Which suits me better: a progression-based RPG, or a sports game?

[Participating in the Nexon PEAK Post Challenge]

Hello.

I’m Picker Doronagi.

Game Genre Showdown

Today I’m comparing growth-focused RPGs and sports games.

I’ll use Mabinogi Mobile and League of Legends as examples since I’ve actually played both.

Both genres have their pros and cons.

Growth-focused RPGs feel like a battle against yourself, you know?

There’s a real sense of achievement that comes from raising your character.

And since RPGs are big on 운빨, it gets annoying when the drops just refuse to happen.

But when the drops are good instead? 굿~

Having a goal keeps you motivated, but the second you hit it, that classic 현타 can kick in too.

Sports games give you that sense of achievement through beating other people.

If I win because I played well, the catharsis is amazing—but the second I lose, the stress hits all at once.

There are solo competitive types like Tekken or FIFA Online, and team-based ones like LoL and KartRider.

In solo matches, you only get mad at yourself,

but in team games, one huge downside is losing because of teammates—or getting blamed and dragged into team politics—and suddenly not wanting to play at all.

I’ll say which one I like more down below! Not that anyone was dying to know, but..

Mabinogi Mobile

It all starts with customizing your character.

For me, an RPG really has to have character customization.

You get way more attached to your character. She’s basically my daughter fr.

You party up with other players and clear dungeons,

follow the story and push through the main quests,

and sometimes just chill with the life-skill content too,

and after all that effort, it feels amazing when the drops finally go your way.

Honestly, when I was playing Mabinogi Mobile, I didn’t really have one clear goal.

I was playing because the character was cute, plain and simple.

Watching my power level go up was fun, sure, but just looking at my girl’s face was fun too.

Especially in Mabinogi, your appearance changes depending on age, right?

That part hit even more while I was growing the character.

The fact that it’s seasonal is kind of an open secret...

I also think one of the big charms of RPGs is how many different ways there are to play.

There’s combat, life content, social stuff—plenty to do.

I like that Mabinogi Mobile doesn’t have PVP.

League of Legends

When you think esports, what comes to mind? Obviously League of Legends.

It’s a 5v5 team battle game.

Most people already know that, so I’ll skip the full explanation.

Of course, that doesn’t mean sports games have no sense of growth.

There are tiers: Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Emerald, Diamond, Master, Grandmaster, Challenger.

The more matches you win, the more naturally you climb into the higher tiers.

Every game is intense, but once the matches start piling up, you can really feel yourself improving.

Personally, I thought sports games were more fun when I was younger.

But the older I get, the more I find growth-focused RPGs more enjoyable than sports games.

Going up against other people is tiring too, so it’s honestly more comfortable to just beat up some computer-controlled mobs instead.

More than anything, sports games can be exhausting because each match has a set time commitment, and once you’re in, it’s hard to just quit midway.

With RPGs, I like that I can log in whenever I want, say “okay, that’s enough for today,” and turn it off right away.

So these days, the one I keep reaching for is definitely the growth-focused RPG, Mabinogi Mobile.

Thank you.
