Of all the things you can do with game characters, I love affinity quests that let you build a connection. You get a fun story to follow, and the rewards are pretty sweet, too. Hehe.

In MapleStory, Fame is an important way to gauge how trustworthy a player is. Think of it as Fame = how much other players like you.

In old-school MapleStory (메이플랜드, 메이플플래닛), some items even require a certain amount of Fame before you can equip them. In this post, I'll walk you through a simple, fun quest that'll boost your affinity (Fame). Let's go!

Kerning City JM Quest: Dark Swamp

To start today's quest, talk to the NPC “JM From tha Street” in Kerning City. The quest you want for raising your affinity is “[Kerning City] Dark Swamp”.

Once you accept, JM has a job for you: collect “20 Jr. Necki Skins” and “5 Witchgrass Leaves.” Gather everything, then drop the items off at the pharmacy above JM.

You can finish this quest in under 3 minutes, though it takes around 15 minutes in old-school MapleStory. Just remember that you need to get close to the Witchgrass and use a basic attack to make the leaves drop.

JM's Conspiracy Theory

Once that's done, accept “JM's Conspiracy Theory” to get into the affinity quest proper. Talk to JM, and he'll tell you rather ominously that “a strange creature has been appearing in the monster sewers lately.” He needs more information, so he asks you to visit a few specific NPCs.

Visit Mr. Pickall > Nella > Lakelis in that order to learn about the mysterious monster. Turns out Lakelis accidentally spilled a growth potion into the sewers, and that's how the monster came to be.

Of all things, a Ligator drank the growth potion and turned into a giant “Dyle.” I used to skip right past this dialogue, but now that I'm actually reading it, the story's pretty fun.

Feeling a bit deflated by the whole thing, JM asks you to defeat Dyle. I used to think he was a shady NPC doing Kerning City's dirty work, but he's really more of a kindhearted older guy looking out for his town.

Now just head back to the sewers and defeat 1 Dyle, and you're done. This probably would've been a bit tough in old-school MapleStory, but these days? One little tap does the job.

After defeating Dyle, head back to JM to collect 12 Fame. He wraps up the quest with a funny parting line: “Don't trust Lakelis.”

This quest is worth doing if you want to boost your character's Fame for smoother trading, or if you've got an item to equip that has a Fame requirement.
