesWeaver - a Softmax, Nexon game

3. Mabinogi - a devCAT, Nexon game

4. Trickster - a Sonnori, Ntreev, Netmarble game

5. Honkai: Star Rail - a HoYoverse game

If I had to pick just a few, these are the five I loved most and stuck with the longest ㅎㅎ

The War of Genesis 3 Part 2

It’s a PC game released by Softmax in Korea,

and it came out on December 22, 2000, across 4 CDs.

It was also the final ending to the long-running War of Genesis series.

The story is huge and really tightly put together,

and to me, it felt like a game with a perfect beginning, middle, and end.

Every character has their own story,

and each person’s illustrations, story, skills, abilities, and everything else..

it all felt incredibly polished.

Even the voice cast back then was amazing,

and a lot of them are now considered legendary voice actors..

Kang Su-jin, Kim Young-sun, Yang Jeong-hwa, Kim Il..

This was the first game that made me cry while following the story...

Since it came from the old Windows 98, 2000, and XP era,

it doesn’t run on Windows 10 or 11 now. So sad ㅠㅠ

You can somehow get it working with other programs,

but running it with the official CD is basically impossible at this point.

If you love old nostalgic games and story-focused play,

this is one I really recommend.

TalesWeaver

It’s an MMORPG made by Softmax in Korea.

It was released on December 17, 2002.

It combines the world of Jeon Min-hee’s Children of the Rune + the online community 4LEAF,

and there’s also the fun little detail that “Nayatrei,” who appears as an Easter egg in The War of Genesis 3 Part 2,

is the very same “Nayatrei” who appears in TalesWeaver ㅎㅎ

Nexon, which was the distributor at the time, acquired it,

and after that it really came to be called one of the five classic RPGs.

And the most famous thing about TalesWeaver is probably its OST ^^!!

In its early days, TalesWeaver also

had a great story, and each character’s combat style, skills, and systems all felt just right.

Once you hit certain level ranges, you definitely needed endless grinding, so sometimes you had to take a little break..

But because the playerbase was pretty big,

I made lots of in-game friends and even started a guild,

so I spent a lot of time bonding and hanging out with all kinds of people.

It’s also a game that stayed with me from elementary school all the way through high school.

Current TalesWeaver has gone through a lot of updates,

and the story from back then (Episode 1, Episode 2)

is now tucked away in the Library of Memories,

and with the addition of the Nenyaffle School,

the whole leveling style has changed a lot too.

If you log in for nostalgia, a lot of people end up pretty surprised..^^;;

Still, it’s honestly not bad to jump in and play it at least once.

Early leveling is really fast now, so it’s fun!

Mabinogi

It was developed by devCAT Studio

and released on June 22, 2004, as an MMORPG.

Nexon acquired it, and it became a full-fledged Nexon game!

In its early days, Mabinogi also

had a system with 2 hours free + paid items usable at PC bangs + no forced logout if you were inside a dungeon,

so

it was honestly such a great game for students to hop into here and there.

It also had a lot of freedom,

so whether I became a warrior or a mage, I could switch anytime!

And on top of that,

the real endgame in this game was... dungeons? achievement hunting? bosses? story? Nope!

It was actually...

dress-up + chatting! Seriously!! Ta-da

It really was such an easy game to play casually.

Of course, once you got into bosses or started looking at it from a veteran player perspective,

spending money did become pretty much necessary..

(You had to buy pets too.. and if you wanted to play for more than 2 hours, you had to pay for a monthly pass..)

That feeling of pride when I made a 10-year-old character, beat a bear, and got the title-!

Along with TalesWeaver, this is one of the games that stayed with me through my school years,

so I feel especially attached to it.

Even now, Mabinogi has kept its system intact without really changing.

I think it’s become a very newbie-friendly game.

They got rid of the partial free-to-play system, and the tutorial is really kind, so you can level up fast too.

They also give out a lot of pets,

so I’d say there’s no truly essential cash spending.

(Ah, of course, if you really want to go deep into the game, you’ll need to upgrade your gear,

so to some extent, yes, you do need it...)

If you want to hop in for a quick nostalgia trip, I really recommend Mabinogi!

Trickster

It was made by Sonnori and opened on April 10, 2003 (with its official launch in July),

as a casual MMORPG.

Since it was distributed by Netmarble, I remember mostly playing it there.

It was later transferred to Ntreev, and sadly the service eventually ended...

It’s a game with cute animal friends

and four class types in total: charm, attack, sense, and magic.

It had different systems like combat, drilling, and pets,

and more than anything, even though this new idea of drilling was kind of divisive,

I remember really liking it.

The story was good too,

but most of all, I loved how cuuuute the backgrounds were.

The combat system was nice too.

The only downside was that if you wanted to use drills, you either had to go all-in on sense,

or (later on) buy an auto-drill with cash,

because manual drilling was truly grinding at its purest, so it could get really tiring.

Well.. back in those days,

it was an era where everything—levels, digging up items, all of it—meant grinding anyway..

I wish I could play it again, but since the game shut down, I can’t, and that part really is a shame.

Honkai: Star Rail

Nostalgia? Maybe not, since it came out pretty recently,

but it’s definitely one of the games I’m most into these days~!

It’s a turn-based RPG released by HoYoverse in April 2023.

I’ve heard it’s the fifth title in HoYo’s Honkai series.

Maybe because I prefer turn-based games over open-world ones,

it ended up being a really good fit for me.

Maybe because it’s from the same company as Genshin Impact,

which opened the door for subculture games,

the systems are good, the story is good, the modeling is good,

it’s just solid all around.

More than anything, the story and the OST & BGM are so, so good. Hoho..

It also does a really nice job of unfolding each character’s narrative,

so if you’re someone who loves story,

I’d wholeheartedly recommend it~

There are so many different games in the world,

but maybe because I have so many memories tied to Nexon games,

I really, really want to recommend these two above all else (TalesWeaver, Mabinogi)...!!
