World Biodiversity Day Special: Exploring Kibbo in Azur Promilia
네오필

Last May 22 was the International Day for Biological Diversity, a day set aside to reflect on the many forms of life on Earth.
As it happened, Azur Promilia’s domestic CBT ran just before that, from May 15 to 18, which made me think about “diverse life” in both the real world and the game.
Many players are first drawn in by the characters, but the other real stars of this world’s ecosystem seem to be the many different lifeforms known as Kibo.
With that in mind, and in the spirit of the International Day for Biological Diversity, this post briefly looks at the Kibo living throughout Azur Promilia.
Kibo

The Promilia Continent, the setting of Azur Promilia, is a fantasy world inhabited by many races, including humans, elves, beastfolk, and the Pami.
And there is one more part of that world.

That would be the hundreds of species of Kibo. They cut trees, sow seeds, and even serve as mounts, making them a major part of what gives this world a sense of life.
Officially, they are described not as simple pets or beasts, but as “indigenous inhabitants,” to the point that they are treated as beings on almost the same level as humans.
As players explore the continent, they encounter many kinds of Kibo, build bonds with them, and take on combat, adventure, and construction together. There are around 200 types of Kibo, although only some have been revealed so far.

Kibo are classified by combat style into types such as assault, toxic hunter, defense, cooperation, recovery, buffering, disruption, transformation, and territory. They are also categorized by daily life and exploration abilities into roles such as logging, fire-starting, irrigation, caretaking, and sowing. Some Kibo can also be ridden on land and water.
Overall, their designs stand out for blending plants, animals, and fairies, and their growth stages are divided into juvenile, growth, mature, and transcendent forms. As they grow, their appearance, habits, and roles change significantly, so for many players, “evolution” may feel like a more familiar term than simply “growth.”

For example, Sprout Fox is the juvenile form.

As it grows, it becomes Cotton-Tail Fox (growth stage), complete with small leaf-like wings.

After another stage of growth, it becomes Crown Fox (mature stage), with what were once ordinary horns developing into an impressive crown-like shape.

Alongside regular Kibo, there are also separate categories of variant Kibo and special Kibo.
Variant Kibo follow the familiar alternate-color concept, and their abilities are the same as those of standard Kibo.
Special Kibo, meanwhile, look almost the same in appearance, but only appear in special events, specific story moments, or certain regions and conditions. Collecting those as well is what makes for a truly complete collection.
How to Obtain Kibo

To obtain Kibo, players use a “Starlink Card”.
In the game’s setting, you and the Kibo acknowledge one another and form a contract through Starlink. For boss-level Kibo, however, Starlink is only possible after defeating them in battle. Starlink Cards come in several grades, and the higher the grade, the better the success rate.

Baechudak, a Kibo that also appeared as a mascot at Comic World
“Capture” may sound like the more familiar term, but Starlink is tied to the theme of “forming a bond with the stars,” rather than simple taming.
Instead of using a concept like capture, which can easily imply a top-down relationship, the game makes it clear that the bond is formed on equal footing.

Developer co-founder Lin Shuin, who also drew attention for her appearance
In that sense, it can also be seen as a design that carefully reflects current values. In developer interviews as well, the team emphasized “a world where characters and Kibo coexist harmoniously and build bonds together” as a core value of the game.
Closing Thoughts

There are also plenty of Kibo that seem likely to appeal to people with very particular tastes(?)
That wraps up this look at Azur Promilia’s Kibo and the Starlink system.
In other words, Kibo are more than simple pets. They are practically the world itself, and learning about each Kibo’s habits and place in the ecosystem looks set to be part of the appeal.
