The theme this time is continuous play, exploring the experience of playing two or more games alongside one another.

The Maple Reward Points system encourages many players to play both MapleStory and MapleStory M, but rather than focusing on that aspect, I wanted to look at how their stories compare.

The value of comparing different stories within a shared setting

As I understand it, MapleStory M is now firmly taking its own direction with its systems and story, although some of its earlier regions are also said to have stories that differ from those in PC MapleStory. The setting is still the same, however, so familiarity with the original material gives you a chance to compare the two as you go.

I do not follow every storyline or know them all in detail, but I occasionally look into the parts that interest me, including Victoria Island, which I have been familiar with for a long time.

Ludibrium, the example I will focus on here, is also part of Victoria Island. Its additional dialogue and content build on the regions, characters, and stories we already know from PC MapleStory, making it worth reading through at least once if the subject interests you, so I have brought both versions together here.

Before we begin

1) Since updates to both PC MapleStory and MapleStory M revamped the leveling path before level 200, quests themselves have become less important, except when leveling alternate characters, earning achievements, or following the story.

2) Quest revamps in PC MapleStory have removed or simplified some longstanding quests, with the steps for taking a photo of the Roly-Poly Worker and collecting a lunchbox from Nemi removed entirely. The number of monsters you need to defeat, however, is higher than you might expect. The Eos Tower quests can be completed in sequence as you work your way down from the top.

3) Completing all the quests in PC MapleStory rewards you with a total of 11 Monster Summoning Sacks. The separate step of breaking a box and entering a map has also been removed.

4) Completing all the quests in PC MapleStory earns you the Ludibrium Sheriff medal.

5) In MapleStory M, all quests can be completed automatically, and these quests have relatively low level requirements, so anyone interested in the stories of other regions can use auto-questing to work through them. All dialogue from completed quests is then available in the quest menu, making it easy to revisit.

6) Considering just the Ludibrium quests, MapleStory M feels a little more detailed, offering more information and description about the king of Ludibrium and the region's background.
