Hello, this is Edgar.
When people talk about game collaborations, the first things that usually come to mind are character skins or event items.
You log in for a bit, collect the rewards,
pick up a few commemorative items,
and once the event ends, it often fades from memory on its own.
But every now and then, a collaboration goes beyond being just an in-game event
and becomes something that makes you see the game itself differently.
When I saw this #인상깊은게임콜라보 topic,
the first Nexon game collaboration that came to mind
was MapleStory X BTS.

Honestly, when I first heard about it, I was a little surprised.
MapleStory and BTS.
They are both incredibly famous,
but at first, it was not an easy combination to picture.
To me, MapleStory is a game tied closely to memories of childhood PC bangs, chatting with friends, hunting grounds, and dressing up characters.
BTS, meanwhile, are artists with enormous popularity all over the world.
So my first thought was,
“How are these two even meeting?”
But once I looked into it,
I realized it was not just a collaboration borrowing a famous name.
What impressed me was that the BTS members talked about their memories of MapleStory,
took part in designing items themselves,
and those ideas became in-game outfit items.
For me, the most important question in any game collaboration is,
“Why does this collaboration belong in this game?”
Bringing in a famous character or a famous brand will attract attention on its own.
But if it does not match the game’s atmosphere,
it can end up feeling like nothing more than an advertisement.
MapleStory X BTS, though,
felt more natural than I expected.
That is because MapleStory itself
has always been a game where customization and nostalgia matter a great deal.
MapleStory is not just a game about leveling up and defeating bosses.
How you style your character,
what hat you give them,
what clothes you put them in,
even how they stand around in town,
all of that says a lot about each player’s taste.
So having outfit items designed directly by the BTS members
was actually a very good fit for MapleStory.

When I think of MapleStory,
there is a scene that comes to mind before hunting ever does.
People gathered in places like Henesys or the Free Market,
each wearing strange hats,
bright, eye-catching clothes,
and somehow their characters’ personalities showed even when they were just standing there in silence.
In MapleStory, customization has long been a culture of its own.
Separate from having strong gear,
what mattered was how you made your character look.
So when items designed directly by BTS were added to a game like that,
it did not feel like a simple collaboration product,
but more like players were dressing their characters in memories.
What especially stayed with me was
that this collaboration did not end as an event only for existing players.
People who played MapleStory
were surprised, saying, “Wow, MapleStory is collaborating with BTS?”
and BTS fans
became interested in the game, thinking, “So MapleStory was a game BTS liked.”
It felt like two different worlds meeting.
From the perspective of someone who has played games for a long time,
moments like that still feel pretty remarkable.
In the past, when you talked about games,
often only other people who played games really understood what you meant.
But once the BTS collaboration happened,
even people who did not know much about games were seeing the name MapleStory again.
That, to me, is the power of collaboration.
A good collaboration does not end with simply adding one item to a game.
For people who do not know the game, it becomes an entry point,
for people who used to play, it becomes a reason to remember it again,
and for current players, it becomes something new to talk about.
MapleStory X BTS was exactly that.
The reason this collaboration left such a strong impression on me
was not just that it became a hot topic.
I liked that the BTS members talked about their memories of MapleStory.
Instead of simply appearing like models,
saying “We’re collaborating,” and leaving it there,
it felt like they actually knew the game
and had memories of enjoying it when they were younger.
That part fit MapleStory especially well.
MapleStory is an old game.
And because of that, players have built up years of memories around it.
People who played it in elementary school
are now in their 20s or 30s and sometimes log in again,
and when they look at the characters they made back then,
memories from that time come back with them.

I feel that too.
If you look at MapleStory today,
it has plenty of systems, plenty of bosses, and plenty of progression elements.
But somewhere in the back of my mind,
I still remember chatting with friends in the old hunting grounds.
So when I saw the BTS members talking about their MapleStory memories,
it felt like more than just a collaboration between famous artists and a game.
I found myself thinking, “Ah, so they remember MapleStory that way too.”
There was something quietly nice about that.
The outfit items also suited MapleStory very well.
MapleStory characters are small and cute in design,
so even flashy outfits or unusual hats do not feel too much.
If anything, the more exaggerated the item is,
the more it brings out MapleStory’s particular charm.
In that sense, the BTS collaboration items
felt perfectly natural once they were in the game.
It was interesting to see the style of real-life artists
transformed into MapleStory-style outfit items.
One nice thing about collaboration items like these
is that they become even more nostalgic as time passes.
At the time, they may have looked like ordinary event items,
but years later,
you end up thinking, “Oh right, there was a collaboration like that.”
The reason game merchandise or limited outfit items stay in your memory for so long is similar.
More than the items themselves,
what stays with you is what game you were playing then,
what the atmosphere felt like,
and what people were talking about.
In that sense,
MapleStory X BTS meant more than just an event.
It became a topic inside the game,
a topic outside the game as well,
and gave MapleStory, an old game,
another moment of broad public attention.
That is also why I would recommend this collaboration to others as an especially memorable example.

A collaboration does not automatically succeed just because it involves something famous.
It has to suit the game,
there has to be a connection players can accept,
and it has to remain memorable even after the event is over.
MapleStory X BTS handled those three points quite well.
First, it matched MapleStory’s customization culture.
Second, because the BTS members directly took part in the design, it felt less like simple promotion.
Third, it created something to talk about for both MapleStory players and BTS fans.
I think that is more than enough to call it an impressive game collaboration.
Of course, not every player has the same taste.
If you were not a BTS fan,
you might have cared less at first.
But from the perspective of game collaborations,
cases with this much mainstream reach were rare.
I remember seeing this collaboration at the time and thinking,
“MapleStory may be an old game, but it can still create buzz like this.”
For an older game to stay alive,
it needs new content, of course,
but sometimes it also needs moments like this, when it meets culture outside the game.
That way, existing players feel glad to see it,
returning players are reminded of it again,
and people encountering it for the first time become curious.
MapleStory X BTS
was a collaboration that filled that role well.
For me, an impressive game collaboration
is not simply an event that handed out a lot of items.
It is a collaboration that adds something new
without harming the game’s atmosphere.
And even after time passes,
it is something you can still look back on and say, “That happened back then.”
By that standard,
MapleStory X BTS definitely stays with me.
They were outfit items you could put on your in-game character,
but they also carried the memories of people who enjoyed MapleStory,
along with the cultural symbolism of BTS.
So for this #인상깊은게임콜라보 topic,
I wanted to introduce MapleStory X BTS.
It was an unexpected meeting,
but in the end, it suited each other surprisingly well.
A collaboration that added fun to customization inside the game,
and outside the game, brought the name MapleStory back to mind.
For me, that was the most impressive part.
