The Distinctive Mounts of Old MapleStory

Hello!

This is Nexon Picker PEAK Time.

In today’s MapleStory, you can use the Teleport World Map or the Maple Guide to get to almost any area you want in a single instant.

But in old Maple, there were all kinds of rides. From the familiar Orbis ship to Mu Lung’s crane, the variety was surprisingly wide, so I gathered some of the memorable ways we used to travel.

The Beginning of an Adventure

Southperry Ship

On Maple Island, where every adventurer begins the journey, there is a ship bound for Victoria Island.

Even though the cutscene sends you onward right away, you could still call it the very first ride you ever board. It is a charming little scene too—seeing even the Slime you were just fighting a moment earlier looking delighted by the new place.

It Goes Anywhere

Regular Taxi

Across Victoria Island, every town had a Regular Taxi. For a modest amount of mesos, it could whisk you off to any town in an instant.

But the black VIP Taxi was famous as the one taxi you should never take. It would forcibly drop you off at Ant Tunnel Park, where you generally needed to be at least level 20 to hunt.

Boarding a Real Airship

Orbis Ship

For adventurers who had graduated from Victoria Island, the first place they headed was Orbis. Back then, the only way to get there was by taking the ship from Ellinia Station.

Since Crimson Balrog would sometimes attack the ship to Orbis, staying inside the cabin was the safer choice. It was also common to pass the time there chatting while waiting for the trip to end.

There Was a Subway Too?

Kerning City Subway

The Kerning City Subway even had a ticket booth. You would press through the turnstile, and that led to the entrance for Kerning Square. The Kerning Square quest that helps Uu fulfill his dream is a well-known one too.

True to its name, the subway’s defining trait was its speed. There are handrails inside, but they sit far too high for MapleStory’s adorable little two-head-tall characters to reach, which is a funny detail in its own way.

A Cygnus Travel Method

Sky Ferry

For the Cygnus Knights, the first vessel they rode was a small airship that traveled from Ereve to Ellinia. It looked almost like a one-person craft.

It may have looked tiny, but the sight of it steadily rowing along was oddly memorable.

A True Mount

Monster Riding

Once you reached level 70, you could receive the Monster Riding quest from Kenta in Aquarium. Naturally, that meant working hard to fulfill Kenta’s requests.

After even buying the perfume for 20 million mesos, you could finally learn the skill that let you ride around on this adorable boar mount. At level 120, you could also pay 50 million mesos to change it into the splendid silver-maned version.

Beyond These as Well

A Variety of Other Rides

There was also Ariant’s Camel Taxi,

Aquarium’s Dolphin,

and even Mu Lung’s Crane. There were quite a few different rides like these.

So today, I took a look back at the many rides found in old Maple. Rather than flattening everything into one convenient system, the developers gave each region its own fitting NPCs, and that careful touch is part of what made these features stand out.
