This time, the theme is Earth Day, with a focus on in-game elements that reflect the idea of protecting Earth's environment.

MapleStory has countless regions and stories, but environmental protection is not an easy theme to weave into a narrative, so examples are relatively rare. Riena Strait is one theme dungeon that explores it through several elements, and I have gathered those details here.

Details About the Theme Dungeon [Riena Strait]

1) Riena Strait is a long-standing theme dungeon, added in June 2013.

2) Of the 4 theme dungeons, it is the only one connected to the main story, which is why it is designated as a recommended dungeon. It includes elements tied to Black Heaven, MapleStory's first large-scale blockbuster storyline.

3) Set in the glacial region of Rien, it depicts rising sea levels caused by the Black Wings' unchecked development and the resulting harm to the people who live there.

Pollutants from this development appear as monsters, as do ancient fossils—a connection to the fossils reportedly uncovered in the real world as glaciers melt.

4) The Hyper Teleport Rock cannot be used in Riena Strait, so travel between areas is by boat. During quests, your destination is marked on the minimap, as shown above, and an arrow appears beside your character to help you find your way.

5) In each area, you can complete the first monster-hunting quest through the quest notifier and accept the second monster-hunting quest through it as well.

6) Using the return-to-town button anywhere other than the Glacier Observation HQ takes you to the Glacier Observation HQ rather than an observation station. If you need to reach an observation station after defeating monsters, you will have to walk there.

7) NamuWiki states that this theme dungeon was inspired by an overseas Earth Day event. I looked into the claim, but so far I have not found any supporting information. The image above shows a different event held in 2022, well after Riena Strait was released, so that event could not have been its inspiration. If anyone knows more, please let me know so I can update this section.

8) If speed is your only consideration when choosing a theme dungeon to clear, Riena Strait is a lower priority. Some sequences cannot be skipped, and having to travel back out after returning to headquarters adds to the inconvenience. The story itself is decent, with a modest but heartwarming twist.

9) Completing all the quests rewards you with the three items shown above.
