[Participating in the Nexon PEAK Post Challenge]
In this post, I want to talk about what personally draws me to the RPG and sports genres,
and which one I tend to prefer more.
🗡 RPG Genre

For a representative RPG example,
I’ll use Mapleland from MapleStory Worlds.
● The appeal of growing stronger through effort and time

In Mapleland, and really in most RPGs, one of the genre’s defining appeals is
the process of visiting different regions, defeating monsters, and clearing quests,
with the real core being the satisfaction of watching your character level up and gradually become stronger.
It almost brings to mind the idea that hardship comes before reward.
When I think back to the version of myself who could barely handle even a Lv. 8 Orange Mushroom,
and compare that to where I am now—at the point where I can even challenge Zakum, one of Mapleland’s standout boss monsters—
there’s a strange but very real sense of pride in thinking, ‘Wow, I really have gotten a lot stronger..!’

That feeling becomes even stronger when I look back on how I started out as a beginner with absolutely nothing, moving through places like Lith Harbor, Henesys, and Ant Tunnel,
spending my weaker Spearman days nervously hunting in parties and worrying that the spawns would fall behind other players,
and then compare that to now, when I’ve become a much stronger Spearman who can farm alone even in high-level hunting grounds without much trouble.
I think that contrast is what really makes the appeal hit home.
● The appeal of being able to experience and challenge more

I’d also say that the fun of trying new things and experiencing more of the game is another core appeal you can’t really overlook.
Exploring new regions, taking on new quests, and hunting unfamiliar monsters—
that rush of excitement that comes from discovering things you’ve never experienced before is hard to forget.

There was a time when I was so intimidated by the level 100 Crimson Balrog that I’d stay hidden inside the ship cabin in silence,
but now I can stand there confidently, draw my weapon, and face it head-on.

And on top of that, exploring and getting used to unfamiliar areas like New Leaf City,
while defeating monsters and clearing quests there, is definitely part of what makes the genre so appealing.
⚽ Sports Genre

For a representative sports title,
I’ll use FC 온라인 as the example.
● The fun of getting results through immediate gameplay

Unlike RPGs, where reaching a specific goal or piece of content usually takes a fair amount of time and effort,
sports games let you jump into a match as soon as you understand the basic controls,
and that ability to start competing with other players right away is one of the genre’s biggest strengths.
Being able to get a basic feel for the game immediately, even without a guide or manual,
also means the barrier to entry is relatively low.
(Of course, building your squad and the gap in skill are separate issues..)
It reminds me of going to a PC bang with friends and looking for a game we could play against each other right away,
then learning just the arrow keys plus pass, tackle, and shoot before jumping straight in and playing a few matches.
● The fun of building up different strategies and skills

Whether it’s planning out attacking and defensive tactics or learning useful individual skill moves,
I think the process of steadily refining those techniques is a big part of the fun too.
There’s also something satisfying about gradually building the skill to beat defenders more efficiently,
use passing the way you want to carve through the opponent’s half, or break through a defensive wall with dribbling and skill moves the other side can’t easily answer.
Personally, I prefer playing against high-difficulty AI,
and whether that means using space dribbling to get past tightly organized, strategically defending AI opponents despite their stats,
or practicing defensive play that cuts off passing lanes instead of just charging out recklessly,
the sense of accomplishment that comes from pulling off the kind of play I want is a huge part of the appeal for me.
My personal preference?
Both genres are clearly appealing in their own way, and both are fun to play,
but personally, I do prefer the RPG genre more.
I tend to like gameplay built around setting a major goal and slowly getting stronger over time,
and I enjoy experiencing varied, unfamiliar content so much
that I end up wanting to try everything the game has to offer.
I also get a lot of satisfaction from clearing difficult quests and collecting equipment,
so overall, I think RPGs naturally feel more appealing to me.!
