[PEAK Challenge] Reflections on the Unusual Quest: the Diregie Raid

Even after the boss was down, the first quest in all my years with DNF to leave me with a lingering sense of unease was the Dirigie Raid.

Today, I want to revisit the Dirigie Raid scenario, which still stands out in my memory as one of the most distinctive quests in Dungeon&Fighter.

Participating in the Nexon PEAK Post Challenge

After you have played DNF for long enough, raid bosses start to feel like part of a routine. You memorize the mechanics, put the party together, bring the boss down, collect the rewards, and that is that. At first, I assumed Dirigie would be no different. I knew the setting framed him as someone who hated adventurers intensely, but I have never really been the type to read every line of the story with much care, so I went into the raid thinking it would just be another case of beating him and moving on.

After defeating Dirigie, though, the scenario went somewhere I did not expect. It was not simply a matter of killing him and being done with it; through the dialogue, it gradually unfolded why Dirigie hated the adventurer so deeply, and where that emotion had first taken root. Seeing that resentment, built up over such a long time, slowly begin to loosen through his exchange with the adventurer was not at all the kind of scene I expected from a raid boss quest. The moment an enemy I had assumed existed only to be beaten started speaking to me, my hand stopped.

Even after the clear screen appeared, I could not bring myself to close it right away. Most raids leave my mind the moment I check the reward window, but the Dirigie Raid did not. What lingered for a while was a strange heaviness — the sense of not quite knowing whether I had won or lost, and the weight that comes with understanding your enemy too late. Only after it ended did I fully realize that this had not been mere repeatable content, but the experience of seeing a story through to its end. Even if you are not especially invested in the story of DNF, this is one quest I would still urge you to read properly at least once.
