[PEAK Challenge] A Look at MapleStory’s Boss Improvements

[Participating in the Nexon PEAK Post Challenge]

Hello.

This is Mapo Gam튀.

Today, let’s go over the bosses that changed with MapleStory’s summer update, OVERDRIVE.

If I had to pick the most impactful announcement from this summer’s MapleStory showcase,

I’d personally go with the boss revamp.

It was a pretty shocking change—they said they’d cut overly long boss clear times down, taking 30-minute bosses and turning them into 20-minute ones!!

Just thinking about it was great already, since it meant less boss fatigue.

But then—wait, what was this..?

Once the update actually went live,

there were a ton of changes included that hadn’t even been mentioned in the presentation.

So today, let’s look at the boss changes that weren’t covered beforehand—especially the ones that can help with early-to-midgame boss progression.

Weekly bosses turned into daily bosses through boss tier adjustments

Some of the less popular(?) weekly bosses were changed into daily bosses.

Hilla (Hard), Pink Bean (Chaos), and Cygnus (Normal)

These three bosses can now be challenged as daily bosses.

Even after clearing every boss I had registered in the scheduler, some characters still weren’t reaching 12 clears,

so I was seriously confused—then I checked the patch notes and realized it was because Pink Bean had become a daily boss ㅎㅎ

Will pattern adjustments

First off, Will’s spider leg effect has been changed.

It’s definitely easier to see than before, and it somehow even feels a bit slower.

You can really tell it’s clearer when you look at it like this, right?

The shattered mirror effect was also changed to stand out more.

Old effect

Changed effect

It’s definitely much easier to see now.

And in Phase 3, it also feels like the spider webs are filling up more slowly than before.

Back then, if I got through about three burst cycles, the screen would fill up so much that it became impossible to manage solo and I’d fail the run,

but now it seems to build at a pace that’s actually manageable.

Verus Hilla pattern improvements

First, the spacing between Verus Hilla’s threads has gotten subtly wider.

This was the old thread spacing.

And this is the new thread spacing.

It’s juuust a little wider, but enough that it really feels like actual safe zones exist now.

The second change is one beginner players will really notice.

It’s the improved visual guidance for the front-green/back-purple pattern.

Before, during Soul Slash, you had to consciously remember that green meant front and purple meant back while dealing with the pattern.

Now the attack range is shown way more clearly.

I really like this kind of clean QoL patch for newer players.

If there was any other change from this patch that you liked, let me know in the comments!
