In MMORPGs, there is a lot to think about when putting together your gear.
You have to evaluate not just which setup is strong right now, but also why it is strong.
In Mabinogi Mobile, the runes you engrave matter much more than the gear itself.
Even within the same class, your skill setup changes depending on which accessory runes you use,
and in many cases your main skills, damage cycle, and overall playstyle can shift quite a bit.
That is why whenever a new season starts, I pay more attention to the new runes than to the gear itself.
At the moment, my main is Monk, and I am also raising Longbowman, Bard, Fighter, Musician, and Warrior as alts.
Since I play several classes, I naturally find myself checking class-specific rune setups quite often.

From the Community into the Game

In the past, when I was building a setup, community guides were my main reference point.
Looking up which runes were good and what combinations people were using was basically part of my routine.

Then the in-game system called 'Adventurer Opinions' was added.
At first, I honestly wondered why they had added another feature I did not really need.
After all, that information was already available through the community.
But once I used it myself, my opinion changed completely.

This system shows how often top players use certain runes through pick rates,
and it also lets you read comments explaining why those runes are being used.
Being able to check the live meta through both numbers and player opinions turned out to be more useful than I expected.
Runes that are close to standard builds often go over a 90% pick rate,
while runes that split based on playstyle often settle around the 30% to 40% range.
How My Setup Actually Changed
After checking Adventurer Opinions, I did end up changing my rune setup at one point.

On my main Monk, I had been using the accessory combination Tidal Wave, Thunderstrike, Purification,
but after looking at Adventurer Opinions, I saw that Consecration had a pick rate roughly 30 percentage points higher than Purification.
I was already questioning how effective Purification really was in practice,
so it was nice to have a clear reason to switch to a rune that players preferred more and that seemed more proven in actual gameplay.
Since I raise multiple classes, the differences between them also started to stand out naturally.
For example, classes like Monk that are effectively forced to use Oblivion and Infinity on their weapon
have a hard time securing critical rate through weapon runes,
so Pale Flash, which helps make up critical rate through armor, showed a high pick rate,
whereas other classes often got more value from additional hits and used Flickering Flame much more often.
Being able to compare those differences directly in-game was especially convenient for someone raising multiple characters.
I Can't Fix My Minor-Build Habit
On the other hand, there were also cases where I checked the meta and still did not follow it.
The clearest example was my alt, Musician

I was using the accessory combination Ominous Star, Enchantment, Finale,
and when I checked Adventurer Opinions, Ominous Star only had a 3% pick rate ㅋㅋㅋㅋ
It was a truly niche rune, but that almost made me like it more.

The accessory rune Ominous Star may be a niche choice,
but it changes the skill Star's Sonata into Nocturne of Chaos and turns it into a deployable skill,
and the flashier effect meant there was no way I was giving it up.
So I decided to rebuild the rest of my setup around Ominous Star.

When using Ominous Star, critical efficiency seemed better than the value of additional hits,
so I picked Flame over Crystal for my weapon rune,
and I also used Berserker's Faceguard to smooth out my damage cycle.
That process of building my own setup by adjusting even my weapon and armor around a single accessory rune
is another part of what makes Mabinogi Mobile fun for me.
What Feels Lacking
Of course, there are still areas I would like to see improved.

Adventurer Opinions shows the pick rates of top players,
but it is hard to tell how many players those figures are actually based on.
It is also unclear whether the rankings are based on combat power or on Abyss performance.
On top of that, many players swap runes depending on the content, especially in Abyss and raids,
and it did not feel like that was fully reflected here.
So for now, I still have to use community guides alongside it.
Knowing the meta and following the meta are two different things.
Adventurer Opinions made it much easier to reference the setups used by top players,
and it did end up becoming the reason I changed some of my own setups.
But the setup I stick with the longest is still the one that feels right in my own hands.
Popular runes are strong for a reason, but there is also real value in testing a rune that almost nobody uses
and finding unexpected fun in the process.
