This time, the keyword is Facial Expression Master, so I’ll be covering the expression-related elements you can see in the game.

With that in mind, I’ve gathered the expression-related features MapleStory characters can use, focusing especially on the expression quests tied to your Charm level among the Traits.

Basic expressions MapleStory characters can use

To start with, characters are given a set of basic expressions by default. Even if you do not place them on a hotkey, typing chats such as ㅎㅎ,ㅋㅋ,ㅠㅠ,흑흑,버럭,우웩, ㄷㄷ, 덜덜,헉 will automatically trigger the matching expression on your character.

If another character is nearby while talking, the chat and expression appear together, which makes the emotion come across more clearly.

Additional usable expressions: Buy them from the Cash Shop - time-limited

On top of those, there are currently 15 additional expressions. Each one can be purchased from the Cash Shop for 100 Cash, and they can also be bought with Mileage.

However, expressions bought from the Cash Shop come with a 90-day duration, as shown above. 100 Cash for 90 days may not seem especially expensive on its own, but if you use these often, having to keep repurchasing them can definitely feel inconvenient.

Additional usable expressions: Complete Charm Trait quests - permanent

If that sounds annoying, there is a way to unlock these expressions permanently: complete the Charm level quests under Traits. As of the time of writing, the level 30 Charm requirement that used to be needed to unlock the Pocket Slot has been removed, so this is arguably the only remaining benefit of the Charm Trait.

There are 15 quests in total, starting at level 30 and continuing every 5 levels up to 100. Each time you clear one, you receive an expression reward with unlimited duration. They also come with the modifier “Charming.”

As you will see below, some of these quests can be cleared just by talking to an NPC, while others involve a slightly more tedious process. Aside from a few exceptions, though, they do not take much time, so if the rewards interest you, they are very manageable overall.

These quests also have a nice side appeal. Since each expression is obtained through a specific NPC, characters who normally do not get much attention end up showing a bit of their own story, which gives them a feel somewhat similar to the World Archive. If you enjoy that kind of content, they are worth checking out just for fun. Even if you do not plan to do them yourself, you can still see them below.

Summary of items to prepare for Charm Trait quests

Since you will need to move between several areas across Victoria Island, having the Premium Teleport World Map feature makes things much easier. The route is mostly town-based, so the Maple Guide can help as well, but some parts do require going out into field maps, so this is highly recommended.

The following items can be prepared in advance before starting the quest line. The farther down the list you go, the more bothersome they are to obtain. That is mainly because lower-level monsters tend to spawn in smaller numbers. Gathering them ahead of time will save you some trouble.

• 300 Oranges: General Store

• 1 Pair of Scissors: Buy from Dorae in Henesys Market

• 1 Diamond

• 425 Harp Tail Feathers

• 350 Curse Eye Tails

• 600 Stone Golem Rubble

The monsters you need to defeat during the quest line are as follows.

• 1 Crimson Balrog

• 450 Pirates and Dual Pirates

• 100 Ribbon Pigs and Blue Ribbon Pigs

You can accept these quests from Rina, located at the far right side of Henesys Market.

Charm Level 30: “Hmm” expression acquisition quest: Talk to Chief Stan

Charm Level 35: “Huff Huff” expression acquisition quest: Bring 350 Curse Eye Tails and talk to Hersha

• Hersha is in Ellinia

Charm Level 40: “Gasp Gasp” expression acquisition quest: Talk to Betty

• Betty is in Ellinia

Charm Level 45: “Queasy” expression acquisition quest: Talk to Tangyoon

• Tangyoon is in Nautilus

Charm Level 50: “Nod Off” expression acquisition quest: Defeat 100 Ribbon Pigs and Blue Ribbon Pigs each, then talk to Calico

• Calico is in a Nautilus field map, and you can defeat both types of pigs there

Charm Level 55: “Nyah” expression acquisition quest: Bring 300 Oranges and talk to Fairy Wing

• Fairy Wing is in Ellinia

Charm Level 60: “Tear Drop” expression acquisition quest: Bring 600 Stone Golem Rubble and talk to Camila

• Completing the quest lowers your Fame by 1

• Stone Golem Rubble is the most troublesome one, since the required amount is high and the monster count is not very dense. It takes about 20 minutes

Charm Level 65: “So Hot” expression acquisition quest: Obtain Nependeath's Honey and talk to Alphonse Green

• Nependeath's Honey is a quest item, so it will only drop after you accept the quest. It does not appear right away, but it will drop after defeating a few

Charm Level 70: “Kyao” expression acquisition quest: Buy a Pair of Scissors, then talk to Lince

• Lince is in the Orbis Hair Salon

Charm Level 75: “Wink” expression acquisition quest: Talk to Sirin

• Sirin is in Ariant Town

Charm Level 80: “Blaze” expression acquisition quest: Talk to Seona, then defeat Crimson Balrog

• Seona is at the Orbis Station platform for Ludibrium

• This quest lets you see Crimson Balrog, which no longer appears on the current sailing map. The ship is even docked at the station

Charm Level 85: “Kiss” expression acquisition quest: Bring a Diamond and talk to Plastic Roy

• Plastic Roy is in the Orbis Plastic Surgery

• The Diamond is not consumed

Charm Level 90: “Sparkle” expression acquisition quest: Defeat 450 Pirates and Dual Pirates each, then talk to Mini

• Mini is in the Ludibrium Hair Salon

• Pirates and Dual Pirates appear separately and in decent numbers, so this one does not take too long

Charm Level 95: “Starry Eyes” expression acquisition quest: Bring 425 Harp Tail Feathers and talk to Pam

• Pam's house is in the upper-left part of Leafre

• Harps are numerous, so collecting 425 goes fairly quickly

Charm Level 100: “Poof” expression acquisition quest: Talk to Elex, then return

• Elex is in Edelstein

• The line about doubting Elex's love is connected to Elex's story while in disguise

• If you choose a different expression instead of the love-struck one, your Charm stat decreases by 10

Appendix: Charm Trait medal quests

Alongside these expression quests, there are also medal quests that become available at certain Charm levels. Since this post is about the Charm Trait, I wanted to include those as well. The medals themselves have little to no stats, but depending on your outfit, their name and appearance can still be useful for fashion.

• Available at Charm Level 20 or higher: Talk to Nami Nyeo in the Henesys Tanning Shop

• Available at Charm Level 60 or higher: Talk to Retie in Leven Mine, then defeat 600 Big Spiders

• Available at Charm Level 100 or higher: Bring 1 each of Whale Helmet (Dodo), Knight Mask (Lilynouch), and Guardian Horn (Lyka)
