[PEAK Challenge] Why Do Dave the Diver’s Characters Stay with You?

[Participating in the NEXON PEAK Post Challenge]

When you play all kinds of games, some naturally stick with you for different reasons—“the combat was amazing,” “the story was so emotional,” and so on. But there’s one game I still remember for a very specific reason: its reactions are an absolute 맛집.

That game is “Dave the Diver,” which recently got a DLC called In The Jungle.

Dave the Diver is a game where you catch fish during the day, then run a sushi restaurant at night with what you caught. The core concept is already pretty unusual, but in this game, the motions you see during events and character conversations really feel like they multiply the game’s charm several times over.

So today, I wanted to talk through my personal take on what exactly made me feel that way while playing Dave the Diver.

Characters bursting with personality

One reason the characters in Dave the Diver have stayed in my head for so long is probably just how distinctive they are. Dave himself is the best example: instead of the usual cool, polished protagonist image, he’s portrayed as chubby and a little clunky in motion, but his gentle personality and oddly righteous side make him come off as incredibly likable.

And it’s not just Dave. The many characters around him all show off their own personalities really well. Whether they’re talking or throwing out some exaggerated reaction, they stay true to their concept while still being funny to watch, and I think that’s a big part of why they stick in your memory so strongly.

In the In The Jungle DLC, there’s even a part-time worker NPC who came to the jungle chasing a UFO, got bitten by a spider, and can use Spider-Man-style webs. At first I just brushed it off like, what kind of nonsense is this.. but then I saw the insane performance at the restaurant at night, and I had that exact thought: “This is why I play Dave the Diver..”

Since I’m still playing through it, I’m definitely hoping even more interesting characters show up later.

Character portraits packed with emotion

Dave the Diver has a ton of dialogue with all kinds of NPCs. Since it’s the kind of game that unfolds as you progress through the story, you naturally end up talking a lot, and in those conversations—or in the sudden events that pop up out of nowhere—you get to see all sorts of playful, expressive character portraits.

Personally, I find those portraits that keep popping up really charming. It’s not just that they show off each character’s personality well—it’s also that the excited expressions and anticipation-filled motions make their emotions come through much more intensely.

You could say they feel a little over-the-top at times, but that’s also exactly why they sell each character so well. A lot of the time, they made me go, “Oh, so this is what this character is like?!” and that’s what made them memorable.

Almost as delicious as the fish dishes.. (And I mean that literally, because fish actually show up;)

Because Dave the Diver has that nighttime sushi-shop system built into it, a lot of food-related events naturally come up.

That means you end up doing things like cooking battles or quests where you present a dish, and every time I cleared one, I felt like going, “Is a new reaction scene starting again?!!” That’s how fun the characters’ eating reactions are to watch.

The reason, I think, is that it absolutely nails that B-grade vibe. Instead of making things flashy, it turns raw emotion into something deliberately goofy, so there were a lot of moments where I just burst out laughing. Naturally, it also made me start looking forward to the next quest and wondering, “When’s the next one going to show up..”

I really think that strong impression—“these reactions are just too fun!”—got lodged in my head, and that’s why the game’s characters ended up being so memorable to me.

While watching Dave the Diver’s reaction animations, there are definitely moments where I think, “I’ve seen this kind of framing somewhere before..”

In that image’s case, I’m guessing it was probably designed to evoke the dragon from Dragon Ball. Since it suddenly appeared in the middle of a reaction animation, it ended up being a particularly memorable moment.

While playing the In The Jungle DLC, I also noticed a character who has that same weak-to-praise energy as One Piece’s Chopper. It feels like the game mixes in meme-like traits from famous characters when building its own cast, and honestly, I think that works as a pretty smart form of marketing.

Since I work in game development, details like that made me think, wow, so you can approach character concepts like this too.. and that made the whole thing feel even more impressive to me.

So this was my little talk about Dave the Diver—a game with delicate, charming character motions, yes, but more than that, one that really maximizes each character’s concept through 2D graphics and lets their appeal explode.
