The International Day for Biological Diversity is an international observance established by the United Nations (UN) to promote understanding and conservation of species diversity and raise global awareness of biodiversity loss and the climate crisis.

Hunting creatures is unavoidable in MapleStory, but with monsters respawning every day, their populations seem to be doing just fine. For this post, I’ve put together a little field guide to 3 types of creatures living and breathing in MapleStory!

1. Orange Mushroom

First up is MapleStory’s mascot, the Orange Mushroom. Pictured in order are Spore, Orange Mushroom, and Mushmom. If you play MapleStory regularly, you’ve probably seen or hunted them at least once. I’d say the Orange Mushroom might just be the game’s most iconic original monster.

Orange Mushrooms are so popular that they’ve inspired plenty of parody monsters, from the Mutant Orange Mushroom found in Henesys Ruins to Orange Mushrooms with unusual designs that appear only during events. This group definitely deserves a spot in a field guide +_+

1. Stump

They may look cute, but Axe Stumps have a sad backstory: a woodcutter left an iron axe embedded in them and walked away, and their resentment grew so strong that they became monsters. All the more reason to treat living things with care, wouldn’t you say?!

I’ve also added the rare species “Mutant Stump” and “Mutant Axe Stump” from Twilight Perion to the field guide. Of course, I included Stumpy too, who you could call the boss of the Stump family.

Stumpy became a monster by sucking up the last of the moisture in the devastated Perion—a reminder that we should always cherish living things and nature.

1. Seals

Now that we’ve covered the gloomy stuff, let’s finish with something cute: the adorable seals you can meet in Aquarium. A little extra trivia: despite looking like a seal(?), Alishar is not actually a seal.

They drop cute seal dolls and seal meat when defeated, but!! No hunting them today. Since we’re celebrating the International Day for Biological Diversity, let’s just admire them and think, “Oh, what cute creatures~!”
