This time, the keyword is Earth Day, and the focus is on noting in-game elements whose themes align with environmental protection.

MapleStory has countless regions and storylines, but this is not an especially easy theme to work into the narrative, so it is not something you come across very often. Even so, one of the theme dungeons, Riena Strait, contains several elements that strongly emphasize it, so I gathered the relevant points here.

Points related to the theme dungeon [Riena Strait]

1) Riena Strait is a long-running theme dungeon that was added in June 2013.

2) Of the four theme dungeons, this is the only one linked to the main story, which is why it is set as a recommended dungeon. Elements connected to Black Heaven, MapleStory’s first large-scale story blockbuster, also appear here.

3) Built around the glacier region of Rien, it depicts rising sea levels caused by Black Wings’ reckless development, along with the damage suffered by the characters who live there as a result.

Pollution produced by that development appears as monsters as well, and ancient fossils, which are likewise being discovered in the real world as glaciers melt, also appear as monsters.

4) Riena Strait is an area where the Teleport World Map cannot be used. You travel between each section by boat, but during quest progression, the destination is marked on the minimap as shown above, and an arrow also appears beside your character, so it is possible to move around without much confusion.

5) While progressing through the quests, the first monster-hunting quest in each section can be completed through the quest notifier, and the second monster-hunting quest can be accepted through the quest notifier.

6) If you press the Return to Town button anywhere other than the Glacier Observation Headquarters, you are sent to the Glacier Observation Headquarters rather than the observation post, so after defeating monsters, you need to walk if you want to head back to the observation post.

7) I found a note on namu.wiki saying that this theme dungeon was inspired by an overseas Earth Day event, so I looked into it, but for the moment I have not found any supporting material. The image above is from a different event held in 2022, and since Riena Strait was released much earlier, the sequence does not line up. If anyone happens to know more, I will reflect that here.

8) If I had to choose one theme dungeon to clear as quickly as possible while setting all other factors aside, this one would not rank very high. There are unskippable scenes along the way, and there is also the inconvenience of having to return to headquarters and travel back out again. The story itself, however, is fairly solid, and it includes a small but pleasantly warm twist.

9) Once all of the quests are completed, the three items shown above are awarded as item rewards.
